Weekly Contest #376
There is no greater test of faith than to be faced with the object of our beliefs and find we are wrong. That was the lesson which Anthony Martins learned the summer of his twentieth birthday. It was a lesson which changed everything for him. Anthony had many successes in his youth. He overcame the peer pressure to lead a life of drugs and crime with his classmates. He struggled through mental health and depression to graduate at the top of his high school class. He endured the loss of his parents in a terrible car accident and the tragic lo...
Weekly Contest #375
Have you ever had one of those nights where it just seemed like nothing good could possibly happen? I mean seriously nothing good. Like, if you survived this and they sold the movie rights it was so wild that you just knew somehow Seth Rogen was going to be involved in the film? That kind of crazy night? If you have, please come see me at my shop on Jefferson Street so good old JP can give your fortune a little polish, cuz it sounds like you need it. That’s me, by the way, JP, the fancy fake psychic with real magic powers over people’s fate ...
Weekly Contest #373
I did not kill my family. Whatever they say, whatever evidence they think they have, I didn’t do it. My wife… My kids… They were dead long before they say I killed them. But I didn’t kill them! I did kill…something…but whatever it was had already killed my family. The trial is already over. They are going to kill me. There is nothing I can do about that now. But they didn’t let me testify. They didn’t let me explain. I know it will sound crazy, but it’s the truth. That’s why I escaped. That’s why I found this apartment with a computer. I hav...
Weekly Contest #370
It chased them. They ran. Whether or not they would be able to escape it was never really a question. They couldn’t. When you are crashing through the woods late at night, barely able to see, barely aware of your surroundings, and barely able to care, everything around you becomes part of the predator on your heels. Every snapped twig becomes the sound of pursuit, even when you know you made the sound yourself. The rustling of dry leaves at your feet becomes the most terrifying background noise imaginable. It was entirely likely that they wo...
Shortlisted for Weekly Contest #368 ⭐️
I hate the city. No, let me elaborate: I hate going into the city. Once more: I really hate going into the city. I have really come to prefer the smaller Midwest towns. You know, the ones with a population cap of 25,000? Anything bigger than that and things get complicated. People have a higher chance of recognizing you when you don't want to be recognized. In my world, that can be dangerous. Of course, I don't mean I live in a different world. I live in the same grungy America as everyone else. I roll my eyes at politics, I love a good pizz...
Weekly Contest #365
Darkness gained a new meaning on nights when the city's most important business was handled. There was a feeling in the air that told all of Quaga's residents that it would be ill-advised to light an extra lantern. Black smoke from the nearby volcanoes would mingle with black clouds to choke the stars from shining on those black, moonless nights. Those nights were the sort of nights where a single light could make you a victim. Worse, it could make you a witness to something you shouldn't have seen. The city’s most important business wasn't ...
Weekly Contest #362
A light rain tapped against the high windows. The white-grey clouds blanketed the countryside as far as the eye could see. The weather was less than pleasant, but showed no signs of any impending storm. Essentially, it was a lovely English summer. On the other side of the rain spattered windows, the little salon was warm and dry thanks to a well-tended fireplace. Two young women were preparing to sit down for an afternoon tea. Both were young adults. Both were beautiful with blonde hair and blue eyes. Beyond that, the two seemed markedly dif...
Weekly Contest #355
In the aftermath of billions of deaths, every individual death that follows means more to the survivors than it ever did before. Many of those deaths went unmourned or uncelebrated. They were just another fact of life in the After; another footnote on the page of a dying world. Sometimes, however, the life that was now missing could affect the lives of those left behind in so many ways that no one of them could see what those around them saw. Empathy was one of the first things lost in the After. Sarah Perkins saw the death of Doc as not onl...
Weekly Contest #351
It was a month ago when I first heard the screams. I should say ‘scream’ because that first night it was just the one, prolonged sound that pierced the night and ripped me from my dreams. I had not timed it, but it seemed to last an eternity to my tired brain. As it rang through the halls of Father’s house, I sat in my bed unmoving. When the scream finally stopped, it was just as sudden and just as unnerving. I waited to see if the sound would repeat, but that first night it did not. Indeed, I don’t even remember going back to sleep. I simpl...
Weekly Contest #349
“Get down!” The warning shouldn't have been necessary. However, the young guy, Chad, had thrown caution to the wind to piss in the wind. That's why he didn't see the giant flaming glob descending on his post. The old guy, I think his name was Buck or something, barely got the warning out in time. Chad, to his credit, didn't stop to look around like a chump. He just dove backwards, back behind the cover of their busted up white van. Seconds later, the spot where he'd been standing was splattered. Chunks of the stuff stayed aflame and spread o...
Weekly Contest #348
She came at me across the crowded room. She walked right past the off duty firefighters wearing shirts two sizes too small. She walked by the slick Cuban guy in the pink button up. Out of all the options in the bar that Saturday night, she came to me. Her short hair was dyed a vibrant and unnatural shade of orange with tips bleached white. Her entire outfit was made to look practical, maybe even reputable, but it was clearly better suited for highlighting her physical assets more than her professional ones. She approached and spoke to me wit...
Weekly Contest #347
Today was a good day. My parents were in town and they stopped by to visit. Heather and I met them at the door and it felt so picturesque. We don't live in the suburbs or anything, just another census mark in a small midwest town. That didn't keep Heather from smiling at my parents and giving them all the gracious welcomes and “excuse the mess” commentaries. I had spent all day picking up the house to make it presentable, obviously, but that is what you say when you have company over. Her eyes sparkled when she said it and she just looked so...
