Love Transcends Time

Weekly Contest #370

LOVE TRANSCENDS TIME Born an introvert, I turned to reading to avoid speaking or socializing. My favorite genres are romance and mysteries. My least favorites are Westerns and Science Fiction, so when the library staff chose a book called Love Transcends Time, by Robert Lore, for our monthly book club reading, I was skeptical. Lately I’ve been working on getting out of my comfort zone, so I decided to read the book anyway. Because of my initial hesitation, I was the last member to pick the book up at the library, and it showed. The book wa...

THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR EXISTENCE

Weekly Contest #368

Although this story is fictional, it may offend people who are religious/Christian. Some parts of the story debunk the bible and its teachings. I didn't write it to offend, but to entertain. The Truth About Your Existence The story I am about to tell you is the absolute truth about the existence of humankind. I refuse to change any names or locations to protect anybody, because I don’t have to. You had all the protection you needed before you came into this world. For nine months, you were surrounded by a woman’s placenta, which acts as a...

LOVE BEHIND BETRAYAL

Weekly Contest #367

LOVE BEHIND BETRAYAL I love my sister, but the feelings I had for her husband were much stronger. I confessed my love to him. There is no going back now. I didn’t want to feel this way, but every time Jeffrey and I were in the same room, I couldn’t take my eyes off him. What woman could blame me? His deep, sultry brown eyes and perfectly plump, kissable lips only amplified his strong athletic quarterback-built body, making him so irresistibly sexy. But the essence of his physicality was not the only thing that drew me to him. It was the ge...

NO MORE BLUE SKIES

Warning: There are some curse words, and the subject of Athesism may offend some. This is the first chapter to a series I decided to write because of this prompt. This story will continue so there is no ending in this reading. NO MORE BLUE SKIES Paula Brooks stared at the dimming blue skies as she watched the ominous clouds slowly take away the once beautiful scenery. She knew a great deal of rain was about to be dispensed on her. Her fellow church folks always say that pouring rain means God was crying. She didn’t know about God’s emotiona...

Bodega Cat

Weekly Contest #327

It was a muggy Saturday night on August 12, 2023, when an unexpected incident forced me to use a gift that God had given me, and I hid from the world! I was in the back room of a Bodega eating my last meal for the night, which was located on 161st Street in the Bronx, New York, between Yankee Stadium and the Bronx Courthouses. Just before I was about to take my last bite of food, I heard some commotion coming from the front of the store. My best friend, and the store owner, Mario, had just closed the shop for the night. I figured that the ...

Bella's Determination-A Ghostly Encounter

Weekly Contest #326

PLANET EARTH-TWO DAYS BEFORE HALLOWEEN ROBERT HAYES It seems like she’s been stalking me for a couple of weeks now, following me around the Macy’s department store, where I work. I am responsible for setting up Halloween displays for the holiday season.I am usually not the nervous type, but lately I’ve been jittery and I think other people have noticed it too. Even though I never met this woman, something about her seemed familiar. Her spirit. Her energy. It just rubs me the wrong way. “I know who you are,” she said, as she finally spok...

Strange Surroundings

STRANGE SURROUNDINGS “Did you hear that noise last night?” said eighty-three-year-old Florence Sachs as she hobbled on her cane. She spoke to her next-door neighbor Clara Feeley at 11:00 a.m. on a Sunday in a small suburban community. “I think you had too many shots of whiskey last night. Of course, I heard the noise. It was so loud, got me nervous, I didn’t go back to sleep until 3:00 a.m. this morning,” said eighty-four-year-old Clara. “To top everything off, I kept getting up every couple of hours to use the bathroom. The noise only con...

Lunch Time

Weekly Contest #165

Lunch Time Every Saturday afternoon for the last fifteen years, they have been meeting for lunch once a month. That’s a lot of lunches, but for best friends that met in college and hit it off instantaneously, it was not enough. Today’s lunch on October 1, 2022, would be different because Jane had a dark secret to share with her best friend Sara. This secret had the potential to end badly for Sara and destroy their friendship forever. “Hey, Girly, Girly,” said Jane, rushing over to Sara the moment Sara stepped off the 96th street crosstown bu...

Picture Perfect

Weekly Contest #144

PICTURE PERFECT My earliest memory of my irrational fear of not wanting my picture taken was when I was in the 1st grade. One autumn day, my teacher, Mrs. Goosby announced that a class picture would be taken the following month. She insisted all the children wear their best outfits and groom properly. After her announcement, terror had struck me as the nerves in my body pulsed expeditiously. My palms started to sweat. I was beyond terrified; I was mortified. It wasn’t because my mother and I were impecunious and I was afraid I wouldn’t ...

Love Is All There Is-Tailor-Made

Weekly Contest #142

“Do you have a book called ‘Love Is All There Is-Tailor Made’ by Sheila Davis?” A twenty-three-year-old Marsha Hunter anxiously asked the 41-year-old librarian, Julia Russell. Julia looked over her black-rim glasses and then froze for a minute as she sat behind her desk at The New York City Public Library. Something about the young mixed-raced-looking woman seemed so familiar to her. It wasn’t just her appearance but her mannerisms and the way she spoke. It was eerie. After a minute Julia shook off the feeling and proceeded to engage with th...

Only In My Dreams

Weekly Contest #138

Only In My Dreams "I have been up for three days now; I am exhausted. I spent endless nights drinking black coffee, manically flipping cable channels like I was off my meds, all in an effort to stay awake. I had to stay awake, I couldn’t fall asleep or I would die!" My dilemma began one summer evening about 7:00 p.m. After watching a horror movie on an odd cable channel, my life was changed forever. The seven hours of sleep I managed to get every night, has all but vanished from my life. I remember being exhausted that night, and wanted to...
