No One Asked for the Truth

When I first heard the rumor, it was not the lie that broke me. What broke me was that no one came to ask me for the truth. It felt as if the verdict had already been delivered, and I was merely the last person to be informed of my own sentence.Strange, isn’t it? People love courts—not the part where evidence is heard, but the part where they get to play the judge. Truth is often complicated. Rumors are convenient. They require neither wisdom nor proof, only a tongue willing to repeat them. One afternoon, I was walking down the street. The air was heavy, the asphalt still holding the heat of the day, and people moved as though they were searching for entertainment in someone else’s life. Two women passed by me.One whispered, “Is that the girl?”The other looked at me for a second. There was no curiosity in her eyes, only that secret pleasure people sometimes feel when they are allowed to examine another person’s wound. She smiled with one corner of her mouth.“She looks different from the outside.”I kept walking, pretending I had not heard. But some words do not enter through the ears. They go straight into the heart, and the heart is far more fragile than hearing. After that day, I began to notice people’s eyes differently. I saw things I had never seen before: suspicion, curiosity, hidden satisfaction.Because people sometimes find comfort in watching others fall.Of course, they would never admit it.They wrap it in polite phrases: “I just heard,” “Everyone is talking,” “I was only curious.”Human beings have a strange talent for making even cruelty sound well-mannered.The most terrifying thing about a rumor is that it does not need truth. It only needs repetition. One person says it.Another believes it.A third decorates it.A fourth spreads it.And by the fifth, they speak as if they have known your soul for years. As if your life no longer belongs to you, but to the mouths of other people.I wanted to defend myself.I wanted it desperately.I wanted to stand before everyone and say, “You do not know the truth.”But then I realized something.A person who spends all their time explaining themselves to everyone eventually forgets who they are, because they stop seeking truth and start seeking approval. And I was tired. Not in body. When the soul grows tired, it becomes far heavier. The body can sleep and recover. The soul can remain awake in pain for years. One night, I looked into the mirror. The face was familiar. But the person living behind my eyes felt like a stranger. And I asked myself:“Am I the person they say I am?”That question frightened me more than the rumor itself.Because sometimes a person is not destroyed by other people’s lies, but by their own doubt.Their words began to take root inside me, as if a foreign seed had been planted in my heart. And then I made the greatest mistake of all:I began to see myself through the eyes of others. That is where a person truly gets lost. Not when they hear the lie, but when they start repeating it inside themselves.Days passed. The rumors changed.People’s attention is never permanent.Today they discuss you; tomorrow they discuss someone else.Sometimes people stare at another person’s wound just to forget their own.And eventually, I understood something:What hurt me was not their words. What hurt me was that I had placed their opinion above my own truth. That night, it was raining.Drops of water slid down the windowpane. The city was silent. The streets were wet, the sky unbearably heavy. And for the first time, I was not tired of the darkness outside me.I was tired of the darkness within me.I sat looking at the sky for a long time until the question that had been gathering inside me for years finally reached my lips:“O Allah… why did You leave me in the hands of people’s tongues?”

There was pain in that question.Loneliness.And worst of all, the fear of losing myself.I waited for an answer. The sky did not split open.No miracle came. There was only silence. But some silences are not empty. In some silences, Allah speaks directly to the heart of His servant. And in that moment, I felt a truth deeper than any human judgment.People may misunderstand me.But my Lord has never misunderstood me.I had spent years trying to explain myself to people, while the One who created me had already known me completely. He knew the words I never said.He knew the nights I cried alone. He knew the wounds no one had ever seen.He even knew the pain I tried to hide from myself. And then something broke inside me.Not the kind of breaking that destroys a person. The breaking of pride. The breaking of my need to be accepted by everyone.I whispered:“My Lord, even if the whole world misunderstands me, it is enough that You know me.”And I cried. Not the cry of weakness. The cry of pain that had turned to stone inside me and was finally melting. When I placed my forehead on the ground in sujood, I understood something for the first time:A person can stand tall before people, but before Allah, they can only stand in truth.I did not defend myself to Him.Allah does not need evidence.I only placed my exhaustion before Him.And a strange peace entered my heart.Perhaps Allah did not protect me from the rumors. But He protected me from disappearing inside them. That night, I understood something else.Sometimes Allah lets a servant fall from people’s eyes so that they stop seeing themselves through people’s eyes.Sometimes He leaves you alone so that you can learn the difference between loneliness and closeness to Him.Sometimes every door closes so that you can finally see that the door of sujood was never closed. That night, I looked not at the sky, but into the deepest part of my heart. And I saw that a light was still there.People’s words had not extinguished it.Because that light was not from them.It was from Allah. And finally, I understood:The greatest salvation is not being proven innocent. The greatest salvation is reaching a day when your heart can say:“My Lord, You know me. I have returned to You.”Because in the end, every voice will fall silent.Every judgment will end.Every rumor will be forgotten. But the truth between a human being and their Lord will remain. And at last, I understood:People’s words did not break me.What broke me was allowing those words to enter my heart. And Allah let light enter through the places where I had been broken.

I am from the Critique Circle, and they sent me your story. Thank you for sharing this transparent and deeply reflective piece. You captured the raw ache of living under the weight of others’ judgments, and wove it seamlessly with theological insight. I especially loved the moment of self‑doubt ‘Am I the person they say I am?’ which perfectly illustrates how words can plant seeds that grow like weeds in the heart. Thank you for sharing this!! Welcome to Reedsy! :).

Wow--what a way to describe internal emotion and the character's need to feel something from someone other a person. I believe your story is well written from an emotional standpoint.
Keep writing!
