Thunder Rex

M B

Weekly Contest #372

Milo was terrified of thunderstorms. Most kids his age were, that in itself was not unusual, what was unusual was what he feared about the thunderstorms. It wasn’t the thunder, the lightning, the darkness, or the howling winds. No it was something else entirely. “It’s just a thunderstorm twerp.” Melissa, his older sister scolded him. Rabert shook his head, “No… it’s not the storm that scares me. It’s what comes with the storm that scares me!” His father and mother shared a glance before his father spoke, “Why don’t you tell us one more ti...

Weekly Contest #371

The smell of popcorn lingered in the air as I bagged up the last of it for the dumpster outside. I had sent the rest of my staff - mostly college kids and retirees - home for the evening. I could close up the cinema without them, and the last film of the night was a long epic... they needed the time far more than I did. Ever since the divorce and my wife’s abrupt departure, I don’t feel the need to go home to my extremely empty house. So, no: I didn’t mind staying late. Hell, I’ve spent the night once or twice in a reclining seat. There’s a ...

The Glass

Weekly Contest #369

It was late in the afternoon when I found the small, dirty, and absolutely postage-stamp covered cardboard box waiting for me outside my office door. Frankly I was shocked - a parcel delivered right to my office for the first time ever. I checked the dim hallway, but no deliverybeast in sight. When I saw the amount of stamps, my muzzle fell open, but when I saw who it was from I had to sit down in the rickety chair behind my desk. “Uncle Shepherd,” the upper left address space on the box declared modestly. I set the parcel down on my coffe...

A Cage Sublime

M B

Weekly Contest #359

Do you know what it’s like to be the lover of a goddess? It’s the best and the worst thing at the same time. The waters are clear and cool, the sun is warm but not scalding, a menagerie of plants and animals surround me. Every day and every night, a thing of beauty. The halls of the library whisper to me, urging me to read the tomes and learn the secrets of the universe, or immerse myself in the legends of hundreds of cultures. My cage is a thing of beauty, and a wealth of knowledge that many mortals would never know. It’s a place of won...

Posters and Paydays

Weekly Contest #357

The face on the wanted poster grinned with a maw of jagged teeth. His broad head seemed locked in an eternal dispute over whether it belonged to an ape, a bear, or a goblin. The answer, unmistakably, was bugbear. BORIS STRONGJAW. Notorious highway robber. Crimes: Robbery, extortion, arson, assault, indecent exposure, robbery, extortion, arson, assault, indecent exposure, and repeatedly pitching a tent in the town square. Reward: Five hundred crowns. Two hungry males stood over the notice, one a rogue and one a minotaur. The young man w...

Operation Midnight Tissue

The Golden Child. The Joker. The Wild Card. The Twisted One. Or, as our parents would have it: Sina. Rhea. Drake. Lav. I’m Sina. I’m not a fan of the codename that Lav gave me for lots of reasons. I used to not a huge fans of codenames, but Lav assured us that it would help on our “missions.” Over the years, I’ve grown to annoyingly accept our codenames. Out of spite, I was the one that gave Lav his nickname. He hated it. His familiar - a black ferret named Romulus - hissed whenever I called him that. Romulus wasn’t here - he was scoping...

Courier Woes

M B

Weekly Contest #354

Kashikoi’s dark-furred tail flicked as she wiped sweat from her brow, her cat ears twitching as she noticed her purple-dyed hair and ear fur fading to turquoise. The bright colors contrasted with her gray skin tone, and her green cat eyes narrowed. The “town” was just a collection of scrap metal, cobbled together to resemble buildings. There was the sound of a shard gun firing somewhere in the settlement, but it was such a common occurrence that Kashi didn’t even flinch... But she did undo the clasp of her holster for better access to her ...

Wulfkovia

M B

Weekly Contest #344

Brushka had never been to the palace before. It stood dominating the snowy streets: A beacon of decadence as all around the fox, beasts of all sorts growled at one another - their clothes too large on their gaunt, starving, frames. His purple eyes took in the palace doors as he drew closer. He had been summoned by the queen herself to see her only son: The sickly prince of Wulfkovia. The wolves and bears that guarded the gates glowered at the purple-eyed fox in his brown monks robes as he drew closer. A flash of the invitation and a wolf ...

Footsteps in the Bog

M B

The smell of pine needles and damp earth gave way to the stench of the bog as he rode east. He'd sold pelts in Westhills, using the coin to buy a sturdy mule better suited to the marshy ground of his ancestral lands. The animal, which he'd named 'Mudlark', flicked its ears at every buzzing insect, its plodding steps a monotonous rhythm that mirrored the turmoil in Egeus's own mind. The man with the dirty blonde hair was deep in thought, he hadn't been back in five years. He'd sworn an oath that he'd never let these lands poison him again. ...

The Ferret's Amulet

M B

Weekly Contest #329

The ferret girl scampered down the cobblestone street, scurrying past some older beasts on a corner who growled in annoyance at the kit and her mischievous grin. Their annoyance would turn to anger later when they discovered their missing baubles, but by then she was long gone. Stealing came easy to the ferret, who was not even in her teenage years yet. She had picked the skill up easily, having lived among street thieves her entire young life. She saw the subtle ways they moved their paws and for her it came naturally. Now she found there...

Chapel of Crows

M B

Weekly Contest #325

The letter had said to meet at the chapel in the woods. At first he had thought to burn it and think nothing of it, but the details within had stayed his hand: Phrases known only in certain circles that caught his eye. Whoever this was knew about his old family business - the business of banditry... the life he had sworn off. Let my family hang themselves with the nooses they wove, he thought. Sooner or later the hangman would find them, or the crossbow bolts of the caravan guards. They were dead to him, and he to them. So why had this l...

Blackjack

Weekly Contest #319

The cold damp wind brushed against my brown fur, carrying with it the scent of dead fish and broken dreams. I probably should have pulled my coat closer around myself, but the cold, damp air was soothing on my battered body. My tail thumped against the waterlogged boards of the dock. It had been a hell of a night for this broken down rat detective. One full of old flames, old enemies, and me getting the tar beat out of me by a bunch of thugs. My claws felt the butt of my revolver: not the usual snubby .38, a full size .44. I hate using gu...

Amber, meerkat and ace journalist of the Empire City Tribune, sat at her writing desk surrounded by the clicking of typewriters and the scent of coffee. She idly fished a gummy worm from the candy jar on her desk and scarfed it down as she focused on her assignment. “You know I actually hate you.” Amber looked to her right to see a beaver girl glowering at her. “Why?” Amber asked, flattening her ears. “Because you can scarf those down,” the beaver replied, “and you’re still skinny.” Amber chuckled. “I walk a lot, Nadine.” Nadine huffed ...

A Grey Town

Weekly Contest #311

The cold rain lashed against Halla’s face - her blonde, braided hair plastered to her scalp, mud caked to her boots. She drew her wolf pelt cloak closer around herself as she felt the slight hint of a shiver. This was a different cold than the brutal winters of her homeland: this was a damp cold that soaked through clothes and skin alike until the very soul was damp and chilled. Halla squinted against the thick fog in the graying light, she thought she could make out a hint of a warm yellow glow... or that could have been wishful thinking ...

Yearning

Weekly Contest #309

Lieutenant Davic Sphinx, callsign ‘Riddler’, trudged through the sliding door to his sparse ship quarters still wearing his flightsuit. The soft lights of his quarters flicked on as the young starfighter pilot flopped down in the chair at his desk. After removing his helmet, he ran a hand through his short brown hair and sighed. It had been a long day flying escort for the supply convoys. While it was important, escort duty was often tedious: hours dragging on, flying circles around the freighters and watching for signs of Sh’ra raiders or...
