Versailles would have been the better choice, but Paris was fine. After all, Jack was born, and died, in Paris. And really, who can complain about being in Paris? Especially this time of year. The autumnal glow that bounces off century old stones and quaint shops is enchanting. Soft winds rustled the few remaining leaves on the trees. As beautiful as it was, there was a bit of sadness to Paris. Almost as if there was a nod to nostalgia and all the history that had taken place in this city. There’s worse places to go for a funeral. A small crowd, quite respectable in size, had gathered to honor Jack’s life.
Dearly beloved, we gather today to celebrate and remember the life of Jack. Jack was not everyone’s cup of tea but he was universally admired for his talent and dedication. Jack taught us that success is found through perseverance, determination and tirelessly pursuing excellence.
Tom was a quiet guy who enjoyed the simple things in life. Although successful, he had never had a breakthrough. He’d lived in the area his entire life but rarely had the opportunity to be around the likes of Jack. That’s why, 32 years ago, Tom was delighted to witness Jack’s birth. A once in a lifetime opportunity, it had happened so quickly! His mother was thrilled and who could blame her? She had waited months for the moment to meet her precious son. The day Jack was born was a bright, March morning. It was a bluebird day. Tom had the privilege of watching Jack grow up. Jack was smart, alert and focused. It was almost as if Jack knew he was destined for great things. Tom always believed that Jack was special and Jack proved him right. 32 years didn’t seem long enough.
In his younger years, he was often described as bright and precocious. Those traits carried with him into his school years. Jack attended some of the most prestigious schools in the world, including an excellent boarding school in Ocala, Florida. His colleagues will recall his work ethic and sense of dedication to his education during his time in Florida.
Work ethic? Dedication? Interesting choice of words. John wasn’t sure if he could agree with that assessment of Jack. Teaching Jack was not for the faint of heart. John could sum up Jack in one word: Lucky. Jack had a charismatic streak that seemed to propel him in whichever direction he chose. John and Jack didn’t always get along. The one description he agreed with was precocious. Along with that came arrogance that was hard to ignore. Despite the difficulties of teaching Jack, it was undisputed that his potential was infinite. As his schooling progressed, the friendship grew less and less acrimonious. Eventually, John was a trusted mentor to Jack. A mutual respect was formed and the team worked well together for many years. John became one of the most important people in Jack’s life, a constant presence. His sudden death rattled John. He knew that Jack wouldn’t live forever, and yet, at times, Jack seemed immortal.
Jack went on to achieve a highly lucrative career. Those that were by his side during this era of his life recalled him as unparalleled in his talent, appreciative of those around him and a bit moody at times.
He was such an asshole. Ed had lived next door to Jack for a few years. At one point, Jack had moved out. Ed barely had time to miss him before Jack returned. Jack wasn’t mean. He was arrogant, obnoxious and abrasive. Jack had a proclivity for staying up late, loud gatherings and no respect for his neighbors. Jack’s arrogance was palpable. Everyone knew that Jack was immensely talented but the arrogance cast a sour light on him. The foolishness was overlooked by his success. By the next morning, no matter what, Jack was back to work. Ed had to respect him for that: Jack was dedicated.
Although he had several children, Jack never married. During the pinnacle of his career, he was described as a “clever prodigy.” Jack was no strange to travel and had spent time in Europe and the Middle East. People who worked with Jack during this time remember him as formidable and flawless.
When Bobby began his career, he was enamored by Jack. To be fair, who wasn’t? Jack was stunning and highly successful. When Jack entered the room, people looked. Conversations stopped. Time stood still. When an opportunity presented itself to work with John, and thus to be in Jack’s orbit, Bobby jumped. On the first day, John had suggested that Bobby and Jack work together. Bobby was petrified. Jack was the best of the best. Bobby summoned the courage and the two began a seamless partnership. Jack and Bobby’s friendship blossomed. Bobby was an influential force of positivity in Jack’s life. The ying to his yang. A steady, constant presence that helped Jack find focus and calmness. It was an enduring partnership that lasted until a few years prior to Jack’s death.
At the end of his life, Jack returned to his ancestral land upon which we now stand. Jack worked hard, never quit and inspired many. Truly, a life well lived.
Heads bowed, a short prayer was said, and the crowd began to disperse. John walked up to Tom. These two men had known each other for decades.
“How’s it going, Tom?” John was genuinely happy to see him.
Tom smiled. “Good, but we’re getting old, aren’t we?”
Both men laughed. They walked towards the parking lot and as they got closer, John told Tom to wait a moment while he grabbed an item from his car.
“I want you to have it. It was the last halter he wore on the track.”
From Churchill to Saratoga, Jack truly was a phenomenal racehorse.
Both smiled as the halter was exchanged.
“Paris is beautiful this time of year, isn’t it?” Tom pondered.
“It’s always been my favorite place in Kentucky.”
