Weekly Contest #374
Paul Wood The last man standing ## THE LAST MAN STANDING. They were closing in on him; he was sure of it. He had a sixth sense when it came down to survival, and he had good reason to be, for you don’t hide in the shadows for seven long years without not taking chances. Filing away his paperwork, he glanced up, carefully scanning the office. Taking deep breaths he relaxed, he sees nothing untoward, nothing suspicious or out of place. Just a busy office dealing with the everyday running for the ‘Ministry of Supply’. Nobody is looking at him, ...

True Murder. From my angle of the room, I can just make out the last rays of light as the disappearing sun slides over the horizon. On the bunk below, Nelson stirs, his snoring a rhythmic beat, muttering as he comes to. Looking out past them iron bars, is another world that's in constant flux. A straight road leads onto the distance, dull gunmetal grey. On both sides the fields are awash with colour; a golden corn field swaying in the gentle breeze one side, the other deep purple lavender. But it's the solitary tree that I love, standing th...
Weekly Contest #304
Billy can’t sleep, for he knows what could happen to him during the dozing hours if he succumbs. He tries everything, like opening the large window, but that just lets the sound of the night and the hypnotic beat of the rain to lull him into a trance. He tries to read his comic by torch light but the batteries are soon empty, and the colorful pages tell of a plot that’s pants. He lies there listening to downstairs, where muffled voices sing. His Dad barley able to stand from drink; his mother giving him one more chance. He glances at his clo...

The Portal It started with a row, a colossal mount Vesuvius of a argument. It wasn’t the first time Harry and Ellen had traded insults obscenities at each other. If Ellen’s mum had been there, she would have said, ‘I told you he was no good. Nobody who wears trainers with a suit willturn out good,’ before taking a large drag on a ash heavy cigarette. ‘And as for that temper,’ she would tut tut and puff away. Harry was at the end of his tether this time. Ellen just didn’t understand he was doingall the hours to keep their heads above water. H...
I pay the cabbies bill and with legs like jelly struggle across the packed road, jet lagged and loaded with bags. The last time i was here I was a little girl with a long flowing hair, bunches dancing in the wind. That was over 30 years ago, long before I become an Aussie . Now I was home, due to the fact that we had a call out of the blue. I’m still numb with shock ; Dad who i hadn’t spoken to for three decades because a stubborn streak runs in our family blood and we are stupid had passed away . Standing at the threshold i take in cold dam...
