“Hey, what are you doing? Point the camera up.”
The girl sighs.
She lifts the camera.
“Cameron, this is a bad idea.”
Cameron sits at one end of the dining table.
She frowns.
“You already agreed to this.”
The girl at the other end of the table sets the phone down on the table.
“I don’t know, Cam. I’m having second thoughts.”
Cameron’s brow furrows.
“If you don’t help me, then I’m just going to do it myself.”
The girl swallows. She looks down at the phone. Then she sighs and picks it up.
“Don’t blame me when this goes wrong.”
Cameron adjusts her hair. It looks wild, like she hasn’t slept in days.
“Okay, are you ready?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay. Start recording.”
The girl presses a button on the phone.
Cameron blinks.
“Is it recording?”
The other girl nods.
Cameron pulls herself together.
She takes a breath.
“If you are watching this video, then I am dead. This video goes out to you boys who thought it would be funny to tell Jake to pretend to go out with me. That shit isn’t funny. I hope you watch this video. And I hope you rot in hell.”
Cameron pauses.
“I’m going to kill myself once this recording is done. And I’m going to have my sister post it so that everyone hears my side of the story.”
Cameron taps her hand on the table.
“So yeah, that’s pretty much it. I hope you all have great fucking lives. See you.”
Cameron nods to her sister. She stops the recording.
“Did you get it?”
“Yeah.”
“Good.”
Cameron leans back into her chair.
Her sister bites her lip.
“What do you think this video is going to do?”
Cameron looks at her.
“I don’t know. I just hope those bastards get treated like shit the rest of their pathetic lives.”
Her sister looks away.
Cameron looks at her.
“You already know everything they did. They deserve this.”
Her sister swallows. She picks up the phone again.
“You’re not actually going to do it, right?”
Cameron flinches.
“Of course not. I’m just going to skip school for the next few days.”
Her sister relaxes slightly.
“Now let me see your phone. I’m going to post it.”
Her sister freezes.
She balls her fist.
“You know, it’s not too late to stop. We don’t have to post it.”
Cameron walks over to her.
“What? Then we would have done all of this for nothing.”
Her sister grabs the phone and backs away from the table.
“We shouldn’t be doing this. It isn’t right.”
Cameron holds out her hand.
“Give the phone to me. It’s just a video. Who cares? Besides, it’s not like I’m actually going to do it.”
The sister turns to run.
Cameron reaches out and grabs her wrist.
The phone slips from her hand.
Cameron reaches down and snatches it from the ground.
“Too slow.”
“Cameron, stop. Don’t do this.”
Cameron scrolls through the phone for a second.
“It’s done. No point worrying about it now.”
Her sister exhales.
“I hope you know what you’re doing.”
Cameron looks down at the phone again. The post receives a like.
Then another.
Then a repost.
Cameron watches as the numbers slowly start to rise.
“Hey, take a look at this.”
Cameron sits down at the table. Her sister looks over her shoulder.
“Holy shit. It’s already got a thousand likes.”
She scrolls down.
“Look, there’s some comments as well.”
“I always knew that Jake was a douchebag.”
“How could they do something like that?”
“Did Cameron really kill herself?”
She pauses after reading the last one.
Her sister takes a step back.
“Sarah, look at this. The comments just keep coming in.”
Sarah turns and walks back into her room. She closes the door.
Cameron doesn’t even notice. She’s too busy staring at the phone screen.
—
Cameron lays in her bed, staring at the phone. She scrolls through, reading comment after comment.
Her smile grows larger.
Then she sees one that catches her attention.
“I heard Jake was forced to be her boyfriend.”
Then another.
“Didn’t his parents just get divorced?”
Cameron blinks. Her smile fades slightly.
She turns the phone off and sets it on her bed stand.
She closes her eyes and falls asleep.
Cameron wakes up to a loud knock on the door.
A muffled voice comes from the other side.
“Hello? Is anyone in there?”
The knocking comes again, louder this time.
“Open the door. This is the police.”
Cameron’s eyes shoot open. She shoots out of her bed.
“The police?”
She looks at the door to her bedroom.
Suddenly she hears the sound of the front door opening.
Cameron puts her ear up to her door to listen.
“Hello?”
“Hi, is your sister home?”
There is a pause.
“No, I don’t think so. Why?”
There is a sigh from the policeman.
“Your sister posted a video last night saying that she was going to kill herself.”
Another pause.
“Did you know anything about it?”
“No, I didn’t. Why would she post something like that?”
“I don’t know. But I need to find her. Where are your parents at?”
“They don’t live here.”
“I see.”
The voices get more muffled.
Cameron adjusts his position on the door, leaning into it harder.
“If she’s not here, then I’ll ask the neighbors if they saw her leave last night.”
Cameron slowly rises to her feet.
“Thank you for your help.”
She hears footsteps leaving.
She takes a step away from the door. Her foot gets caught in some dirty clothes that she left on the ground.
She slips. The world turns upside down.
Her body hits the floor with a crash.
“What was that?”
The policeman’s voice comes through the door.
Cameron freezes. She covers her mouth.
“Is there someone in the house?”
Cameron holds her breath.
Her heart starts beating loudly.
“I’m going to check it out.”
Cameron closes her eyes.
“Wait! That’s probably just our cat.”
No voices come for a moment.
“A cat?”
“Yeah, he can be a klutz sometimes.”
The silence is longer this time.
Longer than it’s ever been.
Cameron doesn’t open her eyes.
“If you say so. Here’s my personal number. If Cameron tries to contact you in any way, please let me know.”
“Okay, I will.”
Cameron hears footsteps.
Then the sound of a door closing.
She exhales loudly, trying to catch her breath.
She lays on her back in the middle of her room.
Suddenly her door opens.
Her sister walks in.
“We can’t keep that video up. This is serious.”
She is pacing in front of the door.
“I told you that video wasn’t a good idea. You should have listened to me.”
Cameron slowly sat up.
She pursed her lips.
Her sister spotted her phone on the bed stand. She started walking towards it.
“I’m deleting the video.”
Cameron scrambles to her feet and blocks her path, putting her arms out.
“You can’t take it down! It's too late now, anyways. People have seen the video already.”
Sarah pushed her way past her sister.
“It’s never too late. Look, Cameron, a policeman came to our door. If I didn’t cover for you, then you could have been arrested.”
Cameron pushes against her sister.
“Yeah, but I didn't. I'm fine, okay. Look at me.”
“Just let me see your phone!”
Sarah overpowers her sister and reaches the bed stand. She grabs the phone and types in the password.
Cameron pulls at Sarah’s arm.
“Sarah, give me the phone.”
Sarah scrolls through the phone for a second while holding off her sister.
Suddenly she freezes. Her face turns pale.
Cameron grabs the phone out of her hand.
“Finally. I told you to—”
Cameron stops. She reads the phone screen.
“What? That’s not…”
The phone falls from her hand.
She falls down and crawls away from it.
Sarah is standing motionless next to her.
Cameron gulps.
“Why did… I didn’t mean to—”
Her breath catches in her throat.
She looks back at the phone screen.
It reads: “Jake Stateman commits suicide after receiving brutal suicide note.”
A video starts to play.
Neither one of the girls move.
“Hey, guys.”
Jake’s voice comes through the phone.
The color is completely drained from both of their faces.
“I don’t really know why I’m making this video, but I saw Cameron’s video… I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to… I just— I didn’t know that it was going to end up like this. I guess everyone hates me now. Maybe I deserve it.”
There is a pause in the video.
“See you.”
The video ends.
Sarah takes a shaky breath. She takes another look at the phone screen then turns away and closes her eyes.
The silence is deafening.
It continues on for a few more moments.
Cameron finally breaks it.
“Jake is really…”
Tears start filling her eyes.
She pulls her legs into her body.
“Dammit.”
Sarah slowly turns and looks at her.
She clenched her fist.
“This is your fault.”
Cameron stops crying.
“If you didn’t have the bright idea to make this video, then none of this would have happened.”
Cameron looks up at her.
She bites her lip.
“Yeah, well you helped make it. If anything, you’re just as much at fault as I am.”
Sarah blinks.
“My fault? I tried to stop you from making it! It was your fault! All your fault! If you didn’t want some stupid revenge suicide thing, then…”
Cameron rises to her feet.
“Keep saying that all you want, but it doesn’t change the fact that you were in on it too! Don’t blame me! You are a murderer too!”
Sarah stares at her. She takes a step forward.
Her foot lands on the phone.
She looks down at it.
A thought starts to form in her head.
“You’re the one on video, though. Who do you think people are going to believe? Let me tell you something, people actually like me at school. When I tell them what you did, what do you think they’re going to say?”
Cameron’s eyes widen. She doesn’t respond for a second.
She finally speaks in a small voice.
“You wouldn’t do that.”
Sarah is screaming now.
“And why wouldn’t I? I’m the only one! I know what you did! You’re a murderer!”
Cameron yells. She charges her sister.
Sarah freezes. She turns to run, but her foot gets caught in the dirty clothes under her.
Sarah topples to the ground as Cameron tackles her.
Her head hit the metal edge of the bedpost.
It cracks open.
Cameron pants as she lays on top of her.
“What now? Still going to tell everyone?”
She slowly picks herself up.
“Well?”
Cameron looks at Sarah’s head. It was completely bashed in. Blood poured from the area where her head collided with the bedpost.
“Sarah?”
Sarah didn’t respond.
The blood soaked into the dirty clothes around her.
“Sarah, why aren’t you answering?”
Cameron stood up. She stares at the blood. Life was completely drained from Sarah’s eyes.
Cameron shakes her head and backs away.
“It’s not my fault."
"It’s not my fault."
"It’s not my fault."
"It’s not my fault.”
"It's not my fault!"
The phone buzzes.
Notifications about Jake’s death flood the screen.
Cameron wraps her arms around her body. She bites her lip. Blood falls from the area that she bit.
Tears fill Cameron’s eyes.
“This isn’t what I wanted. This isn't right.”
Cameron’s breathing picks up. She runs into the kitchen.
She falls into the counters as she passes by them. She cries out and collapses onto the table.
Her tears soak the hard wood.
She doesn’t move for a moment.
Her chest rises and falls.
She slowly lifts her head.
“It’s my fault. Isn’t it?”
She blinks as the realization takes over her body. She slowly starts to chuckle.
The laughter spreads, growing louder and more painful by the moment.
Cameron sits laughing at the table. She scans her surroundings. Her eyes lock onto an object.
Cameron gets up and walks over, grabbing the object and turning it over in her hands.
She sits back down at the table. She’s in the same spot she was in when she first recorded the video.
She holds the object in front of her. It’s a knife.
Cameron takes a breath.
“See you.”
She plunges it into her throat.
