Intrinsic Value

Tonight was an important night. The humans were gathered at their secret meeting—a meeting I had taken great pains to find out about. It was hard to believe that some humans still practiced that dead, outdated religion. They were called Christians, and they had formed a secret, underground society over the years to preserve their hideous, outdated ideals. Since I was fourteen, I had been put in charge of upholding the values of the Nephilim, which promoted maximizing one’s own potential to promote a better society and fulfill one’s own happi...

Foul Speech

Weekly Contest #373

The fate of humanity relies on me telling the truth. What a sorry fate for humanity, when I am a pathological liar. Lying is how I got my wife to marry me, how I lied about cheating on her, how I got my masters degree in engineering, and how I have so many friends. Simply put, lying is fun. I met my wife five years ago in college. She was in my art class. She was a shy sort, adorable as a button and easy to fool. She was wearing an oversized dress, no makeup, and heavy glasses. Few guys would have seen the beauty of her, but few guys could s...

Half of Everything

Weekly Contest #372

Syn wandered through the sickly green miasma in a daze. In the distance, golden strains of music cascaded off a violin like a waterfall off a cliff. The music was getting louder and louder, but what started off as sweet strains turned chaotic, like nails on a chalkboard. Energing behind all that chaos was an ear shattering scream splitting the air for the chorus. 1 2 3 SCREECH Syn counted the beats in his head, his ears bleeding from the horrendous cacophony of noise, and bleeding further from the predictability of the beat of the drum that ...

Just in Time

Weekly Contest #370

Date: July 20th, 926 Schuyler looked at the decaying corpse curiously, intrigued by how much it had decomposed within just three hours. He sighed, climbing to his feet after kneeling next to it. With his helmet in hand, he turned to his soldiers. “This one’s a goner, too.” Hamlin, his second in command, came to his side. He put a hand on Schuyler’s shoulder. His contingency of knights began mounting up. Schuyler stayed behind for a moment. He didn’t mention that the dead man was one of his closest childhood friends. A soft wind blew and he c...

Swan Maiden

Weekly Contest #368

A man of humblest beginnings and many kindnesses was born in the most unfortunate of circumstances. His parents had died when he was four, and he was taken in by his aunt. His aunt was an aristocratic woman, though she didn’t have the money to backup that lifestyle. She lived in a massive, three storey mansion and where once she put the man to work around the house. She now was selling him as an actor and singer since he was talented in the arts. Contractually, she owned him almost as if he were a slave. The man in question was born delicate...

The Boy-Hero

Weekly Contest #366

Fairchild, the Boy-Hero, sat in his large castle, given to him for saving the kingdom. He was wearing an oversized cape and crown and other fineries that he felt were too extravagant for someone like him. He presided over a small plot of land, run and maintained by fairies, who were glad to do so for free, for everything Fairchild had done for the kingdom. Fairchild was overly grateful for his new wealth, but had become restless a year after he had saved the kingdom. He looked in the mirror, and, seeing his reflection, felt like he didn’t kn...

Cheesecake: Restricted

Weekly Contest #362

Like a computer, when the human body is working correctly, it’s an efficient, marvelous, fast machine. Somehow all these organs smooshed inside you work together to create a living, breathing human working at full capacity. However, with a computer, if one little thing is off, the whole system just might shut down. With the human body, if you make accommodations and sacrifices, your body can often still run at full capacity, even if you are a little ‘off’. I’m one of those people who happens to be ‘off’ by a bit. Personality wise, I hate goi...

The Breakthrough

Weekly Contest #360

One would think that the most incredible thing about Farrah Turner, was that she was a princess born from a star. But, the far more extraordinary thing was that she had found love in a loveless, fallen world. In those peaceful days, she remembered looking into his grayish eyes. Everything was him. Wake up with him, eat with him, cook with him, and go to sleep with him. Wrapped in his arms, she would fall asleep, his greatest comfort in a world that cared little for his struggles. When she woke up before him, she would watch him for a time, p...

Can't Wait to Meet You

Weekly Contest #359

Can’t Wait to Meet You Week 1 It’s dark. Comforting, but dark. In the darkness, something magnificent blooms to life, and stays there. It grows slowly, but surely. On the outside, the parents are overjoyed, and mom and dad constantly talk about how they can’t wait to meet the extraordinary thing that is forming inside mom. Week 27 Me, mommy, and daddy have been together for so long now. I listen to her voice and it soothes me as I listen to her. She sings me songs, she rocks me to sleep, and she and daddy are always talking about me. When d...

Jelly, Bravest of Dogs

Weekly Contest #357

Jelly, Bravest of Dogs Jelly, an Australian cattledog mutt, roamed the streets of the city of Amaline, looking for a pack and a place to call home. His paws were freezing as he went, leaving behind prints in the snow. He sniffed the air and smelled food. He traced the scent to a back alley, where a few creatures wearing masks were eating over a firepit. Jelly instinctively barked at the masked creatures, hackles up. One wearing a blue mask lowered it, and Jelly saw he was human underneath. He stopped barking, reassessing the situation. The ...

Synaesthesia

Weekly Contest #355

Synaesthesia The wind shrieked through the air on a cold, October night. The moon peeked in and out clouds, as if the argument that was about to unfold below was a puppet show to be gawked at. The drama was difficult to see, as it took place inside of a luxury starship, floating gently under the moon. Young men sat backstage, getting ready to entertain the ship full of aliens. The band all practiced their individual instruments in silence. The lead singer was singing while Goozo, his alien manager, went about injecting multiple serums into ...
