THE ENTITY

Cold. So cold. So empty. I crave their ways. It is insatiable. No other organism has conjured my appetite like humans. I've consumed the mightiest of beasts, the slithering serpents beneath the earth, and the ones who soar above. Their deaths bring fullness. But humans bring something else. Humans are most peculiar; they have emotions and memories; they feel, and they love. So very fascinating. I want to feel this even if it's just for a moment. I want to feel it. I take the form of a nameless man, walking the busy streets in search of my next host. The sound of the city sends my senses into a frenzy. Every honk, every screech of a train, makes me turn my head. I turn toward them all. So much noise. So many hearts. So many souls. I'm so overwhelmed with the chaos of the city. I can shapeshift and inhabit the bodies of the souls I take, but it's merely a pale imitation of life. Yet I sense that within humans, there is a true consciousness I can mimic. The stolen do not go quietly. They reside in a wet, pulsing abyss behind my thoracic walls, an acoustic prison of my own design. I can hear them constantly; they scream, they cry, they claw against my walls. As I navigate the crowd, my gaze locks onto a male and a female anchored to one another in the middle of the pavement. PDA. A public display of shared consciousness. They hold each other as if trying to fuse their biological frames. It is a brilliant, blinding frequency of emotion. My species lives in the freezing abyss of darkness, but their intimacy burns like a localized sun. I'm envious but also deeply hungry. I want to taste that warmth, to absorb the euphoria of their love until it fills the hollow spaces beneath my carapace. My stolen eyes rill slightly into my skull at the mere thought of this harvest. They must not escape. They are the perfect prey. "Finally, they finish "and they start making their way to a parking garage, darkness my old friend, you've accompanied me through many hunts. I fall into step behind them, keeping a precise distance of eleven meters. The crowded sidewalk is a sea of grey wool coats and rushing bodies, but my gaze remains focused on the shifting heat signatures of their joined hands. The neon glare of the main avenue begins to fade as they make their way to their parked car, towards the darker, quieter veins of the city. The entrance to the parking garage swallows them whole. "I'm jealous." It is a brutalist cavern of stained concrete, smelling of old exhaust, stagnant puddles, and damp cold. I slip inside right behind them, my stolen leather shoes making no sound against the oil-slicked floor. Above us, the harsh buzz of fluorescent tubes flickers rhythmically, casting jittery shadows against the low ceiling. The distant police sirens are fading away, trapped outside by thick concrete walls. The silence is absolute, save for the echo of their footsteps. Click, thud. Click, thud. The sound bounces off the walls, a perfect acoustic map for my sensors. They walk deeper into the structure, ascending a concrete ramp to the deserted third level. There are no other humans here. Just rows of empty, metallic husks parked vehicles glinting under the pale light. "Did you hear that? The female suddenly asks. Her footsteps stop. The male stops too, his keys jingling in his hand. "Hear what?" "I don't know. Like...a clicking sound. Behind us." They turn around. I do not hide. I stand twenty meters away under a flickering light bulb, holding my stolen human form perfectly still. To them, I am just a lone man standing in the dark. But my internal anatomy is already shifting under the strain of the hunt. Beneath my coat, my thoracic plates slide against one another, making a dry, chitinous skirtch skirtch sound. "Hey friend. You lookin' for something?" the male calls out. His voice is loud, but the acoustic resonance reveals a sharp tremor. His adrenaline is spiking, flooding the cold garage with a scent so sweet it makes my secondary jaws twitch. This human form is fading away. I do not reply with human words. Instead, I let the disguise break. The skin on his face slowly splits down the center with a wet, ripping sound. The blood from his human shell oozes out and smacks against the floor of the garage. My jaw fractures into four separate, needle-lined mandibles that bloom outward like a corrupted flower. My spine snaps violently forward as four segmented, blade-like legs burst from my back, anchoring me to the concrete with a metallic scrape. I drop from my two legs to six, my body elongating into the terrifying, fluid silhouette of a predatory insect. From the center of my split face, the wet internal membrane vibrates. I open the vocal prison behind my chest. The dead souls trapped inside me scream out into the concrete chamber, projecting the male's own words back at him in a horrific, overlapping chorus of weeping voices: "Hey friend. You lookin' for something?" They both stare at me in terror, as they watch my transformation unfold. The male doesn't even have to scream. With the fluid, the explosive speed of a spring-loaded trap, I lunged forward across the oil-slicked concrete. My elongated, razor-sharp appendages whipped through the pale fluorescent light. Two wet, sickening punctures echoed through the garage as the chitinous blades drove straight through their chests, pinning them together in a horrific embrace. They gasped in unison, their bodies freezing as my biological needles locked in their flesh. They didn't bleed out onto the floor. Instead, a haunting, invisible force began to pull inward from the puncture wounds, dragging their very essence up through my hollow appendages and straight into my thoracic core. The decay was instantaneous. Before my eyes, the vibrant warmth of their youth evaporated. The rich color of their skin rapidly faded, turning translucent and ash grey. Their flesh withered, wrinkling and deteriorating into a dry, papery husk as I drank their vitality whole. The euphoria of their love, their shared memories, and their intense emotional bond flooded my system like liquid fire. My internal carapace vibrated with the sudden, overwhelming rush of their consciousness being ripped from their skulls. Beneath my chest plates, two new voices joined the choir. They didn't scream yet. They just wept, their fresh grief molding perfectly into the architecture of my mind. I retracted my appendages with a wet hiss. The two decayed, hollowed forms collapsed onto the concrete floor like brittle autumn leaves, utterly hollowed out. I stood over them, my insectoid body pulsing with their stolen warmth, full yet perpetually starving for the next harvest. A faint, raspy voice whispers, "Excellent." The entity is pleased. The scent of the salt water grows stronger with every passing mile. I can feel the town drawing closer now, nestled against the jagged, frozen coast like a dying animal waiting to be put down. The Entity pulses at the base of my skull, a rhythmic, commanding heartbeat guiding me straight toward my target. Soon, the fog will roll over the docks. Soon, the girl will look out her window into the dark. She thinks she is mourning her father, but she has no idea that a far greater nightmare has just arrived at her doorstep.

The hunt begins again.
