Nicola Robinson

Nicola Robinson – Editor

A seasoned developmental editor of narrative. I help shape your novel, be it crime, historical, or high-end literary.

Overview

I am a former editor from HarperCollins Australia, where I worked with bestselling and award-winning authors. Like most Australian in-house editors I'm a generalist and have edited a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, but crime, historicals and literary fiction (and combinations thereof) are my happy place.

I will bring a sharp and caring eye to your manuscript, by which I mean that I will push you hard but do so with respect for you and your deep investment in your story. I once advised the first-time author of a promising but unwieldy sci-fi ms to cut her first three chapters and ditch two characters. We worked through the pain together, and she's now the internationally published author of five novels. Another multi-published, award-winning author tells me, 'You taught me everything I know.'

I read widely, which means I bring marketplace context to my editing work. I make frequent deep dives into crime or historicals. (It is likely that I am the only person in this country who is a member of both Sisters in Crime and the Jane Austen Society.)
