What You Don't Know

Emily Lockhart was at the kitchen bench of her brother’s kitchen, mixing a cake batter from scratch for her nephew’s fifth birthday party. Brady loved milk chocolate, much like most kinds, and this recipe was full of it. She’d already whipped the buttercream that went in-between the two layers and also covered the outside of the cake. A few rosette swirls and a Happy Birthday written in white chocolate would finish it off nicely. His parents had ordered enough pizza for lunch to feed a small army. The back patio was turned into a children’s...

Dangerous Times

(a continuation of the previous short story Black As The Night.) Meredith Jarvis was never one of those girls who dreamed about weddings, not even her own. So, it came as a complete surprise, and not in a good way, to be led down the aisle wearing a beautiful pale cream full sleeved dress, a veil, tiara and matching shoes. She had a gold chain with her intended groom's family crest, hung around her neck. In her ears were small gold studs. Her makeup was simple but elegant; red lips, blushed cheeks, lavender eyeshadow. The number of people i...

Black As The Night

Meredith Jarvis was more than aware that vampires were real; she’d been a part of a human family who had served them for many generations. Ephraim Hill Manor was an estate located many miles from the main city; the smaller surrounding buildings had sprung up to accommodate something like a small town or village, enclosed within iron gates and a stone wall around the entire property. Outsiders were welcomed with caution, but most were able to scrap out a living and not feel the need to go elsewhere. Meredith’s mother ran a local laundry plac...

Forever

Weekly Contest #288

Monique Jones stood undercover, outside of the café. It had begun raining almost from the moment she’d gotten into her car this morning. The clouds looked like they would be settling in for the day. They even forecast snow for later. But that wouldn’t stop her from getting the specific coffee she was after. The Opal Garden had been in business for about eight months, but it quickly gained a steady reputation. More people came rushing up behind her. The owner Anabella glanced at her watch, while unlocking the door. “9 am, right on time. Hey ...

WISHES

Maya Larson was seventeen when she got a phone call that would change her life. She’d seen an advertisement online, which was an audition for a girl group. One of her unfulfilled ambitions, was to turn her love of dance into more than a hobby and this could be her opportunity to try. The name was already decided and how many members were in the group. Maya sent in an application and told her parents of her plans. After much discussion, they agreed to lend her the money for a trip to another state. It would take several hours for her to arri...

Broken

This wasn’t how Willow Myers had hoped her day would go. Being in an unfamiliar dark room, tied to a chair with a gun pointed at her head, did not rank highly on her list of experiences she’d recommend to anyone. The lights around her really were quite dim, so she wasn’t able to make out much. However, there was no way she could miss the three other figures a few feet from her, surrounding a fourth person that they had beaten up badly. She blinked in shock when she recognized just who it was lying on the floor all bloody and bruised. She fou...

A Hidden Kindness

Friday March the 15th dawned cloudy and gloomy; kind of appropriate weather for attending a funeral. No rain had been forecast, so that might be considered a plus. Pandora knew her brother Leonard wouldn’t be up for at least another half an hour; she often relished quiet moments by herself. She didn’t have any trouble getting to sleep the night before. This undisturbed slumber was something of a surprise to her, given the circumstances. Once more she had awakened to another day. “I feel alive.” Which was more than she could say for her pare...

Ever After?

It was so terribly cold. Snow was falling and it was almost dark. But Carissa Johnston was already over halfway to Delilah’s Diner when the skies began to change. She cursed silently but managed to get through the door without a hassle. She then stood patiently in line for her turn to order. Her green eyes drifted towards the window. The trees were swaying outside, as the wind all of a sudden picked up with surprising force. The snow was also coming down heavier and hitting the glass a little bit harder. It would have been hellish trying to...

Vacant Darkness

Liana opened her eyes, unsure at first of what had disturbed her sleep. She soon found out; the strong smell of smoke and bright orange flames surging towards her from the doorway woke her up completely. The fire seemed to be everywhere. In a panic, calling for help was her first thought, but her throat was so dry. She could barely even manage a faint scratchy whisper. Liana quickly got up from her bed, moving as far away from the flames as she could. The heat intensified, as the fire spread throughout the room, destroying everything it tou...

Another Day

The end of year holidays were just around the corner and Jewel was expected to host the family Christmas dinner. She knew it had to be her turn now; her brother Mathew, his wife Carrie and their kids, were responsible for dinner the previous year. She had an idea of the food she wanted to cook, and she scribbled a note, so she would remember to buy the necessary ingredients when she next did her shopping. She also planned to switch up the decorations for her white Christmas tree once again; she'd seen a mix of blue, silver and pink baubles ...

Safe?

It was a Wednesday and October 31. Melody Haynes had agreed to take her cousins trick or treating. Seven-year-old twins may seem like a handful, but Melody was one of Kevin and Thalia's favorite people, so the siblings made an effort to contain their mischievous natures with her. Hence, the reason why she was usually the first one to be called upon as a babysitter. She never even thought about asking for payment whenever she looked after the children; they were family. But Auntie Alison always insisted on giving her money. She kept the bank...

All We Are

Crystal Addison stood back and surveyed her latest project. The black bookcase was repainted in different shades of blue and grey, with an intricate silver filigree pattern on the top and sides. She had known straight away, when she'd spotted this piece of furniture at Annabelle's Op shop weeks ago, that she could do something special to it. A good clean, two coats of chalk paint, plus some very careful stenciling, finished off the bookcase nicely. She snapped several pictures with her camera, to post online later in the day. Two years ago,...

Summer

Every morning, Piper made a pot of black tea. She waited as the kettle boiled and tipped just the right amount of leaves into the teapot; no pocket teabags around this house. Both Piper's mother and grandparents always insisted on using the 'real stuff', so of course that's what she did too. You really can tell the difference, especially if tea is your main hot drink. Piper poured the steaming water slowly into the pot and placed the lid on top. A few minutes later, she removed the small strainer and threw the wet leaves into the bin. Her f...

The Holidays

Mikaela Reid knew she shouldn't have left her shopping until the last minute, with Christmas being just weeks away. But she was here now, so she may as well get a move on. At this very busy time of the year, she was actually rather lucky to secure a spot in the car park that was only a couple of rows from the StoneyVille mall's main entrance. Before taking another step, she checked that her car was locked properly. She saw an empty trolley by the doors and quickly grabbed it before someone else could. Inside, the air condtioners were going ...

Spellbound

Jesse Serrano was currently standing a few steps to the right offstage in the Blackout Theatre, waiting for her name to be called. She could not believe she had let her mother Elaine talk her into this : The Hollows were an incredibly popular act known for their unique performances that often involved daring stunts and amazing conjuring tricks. They toured all over the place, always looking out for new blood. They came up with the idea of putting on talent shows. Jesse sometimes had a sense that a couple of the Hollows were about as ordinar...
