Anacordia

Weekly Contest #368

This telescope is a wondrous thing. With it, I pierce dust clouds and clusters, seeking something impossible. My eye passes those lesser stars, the giants and dwarfs alike, until I find what I seek. It is a star within a cloud of carbon, grown so old that it is crystallizing into stone. What a thing. A gem that is a thousand miles across, lit from inside by its dying brilliance. In my country, we would call it Astradia, but here aboard the Fletchnor, I must use Anglish. “Aha! I have found it. The diamond star.” I flash my best grin to Ana,...

A Tale Told by Broken Creatures

Weekly Contest #105

The snow was gentle on that day. It fell to the ground in lazy spirals, blown about by the remnants of the wind. There had been a tempest last night, but today only a quiet whisper blew through the high peaks of the Tierra Denai. Cold wind. Hard stone. The roar of avalanches and of storms. These were all that the Traveler had known since he’d begun his journey, for it was a dark world. Paths were few, roads fewer. If many traveled, so did many fall prey to robbers and thieves. Yes, the world was a violent place. A place in which the Travele...

The Train to Kachungjunga

Weekly Contest #101

The train ran on shaky wooden tracks, marching across the snowy mountainside like a caterpillar. The black-iron locomotive led the way, its brass valves hissing steam, and a line of six painted wooden passenger cars trundling merrily behind it. Every car but the black-iron engine was painted like a gypsy caravan, festooned with muted blues and explosive reds, exuberant yellows and moody oranges. Above the train loomed Kachungjunga, the mountain of calm. Ironic name. Massive slabs of frosted ice clung to precarious ledges. Banks of snow loom...

Sourdough

The thief stole through the building with the silent grace of a sliding shadow, following a twangy scent in the air. He dodged the obstacles that littered the floor; the floury bowls and the soiled mixers, and the odd wooden rolling pin. He walked among the steel counters and tiled sinks, invisible to anyone looking over the room. He opened cabinet after cabinet, showering himself in flour, salt, sugar, yeast. He dug through the industrial-size fridges, and then the freezer, pulling out butter, eggs, milk, fruit, meat, and vegetables. Nothin...

The Phantom

It had been twenty-four years since she’d last seen the old house. Mary Jane Kimball stepped carefully up the steps and onto the front porch, running a trembling hand over the victorian bannister. Despite the peeling paint, the little house was still beautiful, a time capsule of memories. The porch swing still creaked when the summer breezes blew, and the flowerbed still held gardenias, zinnias, and tiger lilies, though they had long since escaped into the yard. The old woman adjusted her knitted red sweater and turned the brass knob. The ca...

The Will of the Wind

Weekly Contest #63

By Caden Hill The falcon peered downwards at his prey. He soared hundreds of feet in the air above a roiling Alaskan sea. The water steamed and bubbled, smashing against the dark rocks of the coast to produce titanic upthrusts of freezing liquid. But despite the turmoil below him, the old Peregrine was unfazed. He had braved winters cold enough that the blood began to still within him, and winds so strong that they reduced towering pines to little more than broken twigs. He flew through it all. For if he would not fly, he would not live. An...
