Weekly Contest #374
Lee entered the cathedral and deliberately took a seat in the aisle towards the back of the building near the door. His plan had been to slip in and out of the cathedral before the funeral began and then shortly before it ended, so he could be present at the service, but also be able to avoid having to speak to anyone. Lee had practiced law successfully for many years so he was an old hand at planning and strategizing his way through every situation he had to navigate in his high-pressured life. The plans, schemes and strategies that Lee dev...
Weekly Contest #320
It took them an hour to trek through the forest undergrowth before they reached the clearing where they now found themselves. The going had been hard but they finally made it. Inspector Anson was relieved that they got to where Teegee had said they needed to get to, but even now it occurred to him that he still did not know what this trip was about and why they had to walk to this clearing in the first place. If Anson had been with anyone other than Teegee the two of them would not be where they presently stood with this degree of uncertaint...
Weekly Contest #278
There is a smell Leon associated with the dying. He had grown to recognize it from all the terminally ill clients he had had to visit over the years. In hospitals, hospices and in private homes and bedrooms of clients too ill to come to his office. He had been in the bedrooms of many people ‘living’ through their final days and hours, but none of the rooms that he’d been to compare with the opulent bed chamber of the famous billionaire, Richard Lyons. The bedroom reminded Leon of a miniaturized version of the rooms found in the palace of Ver...
To the likes of Willie Watts there was only one question; whether you were somebody who was ‘in’ or ‘out’. By which Willie would mean to say either you were in a gang or you were outside of a gang. To anyone living where Willie was, this difference was crucial. Willie was a sixteen-year-old who existed in an urban hellhole named, “the Projects.” For Willie who only ever knew this world, it was clear he had to be in a gang to survive. As he once said to his friend Joe in a conversation about joining a local gang, “it’s not the only way of liv...
Weekly Contest #276
Lee looked at his watch before stepping into the airport's arrivals hall. It was midday exactly, and he noticed that the flight from Loas had just landed. Hence, the hall was full of travellers clearing passport control. ‘Good,’ Lee said to himself, ‘time to check whether the officers on the morning shift and on duty were on the ball and processing the incoming tourists efficiently. Lee was scanning the hall full of incoming passengers and wondering if he needed to go into the staff room to get more of his people into arrivals to help with t...
Weekly Contest #252
It was midday at the gladiator training camp and all the slaves were lining up to get their food. When the gong sounded to let everyone know lunch was ready a small bald slave was first in line. His name was Catabar, and he was clothed in a disgusting and smelly smock which was covered in animal filth. Catabar had spent the morning cleaning out the pig pens and stables and so even the other slaves kept their distance from him as they lined up for their food. This suited Catabar as he had been at work since before dawn and was hungry to the p...
