Once is Still Once

Contemporary Lesbian Romance

Written in response to: "Your protagonist discovers they’ve been wrong about the most important thing in their life." as part of The Lie They Believe with Abbie Emmons.

The bar pulsed with life.

A chaotic symphony of laughter.

Bodies pressed too close in the humid late-evening air.

Megan leaned against the scarred wooden counter. The edge dug into her hip. Her friend, Jess, gripped her arm with insistent fingers.

“…didn’t you say you’re over her?!” Jess said. Her voice cut through the din like a knife. “Then act like it.”

Megan straightened. She forced a smile. One that didn’t reach her eyes.

The crowd surged around them.

She was fine. Had told everyone as much since the breakup two weeks ago.

The whispers had followed her. Cheated on, dumped the cheater. Good for her. But she’d been the one to end it, right? After all, it was just once. RIGHT?!

“I am fine,” Megan replied. Her tone was light. Almost dismissive. Then, she scanned the room… avoiding Jess’s probing gaze. “It wasn’t that serious. It was just once.”

Jess rolled her eyes. But… she didn’t push further. Instead, she nodded toward a woman at the far end of the bar. The woman was perched on a stool with an easy posture. And her dark hair fell in loose waves over one shoulder.

“Go. Go… talk to her,” Jess urged. Then, she gave Megan a gentle shove. “You need this… um, live a little.”

Megan hesitated.

Her fingers tightened around the stem of an empty glass she’d been nursing. The bar’s lights cast flickering shadows across the woman’s face. Highlighting the sharp line of her jaw.

What was the harm?

She nodded to Jess, who grinned triumphantly, and pushed off the counter.

Megan felt the heat of bodies against her sides as she weaved through the throng. The bass from the speakers thrummed in her chest.

“Mind if… I join you?” Megan asked. Then, she slid onto the stool beside her.

The woman turned. Her gaze was steady and appraising. Not rushed or overly eager. Nope.

Up close, she had a calm presence. Like someone who didn’t need to fill the silence. “Sure. I’m Riley.”

“Megan.” She signaled the bartender. “Beer for me. Whatever’s on tap.”

Riley ordered a gin and tonic and then, they fell into easy chatter. The bar’s noise wrapped around them. But, Riley leaned in just enough to be heard… and her words laced with dry humor.

“First time here?” Riley asked… with a faint smile tugging at her lips.

“Nah, but… it’s been a while. Friends dragged me out tonight.” Megan chuckled. Though it came out tighter than intended. Riley’s eyes lingered. She was observant… as if reading the undercurrent.

The drinks arrived. Condensation beaded on the glasses. Megan lifted her beer. The cool foam brushed her upper lip as she took a sip. It hit her tongue. It was slightly metallic. Flat. And just wrong. Like biting into something spoiled.

She blinked… a flicker crossing her face. Missing the tail end of Riley’s question about the band playing in the corner.

“You okay?” Riley asked, her brow furrowing just a touch.

“Yeah. Just… bad beer.” Megan set it down, forcing another sip to chase the aftertaste.

The conversation flowed on. Riley shared a quick story about a disastrous date that ended in a spilled tray of nachos. Drawing a genuine laugh from Megan.

There was a subtle pull in Riley’s gaze.

A quiet flirtation in the way she tilted her head.

But, nothing overt… just enough to make the energy between them noticeable.

“So… what brings you here, really?” Riley asked after a pause… her tone casual but direct.

Megan shrugged, tracing the rim of her glass. “Friends dragged me out. Just got out of something, you know? Needed to shake it off.”

Riley nodded. Waiting without pressure. Megan felt the words spill out… unbidden but light. “It wasn’t that bad, though. People mess up. It was just once.”

Riley’s expression didn’t shift much. But… her eyes sharpened. She took a measured sip of her drink, the ice clinking softly. “Once is still once.”

Megan’s fingers stilled on the glass. “That’s… not how it works.”

“That’s exactly how it works.” Riley’s voice was firm. Unyielding… but not aggressive… more steady, like stating a fact.

The bar’s clamor seemed to fade at the edges. The press of bodies was distant. Riley continued. Her gaze was unwavering. “If someone does something like that, I leave. No second chances on the big stuff.”

Silence stretched between them. Taut and unbroken. The kind that demanded nothing yet filled the space. Megan reached for her beer again… lifting it mechanically. The second sip amplified the off notes; metallic tang sharper now, flatness coating her throat like regret.

Fragments surfaced uninvited: the dim kitchen light, her ex’s voice low and pleading, “… it didn’t mean anything.”

She set the glass down harder than intended… the liquid sloshing. It wasn’t about the cheating, not really. The realization landed clean and late. Cutting through the noise in her head. She hadn’t stayed because she loved her. She’d stayed because she thought that’s what love required… tolerating the cracks until they swallowed you whole.

Riley watched her. Patient. The question hang unspoken until she voiced it. “So what would you do now?”

Megan paused, her breath catching visibly… chest rising and falling in the dim light. The hesitation showed in the way her shoulders tensed. Her eyes flicked to the bar top. Then, quiet but resolute: “Leave… I will leave.”

Riley studied her for a beat. A subtle nod acknowledging the shift… before turning back to her drink.

Megan pushed the unfinished beer away. The foam settled flat against the sides. She didn’t explain… didn’t take another sip. The glass sat there, abandoned, as the bar’s energy swirled on around them.

As Megan slid off the stool, the weight of it all settled. Not the betrayal… but the lie she’d told herself in that kitchen. Night after night.

Love was a choice… and she’d chosen wrong before.

Now, she stepped into the crowd. And felt the first real breath of freedom. The kind that didn’t come from forgiving the unforgivable.
