Emma and I quickly walked to advanced math and found our seats. I slid next to Emma and listened to the teacher. As our teacher explained our new project I thought about asking Emma to be partners, knowing that she was so kind, and understanding. I hoped that she thought of me like that too. “Hey Emma! Do you want to be partners?” I whispered. She quickly nodded and we both shifted our gaze back to the teacher.
After math was over we headed back to the Farmily. The lights were dimmed when me and Emma came in, and Ms. Starry was about to start the snack-time Spellie. I was about to sit in my seat near the door, but quickly realized that it was moved. I walked over to Ms. Starry’s desk, planning to ask her why and where she moved my desk.
“Ms. Starry, did you move my desk?” I asked curiously.
“Oh, yes! Sorry, I forgot to tell you. I noticed that over some time, you made a new friend. I wanted to support that friendship so I moved you next to Emma. If you want me to move you back I can.” Ms. Starry explained.
“Oh! Thank you so much for doing that, and of course I would like to stay!” I said as I walked over to my new seat near Emma. “Emma! Guess what!?” I asked excitedly.
“Chicken butt?” she said in a joking manner.
“I got moved next to your desk!” I said as I sat down next to her.
“Really!? I can’t believe I didn’t notice that!” Emma said in surprise.
“That’s okay! You were probably just really focused on your work.” I said as I noticed her math homework on her desk along with lots of eraser dust.
The bright blue Spellie website appeared on Ms. Starry’s projector.
“Spellie is starting! Which level should we do today class?” Ms Starry announced.
“Hard!” a boy from the back shouted.
“No! That level is too hard, Easy is the best!” another boy from the front shouted.
“How about medium! That’s in between both of your requests!” Ms. Starry said enthusiastically.
“Fine.” said both of the boys in sync.
After Spellie, it was time for specials. Today, I had Strings. It was definitely something that I wanted to try. I had always wanted to do the violin, and now I finally got to try it! “What if I’m alone again? What if Emma isn’t in my Strings class? What if Emma isn’t even doing Strings!?” I thought harshly as Emma tapped me on the shoulder and stopped the thought.
“Wait, are you doing Strings today for specials?” I asked impatiently.
“Yes-and I was just about to ask you the same thing! I’m so happy that we’re together!” Emma said excitedly.
“Yay! I was so worried that I would be alone, and I’m so thankful that I’m not!” I said relived.
We started to walk down to the auditorium. When we arrived, me and Emma were in the front of the Strings class line. I peeked inside and saw a big, intimidating stage that we would perform our violins on. I looked at Emma. I observed that both me and Emma seemed to be the only people without our violins.
“Emma! Do you have your violin!? I don’t think I got mine yet!”
“No! This stinks! I just hope the Strings teacher doesn’t get upset with us.” Emma said unhappily.
A few moments of silence passed before the door to the auditorium opened suddenly. A lady with a bold taste in style appeared out of the door. She had red jewels on everything. Her shoes, earrings, necklace, bracelet, shirt, and pants were covered in red jewels. I froze to take in the sight.
“Well, what are you waiting for? Get in there and sit down.” She said sternly as she pointed to the entrance of the auditorium.
I walked into the cold space, still shocked that I got yelled at by the Strings teacher, and her appearance. I rushed to find a seat next to Emma, but a girl with blonde hair in a ribbed yellow shirt was already sitting there. She glared at me, her eyes reading “Get away from me”.
I quickly sat down in a different seat, before the Strings teacher could yell at me again.
“Great. I guess I made an awesome first impression on my new classmates.” I thought sarcastically as I glanced at the girl wearing the yellow shirt.
“Ok new students! Please make your way off of the stage, and we will start our interviews!” said our assistant Strings teacher excitedly.
I was the opposite of excited. I was nervous; so nervous. I do not like any sort of test taking. I think the process is terrible. First, they give you a couple of work sheets to “prepare” you, then they just give you the test! Whenever I hear the word “test”, or anything like it, I just want to hide somewhere alone. But here, and now, I need to be brave.
“You’ve got this, Luna. Just give it your best shot. What’s the worst that could happen?” I told myself over, and over.
After Strings was over, I ran to catch up to Emma.
“I really wanted to sit with you at Strings, but I didn’t get the chance to. Do you know who you sat with?” I said to Emma casually.
“Oh! Sorry, and maybe we could sit together next time! The girl that sat next to me is named Sienna. She was really nice, and she even knows how to play the trumpet! Why did you ask, Luna?” exclaimed Emma, seeming to smile as she mentioned “Sienna”.
“Oh nothing. I was just trying to get to know everyone since I’m new.” I replied. That was a lie. I mean, of course I want to get to know everyone, I was just wondering who was replacing my friendship with Emma. I know that Emma, and anyone can have more than one friend, but why hate me and steal my only friend?
“Me and Emma were both new to this school, and Strings. Why is Sienna so nice to Emma but not to me? What did I ever do to make Sienna dislike me?” I thought repeatedly, searching through my knowledge for any interaction with a girl named Sienna. I found nothing.
I sighed, but quickly tried to cheer myself up. I was still sitting next to Emma in the Farmily! As I walked into my classroom, I overheard Sienna asking Emma “Do you want to sit with me on the bus? Maybe you could come over after!” My mouth dropped open and I ran to the bathroom. I was so mad. Sienna was literally trying to steal my only friend at this school! I took a deep breath and swiftly walked back to class.
I rushed back into the classroom and ran over to Emma and Sienna. “Hey guys! I heard Emma is coming over to your house, Sienna, Could I come too?” I asked hopefully.
Sienna winced, I knew she didn’t want me to come but why? “Um, my mom only lets me have one friend over. Sorry.” Sienna said as she walked away. Ugh, this was going to be hard.
