Buzz Kill!

Trigger Warning- This short story contains Strong Language, Suspense, and the Death of Insects!

Introduction- Them!

“We’re not alone. Did you hear that?” Nell asked her guests at the dinner party. She could hear buzzing coming from overhead. “Yikes! Do we kill it?! I’m allergic to bees!” she exclaimed as she spotted it. It was literally ginormous. Its magnificent stinger was incredibly visible and scary. Terrifying actually. Nell felt shivers, and as the bee approached her, she picked up her dinner plate, and batted the bee across the room. “Take that! Take that you monster!” But the bee just wanted a sip of her red wine, but little did he understand that she was allergic, Nell’s fear of bees was so bad. Scary bad. Soon, it would get worse! A simple bee sting was not the way that Nell wanted to die! It was kill or be killed, and Nell had to protect everyone- especially herself.

The dinner guests had all lost their appetites, and they quickly left paranoid looking over their shoulders as if they were going to die if they did not.

Chapter One- Afterwards.

“We were having a good night!” said Ian as he grabbed his headset. “Everyone left in a hurry!”

“But I got the bee!” said Nell. “What in the world am I guilty of doing, but saving my friends from an attack?! And…” she hit him, “fuck you for not grabbing the fly swatter, or you could have handed me one of your gay slippers. I could’ve whacked it quite hard with that, but you just sat there. The look on your damn face equaled priceless!”

”Well, I didn’t want to kill it! I was just about to open the damn window!” said Ian.

”You sat right in that chair, and you did nothing! Wait… Did you hear that?! Hmm. Maybe it’s nothing.” said Nell.

Then, angry, Ian turned on his headset, and he blared, “Winter,” by TV on the Radio on repeat, and soon he was dead asleep on the couch. Yes, he was lazy. He never cooked or cleaned. He just wanted to have his girlfriend treat him like a king, but, as of lately, she was distracted by other things, and Ian had never felt so neglected in his life. He just wanted his headset and his music.

”Well! I guess I’ll clean up everything myself!” exclaimed Nell.

Chapter Two- “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands!”

At choir rehearsal, Nell was about to hit the high note to her favorite song- then she saw it. Flying around a ceiling vent- there was a bee!

“We’re not alone! Help me kill it!” She screamed right into the microphone, and Ian, who wore his gay slippers to practice, threw her one, and Nell killed that fucking bee with just one splat! Amazing was her precision. The kill felt good. She felt braver than she ever thought she could. Then it was off to the pharmacist to get an EpiPen. The damn bees seemed to be following poor Nell wherever she went. She had never even seen a beehive until she moved to Northwest Arkansas, but one day, one appeared in her shed. It was not there one day, but it was there the next, and it was big and scary. Nell retrieved the EpiPen, then it was off to the corner store for sprays and fly swatters.

Chapter Three- Sex Equals Death!

As she flew in the sky, Callie attracted multiple male drones, and after they had sex in the air with her, they died. She ate at the honeybee’s corpses. Castrated, and humiliated, they fell to the ground, and she was proud of herself as she made it back to her hive. Pleased more than ever, Callie smiled as she entered the hive, then, there was a smell that she was not familiar with. It was floral. Pretty even. Then the queen felt a chilling feeling on her back. Wetness. Stickiness. Oh, but whatever it was- whatever liquid that had just been sprayed by Nell- hit her back, and got into her orifices, and it was delicious. Scrumptious! Just like that last plant that she had fucked- the taste took her back to her childhood, and she wanted to die of happiness the more she licked at the liquid, and she did. Callie’s death was quick, and Nell kept spraying while dozens of bees escaped. What was soon to follow could very well send Nell right straight to hell!

Chapter Four- Oh, If You Only Knew!

Oh, if you only knew how badly Nell wanted to kill the damn bees that day in the heat in the shed. Confidently, she got most of them- no exterminator necessary! Yes, Nell was a badass. Tough to the core. Motivated in every task- she attacked those darn things that day, and now she felt the rest were going to come after her. The honeybees that got away became fixated on Nell. They wanted to send that bitch right straight to hell! As if cursed by Callie, and her hive of hard working drones, she did not regret what she did. She would do anything. She would do anything to protect her home from an insect invasion. She had dealt with maggots before. Bees were not gonna fly. Not in her house.

The hive was now soggy, and dripping poisoned honey that the maggots would choke on. Dead bees covered the floor of the shed, and Nell hired someone to clean it all up- maggots included as they were drawn to the sweetness.

Chapter Five- As Soon As Possible!

“There’s another one! Oh, my God! It’s as if they’re following me!” screamed Nell as a bee climbed out of her shower drain during a midnight rinsing. “Ian!” And he did not show up. Practically dead asleep on the couch, he could not hear a word she was saying. He was oblivious to the world. Stupid, oblivious, and lazy were his adjectives. All he could hear was Jasmine Thompson’s version of, “I Try,” which blared on repeat on his headset. Nell was fucked. She had to kill it as soon as possible, but then another one came in, and another one, and another one! Then the shower head broke, and in flew more bees! Fucked was an easy, a nice way to put it. Screwed? No, that does not even begin to describe Nell’s position. Sting after vicious sting- they got her.

This is for Callie! Thought the bees as they used their lives to avenge their queen. Naked, Nell slipped. She grabbed onto her shower curtain that had a beautiful pine tree pattern. She had got it on clearance. Only three dollars! Of course the curtain fell, and so did she. As her head hit the ceramic soap holder, Ian sneezed, and snapped out of it. He kinda needed to pee. Nell tried to get up, but, no, she could not.

Chapter Six- Nightmares Come from Satan!

Ian loved to sleep, but lately he was having nightmares that were accompanied with horrific night sweats, leg cramps, and the scary need to catch his breath. So, in order to combat this, he would blare nice songs on repeat that he could fall asleep to with his beloved headset that was affecting his hearing. He loved listening to his favorite songs over and over, and while Nell was being stung over and over, he got up with the sudden urge to urinate, so he went to the bathroom. He knocked on the door, and what did he find, but poor Nell covering herself with her beautiful pine tree shower curtain. He saw the look on her face, so he took off his headset- then all he could hear was,

“Where were you? Look! We’re not alone! The bees! Get me out of here! The bees! I need my pen! Get me my pen!” She exclaimed, and he just stared at her in horror. Dead bees covered her body, and then Ian heard a buzzing sound. Frightened to death, he exited the bathroom, shut the door behind him, and he peed himself right there on the spot. All Nell could do was scream bloody murder as the bee stung her next to her right eye.

Chapter Seven- Ouch!

Callie never saw Nell’s attack coming, and Nell, who screamed, and screamed just wanted to die. She wetted a cloth with cold water, and held it up to her eye. Then, Ian returned, and slid the EpiPen, and his cell phone under the door then he went straight home. He could not handle any more.

Ian had left all terrified and shaking. Nell’s heart went cold. She never thought that Ian could be so bold.

Nell took the shot just like a champ. She did not even need a belt for her teeth to clamp. The pain subsided, and the swelling withdrew, and she lived to see another day. She now has a story to tell you, but wait!

“Did you hear that?!” she said out loud. She thought she had heard that damned familiar buzzing sound!

My biggest nightmare - being allergic and phobic of bees myself! The bees become a threatening presence, and the shower scene is insanely scary! So chilling in the best way. Great take on the prompt! Well done.
