Over the Horizon

Weekly Contest #373

Over the Horizon 1462 Words The first thing they noticed was the sun. It wasn’t the normal yellowish-orange color. It was a deep red hanging low over the subdivision like something was on fire behind the trees. “Well look at that,” Tina’s husband said from the kitchen window. She glanced up from the coffee she was pouring. For a moment, the silence consumed the room. The sky had been strange for upwards of two days now. It was so foggy. It looked almost iridescent outside, like when there is an eclipse. The haze was making the houses ac...

C7ECK

Weekly Contest #372

My word count is at 1029, but this site is saying I only have 996. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Bella counted in her mind while physically checking that the burners on the stove were in the OFF position before leaving the house. The gas stove ignited in her mind. She went back inside. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. She checked the burners again. Yet, they were still all in the off position. She checked the carbon monoxide detector. The green light blinked steadily. She pressed the test button. It chirped indicating that...

The Nest

Weekly Contest #371

The Nest Word Count 1655 The pigeon loved the smell of popcorn that emanated from the movie theatre on main street. It often hung around the majestic doors in hopes that pieces of the delicacy drizzled with butter would fall from the overfilled buckets the humans trafficked in and out of the theatre each day. Late one afternoon, the pigeon got caught in a crowd of people, and quite by accident, was ushered into the theatre. The pigeon merely kept moving so as to not get trampled by a group of Cub Scouts headed in to se...

Synchronicity

Weekly Contest #370

Synchronicity 1745 Words Adam’s Apple Watch zinged on his wrist three times. He looked down and was happy to see that he had achieved his ten thousand step goal for the day and it was only 11:11 am. That made up for the fact that the airline had lost his luggage. Adam was a teacher, from Australia, on holiday. He was also a proud Hilton Diamond member. He stood in the brightly lit lobby of the Cozumel Hilton, and approached the counter waiting to check-in. “Welcome to the Cozumel," the clerk said with enthusiasm. “Can I get you a ...

Family Ties

Weekly Contest #370

Family Ties 2474 Words "Make the Drop." Maria knew she had heard them correctly. She had often wondered about her family's ties. No one had ever said the M-word, but in her family things were rarely said directly. Important information was usually communicated through raised eyebrows, and sentences that seemed to stop abruptly whenever Maria entered the room. Thanks to Netflix, Maria liked to think she was well versed in what happened to people w...

Yesterday

Weekly Contest #369

Yesterday 1092 Words She had to let him go. Her baby was safe. It was just a new chapter. Cara sat on the edge of Erik’s bed, surrounded by the evidence of a life that had shifted. There were empty laundry baskets scattered around his room. The only thing left on his desk was a picture of him and his Grandfather. Some of the wire hangers were still looped up over the clothes rack from when Erik had pulled the garments down to pack. The shelves with his football, lacrosse trophies, and Star Wars Lego sets remained. Why couldn’t she stop...

Grief"ity"

Weekly Contest #369

*Sensitive Content: Mental Health and Violent Imagery Grief“ity” 2487 Words The white cardigan hung off her body like a giant garbage bag. She couldn’t remember the taste of food. The last meal she’d had, had been with him. She looked around their apartment. It looked and felt wrong. There was a collection of empty coffee cups on the end table. The curtains were drawn so tightly that just a sliver of sunlight made its way through. She couldn’t get herself off the couch to do anything except go to the bathroom out of neces...

Behind Closed Doors

Weekly Contest #367

Behind Closed Doors 1942 words Maya cautiously closed the bathroom door behind her and turned on only one set of lights instead of the two. That would draw less attention. She opened the small white bin where she kept her feminine products and dug beneath a box of tampons until she found the test she had hidden at the very bottom. She was two weeks late. She sat on the closed toilet seat and stared at the little plastic stick in her hand. Two weeks, only two weeks. No big deal. She tried really hard to process what could be happening. ...
