Sam Clark

Sam Clark – Designer

I'm an award-winning book designer. My style is elegant and contemporary. I specialise in the arts, fashion, history and travel.

Overview

I have over 20 years of experience designing interiors and covers for self-publishing authors and international publishers such as Thames & Hudson, The British Library, Bloomsbury and Tuttle. I've worked with many authors, artists and photographers, and designed best-selling books like Graffiti World and Bespoke: Savile Row Tailors. I have also designed successful text-lead books like Heaven on Earth, Ancient Ivory and The Sartorial Travel Guide.

I take great care in selecting the right images that illustrate the text - no matter how long or short it is - designing spreads that communicate a clear narrative to the reader. With my typographical and picture editing skills, I design fresh, eye-catching covers and interiors from concept to press. I start every project by researching the subject and talk it through with you. Then I make sample spreads before designing the full layout and creating final files ready for print or e-book.

Every new project brings new ideas. I look forward to hearing yours!

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2014 — Present
Working as a freelancer, I have built long-term relationships, designing books and covers for publishers in London, New York and Singapore. I regularly work on books with publishers Thames and Hudson, Bloomsbury, The British Library and Tuttle. I have also worked with many authors helping them self-publish their books. Like the renowned menswear author Simon Crompton's Permanent Style books. I'm fortunate to work on subjects I love and find interesting. These subjects cover art and design: for example, the Material Innovation series. Travel with books like Great Cycling Climbs and The Sartorial Travel Guide. Cooking - Urban Cookbook. History - Ancient Ivory. Architecture - SAOTA Light Space Life

Revolution Press

Jan, 2012 — Jan, 2014 (about 2 years)
I spent two years in Singapore as the art director for international, world-leading luxury lifestyle and watch magazines, The Rake and Revolution. • Managing the design and production from initial planning to the final print and digital publication. • Running photoshoots with photographers, stylists and models. • Understanding US, Asian and European markets.

Thames and Hudson

Jan, 1998 — Jan, 2012 (about 14 years)
At the publishers Thames and Hudson I designed books and covers for a wide variety of subjects ranging from art and fashion, including Make Your Mark: New Urban Artists, to archaeology and history titles like Great Military Leaders.

Unfortunately, Sam broke his thumb during our project which greatly impacted his ability to meet the original deadline. This overshadowed the quality of his work.
