A Sister's Secret

Weekly Contest #374

We all have secrets. Secrets are so much fun. A secret admirer or a secret meet-up. Secrets are thrilling to keep and pleasurably sinful to give away. Of course, unless you are part of the secret and no one should find out. I would have preferred to bear this burden alone because I would never tell anyone, but now I have a comrade. Inside the car, it’s safe from the cold, and Lauren is walking up and down to each paddock to quickly check hooves and feed the horses. In the distance, the barn looms solemnly amongst the mist like a gravest...

The human race must be exterminated. So sorry. Sincerely, the aliens.

Weekly Contest #319

The human race must be exterminated. So sorry. Sincerely, the aliens. The time has come; my five years on Earth have ended. I must submit my findings. It’s not looking good for them — the facts and the numbers are all there. Proof is in my pudding, as they would say. Poor fools. It was a good five years. I enjoyed it. I met the most interesting people and saw wonderful places. My concern is simple: the human race has eaten its own tail. The majority of society is crippled. Most governments are overseen by — bluntly put — idiots. People are ...

Misses Carmichael's Retirement

Weekly Contest #311

With the media, we have pictures painted in our heads. Society reflects its desires on us like a twisted circus mirror. We make assumptions based on expectation. So when we think of lawbreakers, there’s an image already formed: the bad guy in the movies. Big. Mean. Sunglasses. Tattoos. Chains. A mysterious scar across his face. The cliché list goes on. In the bar, a mist of cigar smoke makes the whole room hazy. The fog of good times—and regrets—to come. Poker chips crunch in the hungry hands of their masters. Dice roll with great anticipati...

The Secret Society's Secretary

Weekly Contest #307

Today is my day. I have to make it my day. I will hold my head up high, strut my stuff, and show them what I’ve got. I’m ready to prove myself. This new job is exactly what I needed, and I need to show them I’ll work hard. First day on the job, and I’ll be taking minutes for the meeting. The company holds a meeting every week with all board members and managers. “Good morning, everyone.” The only color on the CEO is the red on her lips. Her hair, suit, and earrings—all white. She looks like the Snow Queen. Chairs scrape against the board...

Of All the Vaults in the World.

Weekly Contest #299

A jewellery exhibition like the world has never seen. It will be groundbreaking—the most diverse and precious of all time. Chinese dynasty jade, Fabergé eggs, and gems worn by royalty. A piece of history set in the form of priceless diamonds. Lucky for me, I get to see these beauties first. It might be in the dark, but their brilliance cannot be dulled. They wait there in the silence, waiting for me to give them my warm touch. As carefully as they have been crafted, they go into my bag. I will be rich. I have suffered long enough. I deserv...

The Chicken Conspiracy for free will.

Weekly Contest #296

CW: Contains themes and/or references to violence, shooting, drugging, and mind control Every story needs a hero, but they also need a villain. I know what I'm doing is right, even if others think I’m a troublemaker. I am the hero no one asked for—the bad guy to the bad guys. No one can know. It would be too contradictory. They won't understand. I work at a lab and find out they’re putting small traces of drugs in people's food. The drug makes people more agreeable and obedient. The pitch was that we’d never have war again—but that was a ...

The Spy's House sitter.

Weekly Contest #291

It’s all coming together now: red wine (Merlot), a hand mask, a face sheet mask, popcorn, pizza, and finally, Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth Bennet has pearls twisted into her hair, and all my pain and anxiety melt away at the sight of her. It’s silly, I know, but this comfort movie has a way of healing the wounds on my soul. I sink deeper into Sandra’s couch, letting a wave of gratitude wash over me. I’m getting paid to watch a movie at someone else’s house. Sure, I walked Pickle, fed him his kibble with the special sauce, and gave him a b...

Ghost and the artist.

Weekly Contest #221

The days have been a blur. How long has it been? The weeks are months and the months years. This time of year is special, because I feel more real. The afterlife continues where life ended. In this forest. Tied to this realm unable to move on completely into the eternal peace. Something is keeping me here. I am looking for something, but what it was has faded away with the seasons. Dwelling the forest gives no answer to the unsettling feeling. The feeling that something is missing. An uncomfortable feeling. Living in a third dimensional pain...

Catching killers with killers.

Weekly Contest #219

We have hit a wall with this investigation. There are no eyewitnesses, no CCTV footage, no DNA and no clear pattern. We have nothing really. All we have is facts. Puzzle pieces that are so different and the same they cannot be put together. Lines that are so messy the dots cannot be connected. All we have is facts. The first body came into the lab, and we started investigating, then the second then the third until it reached nine. What was the hardest of all is that there was no pattern. The locations where the bodies were found, method of...

Choose your character change your life.

Weekly Contest #208

The ballroom is bustling full of life. The commotion is joyful as everyone parades and shows off their costumes. Laughter and violins fill the air. Everyone looks so mysterious yet also so confident and bold in the identity they have chosen. Fairies, Princesses, Knights, Rabbits, colourful birds and some without being something in specific just has an elaborate mask in colourful clothes. From the corner of the room the servants see it all. If they put down our trays of champagne we could blend in too as well. The servants wear suits with ma...

An actress acting out.

Weekly Contest #207

“Cut!” The director gives a frustrated sigh while shaking his head. “Madison, you have to say ‘I’m not so sure about this, let’s leave.’ Please stick to the script.” Madison Hamilton does not look impressed with the director telling her what to do. “Fine, just give me a minute.” “Hey! You can’t just leave when you please!” Madison does not hear a word and charges forward to the trailer. The director pinches his nose as if anticipating a headache. The whole crew look at him in expectation. “Everyone take five!” The crew start to disper...

A cowboy in Wonderland

Weekly Contest #206

The landscape was ever changing as usual. The three moons hung in the sky like an omen. Dust and rocks crunched under my unicorn's hooves. There was a pile of shoes. Unusual, because it is a bit early in the year for fairies to collect shoes. Here and there was a little dried out bush. In the distance the mountain range framed the nothingness. The giant frames where gold with coils. To look at the serene view was quite relaxing, but I think I am just tired of riding for hours. Time stood still, but has already sped past and the sun was sett...
