The full moon

Drama High School Suspense

Written in response to: "Include the line “There’s no one there,” “I know what I saw,” or “I never left” in your story." as part of Ghost Stories.

The world felt lighter as days got colder, fall was always the best time of the year for her.

September came and went with a blur of things, she never got caught on full moons. She knew what to do when it came to those.

October was the real issue here.

Her heels clicked as she walked down the hallway, the school was big, she only knew her route by heart. The high school was made for the entire town. Some place where everyone didn’t know everyone. Well, she had to know everyone, unfortunately.

“Get to class freshmen.” She huffed her hands behind her back, still walking.

“Why should we?”

“We don’t listen to you!” two of them yelled back.

She sighed as she walked off, she didn’t care that much if they ruined their attendance. Her homeroom teachers door was open, the clicking noise of it shutting behind her. She put her stuff down onto her desk as Mrs Lyia continued to talk about whatever was going on that week.

The seniors sat quietly for once in their lives as the teacher pulled up the presentation she had. The bright light flashed and her eyes dilated to slits instead of normal circles. She needed to leave.

She stood up before calmly walking to the teacher and asking to use the restroom.

“You came in 5 minutes late and now you need the bathroom?”

“In my defense I had to do something in the hallway!”

“Fine. go.” She handed me a little piece of plastic covered paper saying “Bathroom Pass” in bold letters. I walked out, the hall lights starting up to that bright glow they usually do.

Her head spun as she walked lightly, a drastic change in light without warning could lead to a disaster she didn’t want yet.

The door to the girls restroom slammed shut behind her as she sat on the floor, there was a specific spot where the sink and wall hid her from all eyes, and the annoying little freshmen, who liked spying on her.

“And finally you’re back.” Mrs Lyia sighed in annoyance.

“Yeah, I had to use the restroom.”

“Just sit down.”

She moved to her seat sitting down, the teacher rambled on and on for about five more minutes before something smacked her desk. A rock… or a pencil? No matter, it had landed on her desk and she was not too thrilled about it.

She glared over at the kid next to her, knowing he had to have done it.

“Bradley, did you throw this on my desk?”

“Nooo.”

“You suck at lying dude.”

Bradley sighed as he snatched the pencil that she had put in her hand-to-hand back to him. Her focus went back onto board and whatever the teacher rambling on about… fractions?

She sighed again, boredom slowly washing over them.

October flew by. Seconds into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into days, and so on and so forth.

The night before Halloween had her wide-eyed as she started at the moon. an almost full moon. Meaning tomorrow was a full moon. She pulled out her phone quickly typing into the search bar.

Of course a kid had to run up to her mid panic.

“Are you ok? You seem stressed”

“I’m fine, thank you.”

“Here! Take my dinosaur.”

The kid ended up handing her a small dinosaur that squished when she touched it. The little boy nodded and ran back into the now dimly lit streets of the neighborhood.

The rest of the night was stressful. there was no way she would be able to get out in time. Her eyes searched everything frantically, before her head dinged reminding her of the small cabin a few miles out.

Nobody would find her.

…

The night of Halloween, a night some people loved, and some people hated. She particularly didn’t like this Halloween night.

The day flew by. She hated that.

Murmurs in the hallways spread like wildfire with parties, and drinking games. The normal things high schoolers did in their free time.

She snuck out getting home in time. Her mom welcomed her as she put her bag down.

“Welcome home sunny, how’s my little ray of sunshine doing.”

“It was ok, today went by fast though. Is it ok if I went out and celebrated Halloween tonight?”

“Well of course, just none of that funny business ya hear me.” She pointed the wooden spoon she was holding at me.

“Yes ma’am.” She said giving her a hug before leaving.

“Also dear, don’t be too wild tonight. It is a full moon.”

Willow nodded her head turning back to the door. It shut with a click. She went down to the local supermarket picking up something small, she knew how long she had.

Once she finally got to the dirt trail that led to the cabin, she knew it sat there and used it every so often.

Not everyone knew about it.

Her legs hit the dirt with a thump. Light dust particles went up into the air, the trail was semi long, not long enough to kill her legs but enough to make her tired.

The wood groaned as she moved to the stairs. The sun had started its downfall towards the ground.

She didn’t have a lot of time.

The wooden door open as she moved in, dropping her stuff down and walking to the field.

“I swear if one of those little freshmen follows me I will actually lose my s…” Her voice cut off as she heard a high pitched noise hit her ears as the last droplet of sun vanished from the sky.

The transformation was quick. One second she was well her, the next she was a werewolf. She howled as she was truly formed before she ducked away.

Her ears lifted as she heard voices, listening to them like a parent spying on their kids.

“There’s no one here!”

“I know what saw dude.”

“You’re insane!”

The two voices bickered back in fourth as she backed up farther. Someone had heard her.

Her legs moved quickly the night had fell but maybe she could act fake, or like a statue.

“Yo bro, what’s that in the field?” The one kid asked as they were already walking forward. The two stalked forward, her leg cramping as she stood.

Look like a statue, look like a statue. She repeated in her head as she looked down at the now standing in front of her juniors.

“This has not been here before man.” The shorter one said. They were far enough to where if she jumped they would be safe, but close enough to where they could see each other.

“Probably some freak put it in here.” The other replied.

These two idiots rambled on and on about who knows what. They only stopped when the wind howled. Or what they thought was the wind. The night got colder and eventually they started leaving.

Her instincts cut in and she followed them. Right back to the cabin. The two snickered as they reached for something in there pocket.

She didn’t stay to watch.

…

“Local News Report: Old cabin burnt to the ground after tragic events.” The news crackled over the radio.

She picked up her water bottle taking a drink of water.

“Such a sad event.”

Oooooh, this was so good!
I've got a few notes & some remarks!
You switched from 1st to 3rd person in the beginning there, but that's just something that a quick run-through could patch up :). You also ended it really quickly, and I low-key really wanted more!! But you can definitely write for more than 1,000 words, Liz, lol. It didn't get into super cringe territory so you're good there!!
Your dialogue was really good, and I could see some parallels there from our school.. lol. And, OMG, that ending??? Genuinely so good! You've definitely come such a long way from last year and even last week, and this was such a good story!
Keep going, Liz!!
PS- Bo + Hazel?
