Weekly Contest #375
Beep. Beeeeeeeep. Beep. “Do you hear that?” Asher asked Sam as they sat on Asher’s floating dock, lines from their poles in the lagoon, beers in hand. “Hear what?” Sam asked. “Elena?” He turned back to the house and nodded. “I heard her say something about 'wine' and 'baking." “No, it’s…” Asher started to say. But then shook his head and said, “What is it called again?” A grin drew across Sam's face, and he said, “They call it the Lexum.” “Sounds like a fancy car,” Asher said. Sam, like Asher, worked for Inomen Tele-Teck. Sam worked in Syste...
Weekly Contest #369
Now that the acid rain had stopped, Sheltel braved the overcrowded streets and made her way to Arbum Station. She carried an overstuffed leather bag, with a white envelope poking out the top. The scent of roasted nuts, hot dogs, candied fruits, and squid on a stick rippled through the air, bringing with it a sense of comfort. The squid man called out to her, in his gruff smoker’s voice, “Hey, Sheltel! Morning squid?! Your favorite!” “Not today, Rylan," she said through a forced, hollow grin. "I have to hurry before the rain starts up again!”...

Memoir of a Retired Knight "The Witch of Harpy Mountain" Ink on parchment Draft 1 It started at the Dragon’s Roost Inn—a shitty name for a spot that hasn’t seen a dragon in a hundred years. I don’t blame them, either. No decent dragon would be caught dead near the place. The company lurking about there is not one I would keep if it weren’t the only inn for fifty miles. It's filled with the dregs: wayward wizards, out-of-work goblin merchants who always try to get you to buy into their pyramid scheme, and orcish cutthroats who always piss th...
Weekly Contest #361
“We’ve reached the end. All that remains is to place the battery. If it works, the Neuroforge will reset. We’ll get our lives back, and all the loss on this journey will have been worth it. Entry over.” Allane’s voice echoed off the sides of the ancient cave walls as she brushed them over with her dirty, tired hands. “Diary entry placed,” the short bot with three-lobed wheels let out, following behind her. “That's the last one until we get out of here,” she said. “If we get out of here. We’re close.” Her eyes narrowed into her NightVisor, wh...

May 3rd, 1877 Dear Mr. Crumpet, I am in receipt of your package, though I must admit I am quite surprised by its contents and am unclear about the reason for its sending. Of course, I do appreciate what you sent, as I know you well enough to understand that you are a thoughtful and intelligent person. Therefore, I request that, at your convenience, you provide a thorough explanation of exactly what I should be doing with it. I do not wish to appear insincere, or even foolish, but it is, well, how to put it—quite extraordinary. Please, sir, ...
Weekly Contest #353
The mud was thicker than molasses under my boots. I generally hate cliches, but it fits. It rained last night, and honestly, I despise feeding the fucking bull. He was always staring at me, always working something out. He was rarely aggressive; he just seemed like he was thinking more than any bull should be. An intelligence more of man than of bovine. I didn’t want the mud to be thick, in case today was the day he decided to chase me. If he wanted out of his barnyard, and he decided I was in his way, I couldn’t outrun him in this. My feet ...
Weekly Contest #347
“Here’s to our first million!” The words jump out of me, as I gaze across the table at the wonderful woman who has stuck with me for the last 20 years, waving a check in one hand and a glass of freshly-poured champagne in the other before clanking them together in a triumphant toast. Looking into her beautiful, emerald green eyes, she appears more radiant today than ever before. How could she not be? We’ve finally made it! After all these years, I’ve done something to make her proud. Who would have thought, out of all the songs I’ve ever wri...
