Weekly Contest #374
I race back into the school toward my locker, which is easier said than done with a steady stream of students heading the opposite direction toward freedom. If I don’t bring home the sweater I borrowed from Mom last week she might snap. How was I supposed to know that it was her favorite one? She has, like, a hundred. I round the corner and see Brett Andrews at the far end of the hall slipping something through one of the slits at the top of a locker. Wait, is that my locker? I instinctively duck out of view before he notices me. A few very ...
Weekly Contest #373
CW: Pet loss “Daddy, what does that say?” A young girl peeked with one eye from behind her father’s leg and pointed a chubby finger at the sign behind me. Her father ruffled her golden curls and answered with a chuckle, “Warning: Unattended children will be given espresso and a free puppy.” Her eyes lit up and she clasped her hands together. “Am I un-tended, Daddy?” “Sorry, peanut, but no. You’re attended to.” Her lip protruded into an adorable pout before he continued expertly. “And anyway, we have Luna and Bella at home. Do you want a cak...

CW: Disordered eating, calorie restriction Monica hits end on her watch at the exact moment it changes from 3.49 to 3.5 miles and scrolls down her workout summary, still standing at the end of the driveway. Duration: 59:09 Energy burned: 264 calories Distance: 3.5 miles Steps: 8,249 Average pace: 16:54. Her best this week! Average heart rate: 106bpm Tomorrow, she thinks, it is time to upgrade from the 12-lb vest to 15 lbs! When she unlocks the front door it is 9:42 a.m. — and her older two kids aren't downstairs yet. She breathes in throug...
Weekly Contest #368
Sonia smiles warmly as a young couple pulls into the lot beside her black SUV. The man gets out and offers a smile in return as he straightens his button-up shirt and pats his pockets. The passenger door opens and he rushes around the vehicle to help his wife out. She smiles up at him, one hand in his and one on her burgeoning stomach. The car door swings shut and they shuffle forward. Sonia moves to meet them, closing the gap with a hand extended. The man surreptitiously wipes his palms on his jeans before extending his own. “Matt. Matt Rey...
Weekly Contest #367
Vivienne The boutonnière slips through my unfeeling fingertips. Breathe, I remind myself. Michael’s familiar honey-brown eyes widen and lose their heavy-lidded softness as he focuses them on me. The woman on her knees at his feet rises, her back still turned. She pulls the silky blue straps of her gown up and into place. I recognize the gown. I bought it after all. Even knowing it’s her, I inhale sharply when my sister turns and faces me. She flicks her tongue across her swollen lips. She positions herself in front of the worn leather armch...
Weekly Contest #366
“Susie, your ice cream,” he warns. “Oh, Fudge!” She tilts her head and licks the rivulet escaping the cone. He chuckles, rolling his eyes heavenward. She swirls her tongue around the edges to prevent further spillage. Tenderly, he wipes away a little chocolate smudge beside the curve of her upturned mouth with his thumb and licks it clean. His eyes never leave hers. “You better wipe that look off your face, mister, or I’ll become a puddle at your feet,” she says, “and this ice cream will melt right along with me. Think of the mess!” “Well no...
Kevin I take my role in life seriously. You’ve heard how everyone fits into one of three categories: a sheep, a wolf, or a sheepdog? Well, I’m proud to be a sheepdog. I will fiercely protect those that I consider to be a part of my flock. When everyone is settled safely at home for the night, doors and windows locked, outdoor lights and security cameras on… that’s when I can rest. Lightly. Any sound or disturbance, and I’m instantly awake, ready to defend. Sure, sometimes I let my guard down for a few moments as long as I’ve taken measures ...
Weekly Contest #365
My intestines were tying themselves into an intricate knot as I waited for the small cluster of students to dissipate around the cast list posted outside the theater room. A gap opened up and I slipped into it - or at least tried to. Instead, I bumped into Colin Atwater. Because of course I did. He and I had been in fierce competition since freshman year, vying for the highest test score, the best speech, or a teacher’s attention with hands raised high. Apparently today that competition extended to possession of the same yellowing tile in th...
