Weekly Contest #372
I shivered and awoke with a start. The room was dark except for a single pale white hand reaching out towards me. My mouth was dry and I felt terrified, but the hand only cupped my face and then withdrew. The hand was attached to a beautiful woman in white with platinum blonde hair and silver eyes who looked down at me with an indiscernible expression and then took a few steps back, gesturing for me to follow. “Who? Who are you?” I asked. A light clicked on to my left. “What’s going on?” Mai asked rubbing her eyes. “There’s someone,” I g...
Weekly Contest #371
I stretched out my arms and squeezed my body and head through the aperture to Zylaxxic mode. I always started the night in Zylaxxic. It painted the fuel depot in a cool blue wash of gel-like atmosphere that I found relaxing and could swim freely through. It reminded me of home. My pale blue contented pallor rapidly ran red with irritation as soon as I was confronted by the mess that Coquelicot had left for me before clocking out. I sighed and got to work, she was always running off without doing even a minimal amount of cleaning, but I neve...
Weekly Contest #370
I always hated dirt. Me mouth tasted like grit porridge mixed with iron. The dirt squished in between me toes, the dirt was caked inside me ears, and a sweaty dirt soup was running down me back. Me back ached something awful besides, and me right toe hurt like the devil ever since I stubbed it on Mister Rogers. It must’ve been approachin’ morning, but it seemed to be getting colder not warmer. I stamped my feet to try to warm up and looked up from the flickering lamplight and, for the first time, I started to see the vague outline the surro...
Weekly Contest #369
Content Warning: Animal sickness and death. I held a small dusty box in both hands. It was green and red with shapes evocative of Christmas. It was small enough that I could almost wrap my hands around it completely. The six sides bore six words scrawled in an uneven hand: Taquito. Hopper. Diamond. Midnight. Pot Roast. Bean Dip. They were mostly foods. Was it a recipe box? But there were no recipes inside. There was nothing inside. I ran down the attic stairs and into the living room. “Daddy, daddy. What’s this?” I asked holding out the...
Weekly Contest #368
MAD WOMEN ONLY The card was sitting on the sidewalk just outside Shirley’s house. The holographic business card seemed to warp so that the text was always completely visible no matter which way she turned it. Shirley looked up from the card, but she was the only person on the street. She shrugged and stowed the strange card in her suit pocket. She clicked open her small gold pocket watch which showed that she had six minutes left before her bus arrived (assuming it was on time today). Shirley sipped her coffee and walked purposefully towards...
Weekly Contest #367
Everything is perfect. T-minus one hour to showtime. “Yeah I’m headed out the door right now,” I reassure Brittiny on the phone. “Will you relax it’s going to be perfect.” “Love you too,” I hang up the phone and stop briefly on my way out the door to glance at my own reflection. The curls of my moustache are perfectly symmetrical, the knot on my tie is flawless, even my teeth seem whiter than normal. I grin at myself in the mirror and wiggle my eyebrows. That’s when I notice it, there’s a single moustache hair sticking straight up. I can fee...
Weekly Contest #366
Kyriakos Kyriakos was trying to focus on carving veins into the smooth dark stone, when a jab from Otto forced him to lift his head. “What is it?” “Oh nothing dominus. I just thought you might want to take a look over there.” Antonia stepped into the shop escorted by an elder brother. She wore a simple tunica which only served to enhance the refinement of her features and the shine of her honey gold hair by contrast. Kyriakos sighed as he watched her pick up an inkstone in one delicate hand, set it down, and then pick up another. “Well, don’...
Weekly Contest #365
I laugh aloud. I feel great. Giddy even. My stress evaporates and I experience an overwhelming sense of comfort for the first time in a long time, courtesy of the reassuring weight in my right hand. I I sit in my easy chair next to the bookshelf laid out with all my favorite novels. I had aspired to be an author once, but I never did write a damn thing that was true. It had to do with office work and the whitewashing corporate lingo that became my life. Those stuffed proboscises sucked the yolk straight out my words, and using those l...
