The Crime Of The Midnight Fuel

Crime

Written in response to: "Write a story about a character who spends all night in a 24/7 gas station or laundromat." as part of Liminal Spaces with Shaelin Bishop.

Yesterday was a night I will never forget. It was a crisp, deceptively quiet evening when I arrived at the gas station, ready to pull yet another grueling late-night shift. The neon sign buzzed overhead, casting a flickering, artificial glow onto the empty asphalt of the forecourt. Working the graveyard shift usually meant long stretches of absolute boredom, occasionally broken by a weary truck driver or a local looking for a midnight snack. I parked my car, walked past the glass doors, and began settling in, completely unaware of the chaos that the next few hours would bring.

As the clock crept closer to midnight, the world outside seemed to completely shut down. The distant hum of the highway faded into a dull murmur, leaving the store enveloped in a heavy, almost suffocating silence. I was in the middle of restocking the beverage cooler when I heard it for the first time—a faint, indistinct sound that broke the quiet atmosphere. I paused, holding a cold can of soda in my hand, and listened intently. It sounded like whispers. The hushed tones were muffled, appearing to come from just outside the main entrance.

Naturally, I assumed a customer was about to walk in. I set the soda down, walked back behind the counter, and put on my standard customer service smile. I waited. And I waited. The automatic glass sliding doors remained stubbornly shut, their sensors completely undisturbed. Nobody came in. I peered through the glass windows, squinting against the harsh interior lights to see past the reflection, but the pumps were entirely deserted. I shook my head, laughing it off as a trick of the mind. I knew for sure that this was going to be a lonely night, the kind where every tiny creak of the building echoes like a gunshot.

Just as I turned back to my duties, hoping to lose myself in the monotony of inventory tracking, I heard another noise. This wasn't the soft, ambiguous whispering from before. This was distinct, aggressive, and undeniably close. It sounded like people arguing. The voices were sharp, raised in a heated but restrained conflict, emanating from the blind spot right around the side of the building near the storage sheds.

Driven by a mix of apprehension and a sense of responsibility, I decided I couldn't just ignore it. I went outside to check it out. The cold night air hit my face as I stepped out from beneath the canopy. I walked cautiously toward the side of the building, my heart pounding a little faster against my ribs. But when I turned the corner and scanned the dimly lit alleyway, my breath caught in my throat. There was nobody there. The alley was completely empty, save for the overflowing dumpster and a few scattered cardboard boxes catching the wind.

A cold shiver that had nothing to do with the weather ran down my spine. The absolute stillness of the scene made the previous voices feel incredibly surreal. I stood there for a moment, looking around the dark corners of the property, trying to rationalize what I had just experienced. I knew something was up, and I had to figure it out. The instinct to call for help flashed through my mind, but I hesitated. I couldn't just call the police immediately because I would probably get in trouble if the police did not find anything. The local precinct didn't take kindly to false alarms from paranoid store clerks, and the fear of being reprimanded or labeled a nuisance kept my phone in my pocket. Deciding that I was letting my imagination get the best of me, I turned on my heel and walked back toward the main entrance.

That was when the real nightmare began. I grabbed the handle and tried opening the door, but it was locked. My heart dropped. The door had been unlocked just thirty seconds ago when I walked out, and the automatic locking mechanism was turned off during store hours. I pulled hard, but the metal frame didn’t budge. Now I know for sure that there is someone here. The realization that I was locked out of my own station sent a wave of adrenaline surging through my veins.

Before I could even process my next move, movement caught my eye through the glass. In the shadows of the dimly lit interior, I saw a silhouette shifting behind the checkout counter. Then I see a shadow—a large, imposing figure moving with terrifying speed. The person is coming toward me. I stood frozen on the pavement, my boots glued to the ground as the figure approached the glass door from the inside. With a sharp click, the person unlocks the door, the metal latch echoing in the night air. Before I could even think to turn and run into the darkness of the parking lot, the door flew open, and a heavy, calloused hand clamped tightly onto my jacket. The man violently yanks me in, pulling me off my feet and dragging me across the threshold into the stark glare of the fluorescent lights.

The sheer terror of the moment paralyzed me. I was shivering uncontrollably, my muscles shaking so fiercely that I could barely stand on my own two feet. The man didn't say a word at first; his grip was ironclad as he forced me backward into the store's small office area. He put me in a chair, shoving me down hard enough to knock the wind out of my lungs.

From my forced vantage point, the true scale of the intrusion became devastatingly clear. I spotted three other men inside the store, and they were systematically tearing the place apart. They were ruining shelves, sweeping rows of merchandise onto the floor with reckless abandon, shattering glass jars and crushing boxes under their heavy boots. They were opening bags of inventory, ripping through shipping boxes that had arrived just that afternoon, and pouring stuff all over the floor in a frantic, destructive search for safes, cash, or valuables. Cigarettes, lottery tickets, and fractured plastic displays littered the ground like a war zone.

The man who had dragged me inside—the guy that saw me first—didn't let me watch the destruction for long. He pulled a thick piece of cloth from his pocket, aggressively wrapping it around my mouth to gag me, cutting off my ability to scream for help. He then grabbed a thick length of utility rope from a nearby shelf, binding my arms tightly to the armrests and securing my legs to the heavy metal frame of the chair. He pulled the knots painfully tight, ensuring I was completely immobilized before turning his back on me to rejoin the others in their chaotic plunder.

As the thieves focused entirely on destroying the front counter and ripping the cash registers from their mounts, the initial shock began to recede, replaced by a desperate urge to survive. I tried to move my arms, but the rope dug into my skin. However, as I twisted my wrists in a frantic, subtle motion, I realized that I can still move my hand a little bit. The pocket of my uniform jacket was loose, and the fabric had bunched up right against my right hip.

With agonizing slowness, keeping my eyes locked on the backs of the intruders, I shifted my fingers downward. I reached into my pocket and grabbed my phone. My heart was hammering so loudly I was certain they would hear it over the sound of breaking glass. Relying entirely on muscle memory, keeping the screen concealed beneath the shadow of the office desk, I managed to dial 911.

When the line connected, I knew I couldn't speak freely due to the gag and the proximity of the criminals. I took a deep, jagged breath through my nose and muffledly managed to say the address, articulating the numbers and the street name as clearly as humanly possible through the cloth, and desperately told them that there is a robbery in progress. Knowing that every additional second the screen stayed lit increased my chances of being caught, I quickly closed my phone and slid it back into my pocket, praying that the dispatcher had captured the location.

What followed was the longest, most excruciating period of suspense in my life. Every tick of the wall clock felt like an eternity. I watched the men continue their thoughtless destruction, terrified that they would look over, notice my movement, or find the phone.

Exactly 8 minutes later, the police arrived. The response was silent and flawless; there were no blaring sirens or flashing emergency lights to tip off the criminals. The officers had strategically approached the building in the dark. Suddenly, the heavy metal door at the back of the storage room burst open. The police quietly went through the back door, moving with tactical precision. Before the robbers even had a chance to react or reach for whatever weapons they carried, the officers flooded the main floor, weapons drawn, shouting authoritative commands that immediately shattered the thieves' confidence. The men threw their hands in the air, realizing they were completely trapped. The officers swiftly subdued them, threw them to the ground, and arrested the whole gang in a matter of minutes.

An officer immediately rushed over to the office, cutting my bonds and pulling the gag from my mouth. I collapsed forward, gasping for air, the adrenaline finally leaving my system and leaving me completely exhausted.

Looking around the property as the sun began to hint at the horizon, the damage was extensive. The gas station needs a bit of work to clean up the shattered glass, ruined shelving, and trampled merchandise, but at least nothing got stolen. The swift police intervention ensured that the store's assets and the night's earnings remained exactly where they belonged.

Without a doubt, that was the most terrifying night I have ever witnessed. The feeling of absolute helplessness while bound to that chair is something that will haunt my dreams for a very long time. Now that the dust has settled and the police reports have been filed, I know I cannot continue living like this. I’m also going to try to ask my boss to give me a shift in the busy hours because I don’t want to experience this again. The quiet of the midnight shift used to be peaceful, but now I know exactly what kind of monsters lurk in the dark when nobody is watching.
