Nicole Maus

Nicole Maus – Editor

Former Big 5 editor with 10+ years of experience in fantasy, romance, horror, and any combination therein. Let's get cooking!

Overview

I am a savvy, efficient editor here to help you perfect your work. With an MFA and 10+ years of experience in indie, big 5, and self-pub spaces, I have deep knowledge of both the craft and the market. At Del Ray (PRH), I brought a passion for genre fiction and the semicolon; its unwieldy reputation is undeserved.

My favorite genres are SFF, Romance, Horror, and any combination therein. I have worked on a broad range from Epic Fantasy Romance to grungy Horror, aligning the potential reader to the author's vision. Writing is an art. And in being an art, interpretation is necessary. It's an editor's job to make sure the intention of the author comes through with clarity to the reader.

My work as an editor is timely, direct, and always respectful. Writing is difficult but joyful work, and editors should seek to be judicious with their critique. I am here to help you achieve the book you set out to write and hopefully fan that creative spark to write another ten! I have worked with long time authors and debuts, and the consistent takeaway is everyone needs a little encouragement now and then.

This is a collaboration. You are at all times free to ignore edits. Sometimes, they only function to spur on an even better idea from the author! At the end of the day, this is your work, and you have to proudly put your name on it.

I have worked in both the self-pub and trad-pub spaces; there are differences in what is expected in them. If you would like a more strategic-minded consultation, I will happily keep in mind where you plan on taking your novel. I have helped many authors write their query package and land agents, but self-pub has its own advantages of which I am fully aware.

"I had only ever worked with editors that were there to clean up your work, but Nicole turned my book from some raw clay to an astonishing story that I still marvel at. She was instrumental to the success of Hollow's Row, and I am so happy I got the chance to work with her!" - Trisha Wolfe, author of USA Today bestselling dark academia romances and psychological thrillers.

"Nicole was a dream to work with. She gave thorough and actionable advise that not only improved this book, but made me a stronger writer. I learned more from her than my creative writing courses! I can't wait to work with her again." - S.M. Gaither, author of bestselling romantasy.

I loved working with Nicole! All of her suggested edits were exactly the kind of feedback I needed. Her ability to show me how to improve my work in the literary sense and even gave me some suggestions for my sequel.

My gosh, where do I even begin? Nicole was an absolute pleasure to work with and TRULY invaluable in perfecting my query letter. Even though this is my second time querying a novel, I still struggle with crafting a letter that feels both enticing to agents and aligned with what they’re looking fo...

Nicole is amazing at what she does. Before beginning the edit, she asks questions up front to get a sense of your thematic intent. From there, she curates her recommendations to refine your intended message. The result is a super sharp edit with thoughtful chapter by chapter feedback, always fram...
