Jane Jones: Hi wonderful people, I’m new to the school so I don’t have any of your phone numbers. I know it’s half-term and it’s late - or early - in the day right now :) but I hope it’s not too much to ask to get a little info from you all about a trip and my son [01:01]

Jane Jones: I can’t get hold of my son, Festus Jones. He’s not answering his mobile. It’s not like him at all. He’s very responsible. He’s a model student, model son and a part-time model. He’s on the Year 10 skiing trip right now in the Pyrenees. I’ve also been phoning the teachers responsible for the trip. Can’t get in touch with them either! [01:02]

Jane Jones: Hello? Anyone? [01:03]

Jane Jones: This is a virtual wasteland [01:04]

Jane Jones: If this dumb platform allowed me to put emojis, I’d be hurling quite a few at you all right now. I’ve been on here before and it’s always been flooded with traffic, but now that I actually need something there’s only virtual tumbleweed [01:05]

Jane Jones: It’s outrageous that none of you are coming online and answering me [01:06]

Jane Jones: Come on! [01:06]

Jane Jones: Anyone there? [01:07]

Jane Jones: You people obviously haven’t seen Alive. If you had, you’d know that a plane carrying a group of rugby students crashes in the Andes Mountains. You don’t want to know what the survivors ended up eating to keep alive. Festus is a vegetarian so that won’t be an option for him! [01:08]

Mr Stone: Good morning, Mrs Jones [01:09]

Jane Jones: Finally! Mr Stone, are you the middle-aged art teacher? Festus told me that your name was ‘Mr Stoned’. He said that’s why you always look so happy and tell terrible jokes. Anyways, do you know anything about the Year 10 skiing trip or not? If so, what’s your phone number? [01:10]

Mr Stone: School policy prevents me from sharing my personal number, Mrs Jones. Amongst other things, there are safeguarding and confidentiality considerations. It’s wrong. I’ll send you an email from my school account with a little more information. That way, we can ensure that any sensitive details remain within the appropriate channels [01:12]

Jane Jones: You think I could care about red tape at a time like this? Save your policies, Mr Stone. Tell me what’s going on with my child! [01:13]

Mr Stone: I’ve sent the email through, Mrs Jones. I’m in contact with the teachers over there and I’ve raised your concern with them. The member of staff leading the trip will be in touch with you later this morning [01:16]

Jane Jones: Just got your email. What the hell do you mean with ‘he had his phone confiscated due to misuse’? It’s the right of every child to have his phone. I have not granted permission for this so-called ‘sanction’. This reminds me of an after school detention that the school tried to give him some weeks ago. This won’t end here! [01:19]

Jane Jones: You just sent me another email with ANOTHER scanned document that I’d apparently signed, Mr Stoned!!!!!! I didn’t sign any of those documents. Someone must have forged them. I’ll be waiting for that phone call with bated breath so that I can unleash hell today. Call this a school? More like a bad joke. By the way, stop hiding behind emails, Mr Stoner. Anything that you’ve got to say, you can say here so that everyone can see [01:22]

Mr Stone: Mrs Jones's got her own obligations... [01:23]

Jane Jones: I’ve had enough of this. I’m going there to pick him up. Send me the details, Mr Stoned – if you’re capable of doing so! [01:25]

Mr Stone: With pleasure, Mrs Jones [01:24]

Mr Stone: Although, I should mention something [01:25]

Jane Jones: Like what? [01:25]

Mr Stone: Ordinarily, it would be highly unprofessional of me to discuss matters of this nature through a public forum such as this. However, since you’ve specifically asked me to do so, I’ll send you some links to sites where the same objects your son has apparently purchased over there using his mobile phone are available. I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions. He has told us that he returned the items to the shops once the teachers became aware of the situation, although I should stress that we have been unable to independently verify that [01:26]

Jane Jones: What are you talking about now? [01:26]

Mr Stone: [Balaclava (black) - €9.99 - Click here to purchase from clavarama.com] [01:27]

Mr Stone: [Revolver (Non-firing Replica) - €85.50 - Click here to purchase from stick-em-up.com] [01:28]

Jane Jones: This is fake news. I demand to know where my son is right now! [01:29]

Mr Stone: I’m hearing that one of the students saw him, along with a few of the other boys, heading to this place a few minutes ago: [Meat And Me – Hosts of 24 Hour Competitive Eating Challenges (1.7/5 Stars)] The students are telling us that the establishment only accepts cash, which I understand your son did not have with him. ‘Didn’t’ being the operative word. See earlier links

Jane Jones: These are lies! Am I supposed to believe that my son has become a model criminal – and is no longer a vegetarian? I don’t believe any of it! [01:29]

I enjoyed this and I could just see the characters so clearly through their funny, exasperated emails. Fun take on the prompt.

There were so many fun lines in this! Jane Jones going completely berserk after just eight minutes of “virtual tumbleweeds” was hilarious. I’ve definitely seen her personality before... there’s always one lurking in these parent groups! And Mr. Stone casually dropping ' Me and Mrs. Jones ' lyrics into the conversation while she gets increasingly furious had me laughing!! :).

I loved the escalation from an anxious mother asking where her son is to discovering that he may have bought a balaclava, a replica revolver, and then headed off to a competitive meat-eating challenge. The increasingly deadpan absurdity works really well — especially because Mr Stone never loses that infuriatingly polite teacher voice.

Thanks so much for your feedback Marjolein. 'Deadpan absurdity' is such an eloquent way to describe this. That was what I was going for, so I'm glad it came across. Thanks again for taking time to comment, it means a lot
