Mohamad Al-Hakim

Mohamad Al-Hakim – Editor

Ph.D level expertise with over 12 years of developmental, editing, and proofreading consulting experience.

Overview

I have over 10 years of developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading experience. I love working on all types of manuscripts and meeting new authors. I work closely with clients to make sure we communicate all needs and stay on top of deadlines!

I hold a Ph.D. in Philosophy (York University) with specialization in political, legal, and ethical theory. I was born in Egypt but mostly grew up in Canada. After completing my graduate studies in 2012, I took up an assistant professor position in the United States. So, I am as diverse as my academic background and work experience!

During my career, I taught courses on ethics, creative writing, film, human rights, ethics, Islamic philosophy, logic, political theory, sports, and law. I have edited and proofread countless manuscripts. In addition to working in academia, I am also a freelance editor and have worked on novels, portfolios, autobiographies, and organizational models. Together, I have extensive professional and personal experience working with all types of clients including CEOs, lawyers, academics, authors, recent graduates, and senior executives. As a result, I understand and value the unique needs of each project and its author.

I love to work closely with every author to make sure we communicate throughout the process, discussing milestones, revisions, and other needs. My preferred method has always been Microsoft Track Changes so authors can see every change made as well as get pinpointed constructive comments and feedback. But I welcome Google Docs, Reedsy-provided tools, and other suggestions. By the end, I ensure all comments have been addressed and the manuscript goes through one last proofread to make sure everything is ready to go!

Mo is such a pleasure to work with. He is highly communicative, receptive, and fully willing to work with you and your needs—in my case, he accommodated a somewhat unusual schedule and process. With his edits and proofing, he is thorough and knowledgable, with clear insights not only on the broad strokes of a project but also on the more nuanced details and topics—particularly philosophy.

Working with Mohamad was such a pleasure. He really valued what I thought and put in the effort to understand where I was coming from with my ideas. After explaining what outcomes I was looking for, he worked very diligently to to bring what I had envisioned to life. Using his services was the best decision I have ever made. The feedback I have received since the re-edit's has been phenomenal. ...

Mo was a gem to work with! I had a technical handbook (legal) and he helped me format, structure, and edit it in a way that was easy to read. Incredibly responsive, thoughtful, and fun to work with. I would highly recommend him for your editing needs. Will definitely keep him in mind for future collaborations.

Mo is an excellent editor. He's very thorough and diligent and offers keen insights, especially if you are working on any areas related to Philosophy. I would hire him again for a similar project!
