Weekly Contest #376
BATTLE “Did you hear that?” Brock’s eyes snapped open. His wife, Quenika, moaned. “What, honey? You hear somethin’?” She wasn’t really awake. “Yeah. A noise downstairs.” He sat up in bed and waited a moment for his head to clear before he stood. He slid his feet into his slippers and stood, unsteadily at first. Brock stepped clumsily around Pepper the dog who lay central in the pathway between the bed and the bathroom, as usual. “Why aren’t you awake and reacting to that noise? Weekly Contest #371

So here I was, going to do three weeks of dirty laundry at 1:30 in the morning at the local 24-hour laundromat. There were no cars in the lot, as I had expected. I should have time to just sit and read peacefully, but hopefully I would not fall asleep. But as I opened the hatch of my Jeep Compass, suddenly there was a man standing beside me. “Gimme yer wallet an’ yer phone!” He waved a kni...
