NO MORE CALIFORNIA

Coming of Age Contemporary Drama Fiction Funny

This story contains themes or mentions of physical violence, gore, or abuse.

Written in response to: "Write a story about a decision that can't be undone." as part of The Point of No Return.

Why leave this place, California, no one is supposed to leave .

The weather is so nice all year long-Where I was going it snowed in winter and the Italian ski team was a big deal.

No, it wasn’t the weather.

I would become a professor’s wife.

Professors often go to conferences sometimes in exotic places, which would be fun. I love travel, and the professor’s wives often get a special tour.

My bout of multiple sclerosis put an end to this however.

I did get to participate in an Apple Computer event in Paris. Fun, but quite tiring. That is the problem with MS, as it is known. It doesn't kill you, but it makes one move more slowly.

This made life near thc Mediteranean Sea seem better. Here it is quite possible to swim the sea without fighting waves or the current, as one must do in the Peacific Ocean. If one is athletic enough one goes body surfing that must be fun because one lets the wave push one ashore. However, one must get the wave as it is building, pretty far out. Fighting the water takes much muscle that I do not have.

My sister did do some body surfing though, it is possible..

My husband has put up with my difficulties and we are still waiting for ''the cure'

Having grown up in California I didn’t know much about how to behave in the snow, I put on another jacket, Then there is the sled. If one is athletic enough one may ski. My husband had grown up skiing.

He thought it very easy. But between MS and my non-athleticism, I didn't become an avid skier.

I tried, but I only become a member of the wannabe ski team.

When I was 30 minutes from my departure to live in Italy, I did shed a few tears

I was leaving my favorite garden, Descano, a forest of camellia, with a Japanese Tea House, where I often took my professor husband to grade papers. I would miss some gardening that was only possible

There was a moment when my professor husband may have gone to work at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, but no, it was not fated for me. No chance of becoming a little old lady from Pasadena, as the song goes.

My husband did tell me I would have to move to Italy if I wanted to stay with him since he had to return for family reasons.

This indicated his strong commitment to family, which seemed to lessen the possibility of divorce, that had been able to ruin, maybe cancel, my childhood.

My mother had been captured by a Mormon in high school, who refused abortion, but was prone to fooling around. He would have another child whose mother asked that the child go to college,

But the first woman he had a child with was left alone, pregnant, with a very high house payment that she had no funds to make.

Being the oldest child, I ended up watching my brother and sister. until my mother could organize a life as single working mother. She went for a second husband to ease things.

But no child readily accepts a stepfather, especially not a violent one.

All I ever wanted to do was escape. So when I saw an opportunity to skip the last year of high school to start college a year early, I went for it. I met my man in college that I had put myself through..

We were married, we had a child, so when our little girl was three years old we changed continents.

This required a lot of adjustment. I was happy that my daughter had already been vaccinated in the U. S. because she had gotten the measles and rubella vaccine, which was not yet required in Italy.

This is an indication of the difference between the old and new worlds. The U.S. was more likely to trust medical improvements, in the old world they took a bit longer.

There were lots of little differences. The Catholic school kept using aprons, so students were the same for a longer period of time. But that is now disappearing.

I thought I would spend more time with old world style, but slowly they are becoming more like the U.S. Excerpt for bureaucracy, of which they tend to have too much.

Having decided to accept the differences I now had Ito accept no more nice weather, camellia forest.

I would have to become familiar with a different lifestyle.

I worked hard for my independence, but in the old world women have a little harder time being accepted. There is still some difficulty
