Joseph Waxman

Joseph Waxman – Ghostwriter

Ghostwriter for bestselling authors, leaders, and thinkers, including Pema Chödrön, turning complex material into clear nonfiction.

Overview

I’m a ghostwriter and collaborative writer whose work includes two Pema Chödrön books that have each sold more than 100,000 copies across formats. I have collaborated on six books for Shambhala Publications by Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche and Pema Chödrön .

I help authors, teachers, clinicians, leaders, and public thinkers turn complex source material into clear nonfiction books: talks, teachings, interviews, notes, drafts, research, professional experience, and years of reflection.

My work is often most useful when the material is rich but the book is not yet clear. I help find the real subject, shape the structure, preserve the author’s voice, and turn scattered or overwhelming material into a coherent manuscript.

My background is strongest in Buddhist and spiritual nonfiction, with related work in psychology, memoir, personal transformation, leadership, and social-impact storytelling.

I work best with thoughtful authors who want a genuine collaborator — someone who can help them think, structure, clarify, and write — not simply someone to “write it up.”

For early-stage projects, I often begin with a few conversations and a close look at the available material, followed by a short memo on the book’s strongest direction, likely audience, and best next step.

Ghostwriter and collaborative writer for spiritual, psychological, memoir/personal-growth, business, and specialized nonfiction. Selected work includes six books for Shambhala Publications by Pema Chödrön and Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, including “Welcoming the Unwelcome,” “How We Live Is How We Die,” and “Another Kind of Freedom.” “Welcoming the Unwelcome” has sold more than 140,000 copies across formats, and “How We Live Is How We Die” has sold more than 100,000. Other projects include "Most of Us Recover," a book with novelist Joanne Greenberg ("I Never Promised You a Rose Garden") and her co-authors on extreme mental states; a current book project with a physician on love, emotional healing, and human flourishing; a memoir/personal-growth project with a biotech CFO; and storytelling/social-impact projects with Murray Nossel, clinical psychologist and co-founder of Narativ. Much of my work involves helping authors turn talks, teachings, interviews, notes, drafts, and complex source material into clear, coherent nonfiction books.
