John Taranto

John Taranto – Editor

A detail-oriented editor specializing in outdoor recreation pursuits, including hunting, fishing, camping and wilderness survival.

Overview

I spent the first 15 years of my career at Outdoor Life, one of America's premier hunting-and-fishing magazines, where I worked my way up the masthead from Editorial Assistant to Executive Editor. While at Outdoor Life, I edited three publication-branded books on survival. Since then, I've edited two additional books on the "redneck" lifestyle and knives. I left Outdoor Life in 2015 and joined an advertising agency, where I served in a variety of roles, including copywriter/producer and public relations manager. In early 2020, I re-entered the editorial world as Editor of Game & Fish magazine.

TESTIMONIALS
"I’ve worked with John on my last two books in the best-selling Field & Stream Total Outdoorsman series, and he is a life-saver. Meticulous, detailed, and super-organized, he nonetheless projects a friendly, I’m-your-partner vibe that kept me on schedule, on deadline, and on track. And there’s no question at all that my work turned out better—and better-received—because of John’s approach and abilities." —T. Edward Nickens, co-author of The Total Redneck Manual, author of The Total Knife Manual

"I’ve had the pleasure of working with many editors over the past decade, but John has helped me create the highest level of content. Any editor can act like the punctuation police by fixing bad grammar and cleaning up an author’s mistakes, but John is a writer's editor. He can read between our lines and help us say the things we are actually trying say. John is the kind of professional who can help us turn bland facts and figures into moving and memorable speech. John can make sure we are communicating our wisdom and telling our stories in the most digestible way. Anyone can be a writer if they type enough words, but it takes a real communicator to assemble those words into meaningful language. That’s what editors do, and John can do this with the best of them." —Tim MacWelch, New York Times Bestselling author and nationally recognized survival expert

John is awesome. He is so talented at what he does. He made my book so much better. This was a great investment into the overall quality of everything that I wrote. He is incredibly talented and a pleasure to work with. I know when I write my second book he will be first person I ask to edit and proof read my writing. I would recommend him to anyone. Throughout the process John was timely, h...
