Weekly Contest #374
My name is Karl. I am a senior, and my life—along with the lives of others close to me—have been transformed in ways I can scarcely believe. I want to share my good fortune with the world, though I must keep certain details hidden. The names, the places, even the exact setting must remain secret. A tree in a park is central to what happened, and as a living thing, it is in my emotional feeling that the tree is demanding privacy, and I feel compelled to honor that. The Park About ten minutes’ walk from my home lies a public park. It is a pla...
Weekly Contest #361
The summer of 2026 was supposed to be golden. Ethan was eighteen, fresh out of school, and convinced that love was the one thing that could anchor him in the chaos of growing up. Lila had been his sweetheart since they were fifteen — her laughter stitched into his memories; she had guided him through exams and had seemed to treat him always like a family member. But one evening, beneath the fading light of the old oak tree, she ended it. “We’re not suited for each other,” she said, her voice steady, almost kind. “You’ll understand one day....
Weekly Contest #353
The sky hung heavy over Bangkok, a dome of rust and sorrow. The sun was no longer a sovereign flame but a pale coin pressed against the haze, its brilliance dimmed by centuries of smoke. Arun stood at the window, his silhouette etched against the trembling glass, watching the city dissolve into ash‑colored mist. Behind him, the air purifier hummed like a weary sentinel, its breath too shallow to guard against the wrath of gods long forgotten. Is this the end...or nearly the end? “Papa,” Niran coughed, his small chest rattling like a drum of...
Weekly Contest #347
Brackmere is a town that lives by the sea and the market. Its cobbled square bustles with fishmongers, bakers, and gossiping matrons, while gulls wheel overhead, shrieking like heralds of doom. Fog rolls in most evenings, wrapping the harbor in a shroud that make even the most ordinary lamppost look conspiratorial. It is the sort of place where stories cling to the stones, and one man is determined to uncover them all. Mr. Horace Pilbeam, age seventy‑two, sprightly despite his creaking knees, runs a one‑man detective agency called Sherlock ...
Weekly Contest #344
The Crew 2026, and humanity has decided to revisit the moon. But this time, the mission is not just about science — it is about style, inclusivity, and proving that history could sparkle. The crew of Apollo Fabulous is unlike any before: • Captain Neela Armchair, (who was born Jamal) with nerves of steel and wit sharp enough to cut through lunar rock. • Buzz Glitterbeam, an extrovert astronaut who treats every mission like a Broadway premiere. • Mike Oldbarrel, a grumpy veteran who had seen too many launches and too few happy hours. The Jou...
Weekly Contest #291
As he walked along the familiar street, Robert whistled a merry melody, the lowering light casting long shadows in front of him. He was looking forward to getting home to Martha after a busy day at his marketing company. Their second wedding anniversary was coming soon. And whilst they loved each other as strongly as ever, recently the intimacy part had waned somewhat. Anxieties hit him as he came to his detached property. The gate, which is normally locked, was ajar. He had a hazy recollection of locking it earlier that day. He shrugged an...
Weekly Contest #288
It is raining relentlessly, and every drop feels like a hammer hitting my brain. I am physically uncomfortable, but the icy terror that has taken up residence in my bones is much worse. A storm is raging. Standing outside the stark white Emergency Medical Center, I attempt to understand what is happening. Inside the hospital, my son Jacob is fighting a seemingly invisible enemy while linked up to equipment. Yet maybe we are both fighting the mystery of premonition? Accompanying him in Emergency is Sarah, my wife. She possesses strength and ...
Weekly Contest #286
At the age of 28, Massie Mandrake a trained and highly qualified astronaut is on the verge of accomplishing a goal that she has been working toward for a considerable amount of time. It is expected that she and her crew will begin a mission to travel to Mars within the next few days, which will be a huge milestone for humanity. As part of their reward to go to Mars each chosen astronaut can bring a limited number of personal items that are significant to them and serve as a physical connection to Earth. They are each given a small suitcase ...
Weekly Contest #285
The hum was a low thrum in my bones, a vibration that resonated with the very fabric of reality. I gripped the worn leather of the temporal displacement device, a contraption I'd cobbled together from schematics found buried deep in my grandfather's attic. Tonight was the night. Tonight, I’d finally fix the biggest mistake of my life. 25 years ago, I'd let her go, and the ghost of that decision had haunted me ever since. There was hardly a day that went by that I did not consider my decision and regret it. The numbers on the device flicker...
Weekly Contest #274
From the moment I first encountered my niece Mary, I knew she was a special girl. Whilst now a teenager we have become close not only as relatives but as friends too. She usually phones or messages me at regular intervals. And she is the only child of my brother Peter and his wife Gill. They all live a short distance from me in West London, though because of all our work commitments we are prevented meeting that often. Yet just a short while ago I got a very distressing phone call on my mobile. "Hey Uncle Bob....your got to help me! Please!"...
Weekly Contest #267
It was impossible for Tom to hide his happiness. He would meet his date Sophie in just a few hours. Their initial point of contact was an introduction on the brand-new website "Secrets and Excitement." It was unique among dating apps in that it only paired users when one or both had secrets that could influence the course of their relationship. The website promised it would not share the secret with anybody else, and it was kept in total confidence. They paired the secret keeper with someone who would probably be cool with hearing the secr...
Weekly Contest #252
Last night, I hardly got any sleep. It was earlier that day that I became aware that I was being observed as I was working out at my neighborhood gym club. Not watching me in a blatant manner. But in order to keep an eye on me, they are employing secretive tactics. A few fleeting glances in the wall mirrors looking at me. Sly looks at me when they believe I am unaware of what is happening. Yet they seem under the impression that I do not know of their surveillance about them checking my whereabouts. Haha, ha-ha, I am not someone who is fooli...
Weekly Contest #238
A tall and towering distinguished-looking man with hypnotic eyes stood on the stage of the Great Hall. He titled himself the Professor and his close colleagues often referred to him as 'The Prof'. It is after 3am in the morning but due to the urgency of events he has summoned his three closest assistants to learn about how he would soon reveal to all in this auditorium and to the world about a dreadful incident. "My friends," he said, pausing to stress that the group's diverse political affiliations didn't matter because they were all now ...
Weekly Contest #225
My apparel is sticking to my body as the sweat envelops me. Its late evening in the nightclub area of Bangkok as I say bye to the last of my work colleagues who had joined me for some drinks in the Silom area pub which I often go after work. I have decided to walk back to my apartment which is barely ten minutes away. Maybe the events of the last few hours will become less scary to me once I have ceased the alcohol intake. I go to the pub washroom and look in the mirror. My good-looking physique is overshadowed by signs of despair on my face...
Aston Delaware Galbraith is a student at a prominent British university, where he currently studies Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He has the appearance of a young adult, a nonbinary slender body type, and the intelligence of an Einstein. He has dedicated the vast majority of his waking life to learning about several different fields of study. From Algebra to Zoology, and everything in between. He is currently seated at a study table on the top level of his university library. The towering spires and Gothic arches of this massive s...
