Dead of The Ex
Jazz is playing, servers are running in the amber lit room. Two voices are connecting. This could be the start of a story or end of someone’s.
Trisha speaking
“l like Laufey.”
Rey noticed the green spark in Trisha’s eyes and answered.
“You like Laufey I love her.”
Trisha also notices his gaze and smiles. Rey noticed the air was getting heavy. The piano player keeps hitting a single note.
A voice from afar.
“I thought your favorite artist was Mr. Morale.”
They both look sideways A girl with black soulless eyes as if you stare too long and those eyes will devour you in a black dress and fedora.
“Oh, hi Lisa what are you doing here.”
Lisa approached the table and started sliding her fingers on Trisha’s chair.
“I know we are not dating but I can’t even say hi to you”
“You can but aren’t you supposed to be dead.”
“Hey, don’t throw the D word like that. It’s rude to say things like this in front of your new girl. Is she your girlfriend?”
Trisha was shaken by the sudden ominous vibe which no one else noticed and tried to answer her.
“This is our first date.”
“First date it seems I am quite early aren’t I Rey?”
“What do you mean by quite early?”
Rey answering her with hesitation.
“She means nothing. What are you doing here?”
“I live in a cemetery now, but I still have the right to traumatize you.”
“No, you can’t.”
“Ask your first date. I am sorry I didn’t get your name sweetie.”
“I am Trisha, and she is right these are the rules no matter dead or alive an ex can always come to play.”
Lisa again looks at Trisha’s eyes as if her green pupils are jewels which she will pluck out to make rings.
“Mind if I join you guys.”
“I don’t but Trisha might be uncomfortable with you being here.”
Trisha was longing to get out of there and get fresh air, but she didn’t want to look weak.
Trisha “I don’t.”
Lisa pulls a chair and moves it close to Trisha’s.
“He always wears this green jacket on first dates.”
“Dates?”
“Yes dates, his previous ex told me when we were still together.
Lisa grabs a green olive from Trisha’s table and starts dissecting it. Trisha’s eyes were focused on the knife clenching her fist, she still asked a question fearing it was something she would regret.
“Do all your exes end up seeing each other?”
Rey also noticed Trisha was getting uncomfortable, but he knew he couldn’t do anything. In his mind he kept repeating it’s too late. I shouldn’t have come today.
“She is teasing you don’t believe every word that comes from her lips. I don’t think I’ll have exes from now on.”
Trisha felt relief after hearing those words, she blushed giving a soft smile. Lisa through her eyes was speaking to him pathetic Liar.
“Trisha, would you like to know how I ended up in a cemetery”
“I don’t think she is interested”
Trisha again answered her question hesitantly as if she was enchanted and had no other choice and that she was getting closer to the edge of a roof.
“I will hear your story.”
Rey interrupts her.
“I don’t think we need to hear this.”
“SILENCE.”
The knife in Lisa’s hand chipped. And one of the flying shards hit Trisha’s hand scratching her.
“Oh, I’m sorry, sweetie. Are you okay?”
“I am fine it’s just a scratch.”
Rey didn’t say a single word, he knew it was too late and nothing can be done now. Lisa grabs a wet napkin and placed it on her hand to check for bleeding.
“Thank you but I am good. You can tell the story.”
The drums grew heavier; Lisa started to tap her foot as if she was getting possessed by the beat.
“It happened when we were on our sixth date. We were in an amusement park it was a lemon evening, and we were playing a shooting game. You remember that.”
“Yes, I do.”
“He was trying to win a teddy for me in a shooting game.”
Lisa gets up and starts to walk around the table, she goes behind Trisha and starts to tap her chair matching the tempo of the drums, continuing the story.
“Haven’t seen you from a while.”
“I heard it from behind and felt something terrible was about to happen.”
“I looked and saw a woman with black lips. I forgot her name.”
Rey was trying to avoid Trisha’s gaze and answered.
“Mellisa.”
“And who was Mellisa?”
“She was my ex.’
“Dead or Alive.”
“Dead.”
Trisha was on the edge of the roof and if she asked one more question she would fall.
“Do all your exes end up dying?”
Rey knew no answer would satisfy her and kept silent.
“I can assure you he didn’t kill anyone he is an honest guy.”
Trisha was getting up to leave but Lisa pinned her shoulders down.
“Before leaving listen to the story of a dead soul.”
Again, Trisha couldn’t comprehend why but each word from Lisa’s mouth was like an enchantment spell which she couldn’t defy.
“So, she joined us and started getting close to me, as if I was her ex. It was my turn. I grabbed the gun, but my aim was not good. I was aiming when she came close to me took the rifle from underneath and slightly shifted it.”
Rey was getting uncomfortable and he started to pull the tablecloth Trisha noticed that and looked at him as if she was talking to her a little more time and then we would leave.
Lisa, noticing the tension, started to walk standing behind Rey’s chair.
“Three of us were having a good time. Mellisa asked me a question.”
Lisa locked her eyes on Trisha.
“Trisha, you know the question she asked me.”
“No.”
“You know it.”
“How will I know I was not there.”
Lisa started to stomp her foot at the table and asked aggressively.
“You know it now say it.”
Trisha slowly said the words. Trisha felt as if her face was wrapped in a plastic bag making it hard to breathe.
“Would you like to know how I ended up in the cemetery.”
The drums stopped, Lisa smiled. Rey’s mind went blank. Trisha felt her one foot in the air and the other at the edge of the roof.
“It was Mellisa’s turn. She was telling us the story of her death, and I felt the need to leave the amusement park and lock myself in a cabinet. I turned back and started to walk away from them. I was walking and everything started to get blurry. I fell on my knees and looked back. Mellisa was holding a Glock, and I realized she shot me.”
Trisha was crying, she knew she was not crying for Lisa, she was crying for the unforeseen future.
“Why did she kill you?”
“I think all his exes have this tendency.”
“All exes.”
Trisha got up and started to run towards the door. She was almost at the door.
A voice from behind.
“Hey, Trisha look back.”
Blood was scattered on the nearby tables Lisa was holding a hatchet. Trisha realized it was her blood and that she was finally off the roof.
Trisha was on the floor, her eyes wide open watching Rey sitting at the table, he didn’t even flinch and curtains closed for her.
“Finally, my turn is over.”
Lisa started to walk with the hatchet in hand blood dripping from it. She approaches Rey and swings it smashing it into the table.
“How pathetic you are. The curse can’t be broken, and you still find someone to love each time.”
Lisa drags Rey’s chair toward Trisha.
“She will be the next ex, and you know she will come to kill, and I know you will again find someone to love, and that girl will be lying there next time.”
Lisa picks up the hatchet and walks out of the restaurant smiling melancholically.
Rey sits there for a moment and walks out of the restaurant lighting a cigarette.
“You know her eyes were really beautiful.”
