Weekly Contest #367
When I spotted my little brother sitting at a back table in the coffee shop, my heart began to race so quickly I had to grab on to a chair to steady myself. I hadn’t seen Jacob in twenty-five years; that’s how long he’d been dead. Now, there he was, drinking a cup of coffee and typing on his computer as if he didn’t have a care in the world. He was completely oblivious to the fact that he only had thirty minutes left to live. As I approached his table the lump in my throat ballooned to the size of a ping pong ball and I was afraid I wouldn’t...
Weekly Contest #293
The twenty passengers aboard the Temporal Express had nothing in common save for the fact that they were traveling back in time to the same day. Their destination was December 26, 2017, and their twelve-hour journey would leave them off at Grand Central Station, a busy transport hub in New York City. Upon disembarkation, their trackers would be set automatically, and they would have exactly four hours to complete their business. When it was Brynn’s turn to step into the train, a travel inspector activated her tracker and reminded her of all ...
Weekly Contest #156
It was just supposed to be a joke. Well, I guess the joke’s on me because I am the one sitting in a jail cell waiting to be picked up for my arraignment. They’re keeping me in a holding cell, so it’s private, but the toilet is right out in the open and guards keep walking back and forth. I have a shy bladder and can’t pee if people are watching. I wonder if anyone has ever died from a burst bladder. I really want to google it, but they took my phone. I’ve been charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter and libel against a major co...
Weekly Contest #118
My name is Sarah, and this is the story of how I died. It is the tale of a sixty-five year old grandmother, a former beauty queen, who made a radical decision to transform herself without considering any of the consequences. Please don’t judge me. My story begins the first Tuesday of October, at approximately 6 A.M., when I was jolted awake by a searing pain in my back along with lightning bolts shooting up and down my legs. After my car accident six years earlier, eight of the discs in my spine had collapsed and the pain was agonizing. M...
Weekly Contest #75
Angela zipped up her wedding dress, cringing as she looked in the full length mirror. This was not how she had imagined her wedding day would be. She closed her eyes and thought back to when she was a young girl dreaming of her perfect wedding. She could still picture it now. She would walk down the aisle on her father’s arm, her friends and family throwing kisses and beaming at her. Her tall, handsome groom would be waiting for her, tears streaming down his face, joyous and overwhelmed with her beauty. The whistling of the tea kettle start...
Weekly Contest #55
Rachel burst through the door and tossed her bulging bags of dirty laundry on the living room floor yelling, “Becky, I’m home. Come down and help me carry my stuff upstairs, you lazy bum.” Rachel was happy to be home for spring break, but also quite a bit nervous. She had a big secret, and she felt as if the weight of that secret had been burning a hole in her insides like hot lava. She would try her hardest to act normal for Becky even though she felt as if her brain was in danger of exploding. As soon as Becky heard Rachel’s voice, her fa...
Weekly Contest #41
A Most Beloved Pet By Peggy Gerber Rosie was jolted awake by a thud in her backyard just as the sun was blooming on the horizon. As she raced outside her rickety farmhouse to investigate, her heart began to beat like a jackhammer: there in front of her was an enormous, glowing, cigar shaped, spaceship. Before her brain could even process what she was seeing, the hatch slowly began to open, and out stepped the most gorgeous man she had ever seen. He looked like Tarzan from the Disney movie. Long scraggly auburn hair, cobalt, blue eyes and ...
