Rainbow Space Shuttle

Bedtime Friendship Funny

Written in response to: "Your character makes a life-changing decision. What happens next?" as part of Not What It Seems.

Okay. This is one life changing decision right here. Do I want the “rocket clusters” or the “rainbow space shuttle” gummies? Who am I kidding? “Rainbow space shuttle” is way more my speed.

I grab the bag, nod, and as I step away another bag falls to the ground. “Looks like two bags of candy for me!” I snicker. I pick it up and hear a muttering of something. I ignore it, checking out with a drink and a pack of smokes.

I head back to my dorm. I ride my bike, the wind blowing through my hair and leaves falling on the ground. It’s early fall. I wave to my peers, Daniel gives me a free monster, and I smoke while biking. I listen to some music in my headphones. I have an average, normal life.

Then, my life changed when I opened my “Rainbow Space Shuttle” gummies. Life got a lot more interesting that day.

“How dare you!” The squeakiest voice I have ever heard shouts at me. I hear a boing noise, and then a tiny alien like creature lands onto my shoulder. It’s silver with black eyes. Classic alien. It's miniature.

”Hey man, what’s up?” I chuckle. Because no way I’m actually seeing this. My cigarette had to of gotten laced with some ish. “I am a highly respected being on my planet I’ll tell you! Dropping me was not cool!” The voice is so squeaky I’m trying my best not to laugh at him.

“I’m sure you’re very respected, but how can I help?” “Follow the leader!” “What?” “Leader!” He springs from my shoulder and lands by the bag of rocket shaped candy. He points to the manufacturer code. “123-420-8400”

Okay, I’m being punked. Like, I’m going insane. There’s no way a little squeaky alien wants me to call the number to the manufacturer. I have to do research before making another life altering decision like this. I hate phone calls. Is this a customer complaint? I guess it is…

I open my laptop and go through article after article about aliens. Nothing I found depicted a tiny little squeaky alien. Nothing I found discussed an alien that fiddles around your room. He's looking at everything he could find! I’m trying to stop him from hurting himself. Why am I even bothering? Because these articles talk about violent aliens and I’m paranoid. Last thing I need is this guy to crawl in my ear and infect my mind or something.

“I'll call if it'll get you out of here quicker. I gotta do my homework…” I mutter. I grab my phone and call the number. Sherri, the sweet lady on the phone, informs me that aliens have snuck into their factory all week. Most of the aliens believe the rockets in "Rainbow Rocket Shuttles" are their actual shuttles…

This call took me 57 minutes.

“Press four if you’ve an anomaly within your bag” had a fifty minute wait… then a simple seven minute call with Ms. Sherri.

She explained to me that there’s this leader, Clorg. He built an actual shuttle for them to return back to space with. Wherever their planet is, he won’t leave without his entire fleet. They’ve created a system to find everyone, but rely on the good samaritans of the world to actually call them. Plus, these aliens are "obnoxious" to anyone who doesn't help. Lovely...

“Place the tiny alien in a shipping box. You'll send him to the location we will email you. Could we have your email?” I sigh. “Is it a subscription?” I ask, the eye roll soaking my voice. "No. No subscription. Only a favor. We would appreciate discretion in this matter, please. Press seven if you agree. Press eight if you don’t. Good bye.” Click

I sigh, look at the alien, and press seven. He hasn’t seemed to do anything wrong. “What did the leader say!?” It squeaks. “Remind me, what’s your name?” “I don’t have one!” It exclaims. “I am General Admiral of Cleaning! That is name enough!”

“That position is so important you have to return home for that, dude?” I'm curious. “Yessir! I am an integral part of the function of Rainbow Shuttle 20567!” he shouts. “Okay, but you know these here are candy?” “What is this ‘can-dee’” it asks. “This is not a shuttle home?” The alien is holding one in his hand. “No.” I frown. I grab one and hand it to the line. “Here, try it.”

It takes a bite. I’m watching, and it grows about an inch. “This is delightful!” He grins. “I'm taller…” his voice deepens a bit. Easier to take serious. “I'm energized…” His eyes are now glowing cyan, swirling. He’s a bit wobbly. “What is this stufffff” he hisses.

“Moreeee” his teeth are sharp, fang like, and thirsting for sugar. “More more more!” It rummages through the bag and eats another shuttle. And another. And another and another and another! Until it’s finished. He's now wearing the bag like a shirt.

”I must return and share of this cand-e to the other Aliens!” He’s running in a circle and jumping every few seconds. He’s pumping his fist. He’s giggling. He’s estatic… I gotra help, right?

“I can do that. That’s simple. I’ll send you back with some. But you gotta hide. The candy people wanted discretion. I don’t want to get sued or some ish for not keeping this secret.” I place the alien in my shirt pocket.

I scavenge around my dorm for a box and place it in my backpack. We head to the gas station together. I buy around $57 worth of candy and saunter home.

I place candy in the box along with some water, soda, and other things the aliens may not have. Like card games. It’s kinda cool I get to be part of this.

”Thankssss for your assistance” it squeaks. “Alien 419 will never forget you. Nor the Rainbow Shuttle Candy!” He springs into the box.

I find the address the candy company sent to me and write it down on the box with a return label. I wonder if the aliens will write back. I’ll have some alien friends now. It’s kinda exhilarating that I not only met one - but affected his life a bit with things from Earth.

I bike to the post office and send my little buddy on his way. It’s about sunset when I finally leave. The sky is like a sherbet dream, and the leaves are falling gently in the wind tonight.

I place my headset on and bike to the gym. When I arrive, I grab my backpack and change. I find something at the bottom of my bag. The alien left a bag of candy and a note.

“Thank you human 2457890.2! I appreciate you adjusting my colonies taste. I shall visit you in the future. I have adjusted these gummies for focus and energy. When I rummaged around your room, you appeared a student of some kind. Have a growth oriented life. Signed, Alien 419”

I’m curious on how he adjusted them, but an alien seems more prone to helping when you help them. I’m so glad that I made the choice of Rainbow Space Shuttle Candy. Who knows what would have happened if I got Rocket Clusters
