Weekly Contest #377
The funeral was ghastly. They had the scented candles set out- a fire hazard, really- and the smell of sage burned her nose. Forget-me-nots were everywhere in little bouquets in simple vases or bundles attached to the walls and doors, with yellow bows. Everyone knew that lilies were the better, more sophisticated option. That, paired with the embroidered table centrepieces collected over the years, was draped over pillows, chairs, sofas, and set out on the coffee tables. There wasn’t a single surface area exposed. Probably for the best, sinc...
Weekly Contest #275
“There’s a woman here!” our captor yells—his breath reeks of fermented garlic, and with groping hands, he starts searching my body. My guide to this hellhole, two men, both in traditional beige khakis and bucket hats look like they're about to shit their pants. I don’t blame them, given the mobster-looking men surrounding us and the giant machete, one guy is holding. It’s not great, but at least I’m one step closer to locating what my father needs. When I told them I needed a tour of the elaborate tunnels to locate something special, I wasn’...
Weekly Contest #246
Warning: Use of profanity Amy’s Bedroom “Hey Amy, should I wear the purple or the black top?” “Hmm, maybe the black one. The purple doesn’t go with the pants.” “What if I change the pants?” “Don’t! These pants make your ass look fantastic!” “You’re right! What was I thinking? You know I’m really excited to go out tonight. It’s been forever.” “Right! Ever since you started dating Nick, you haven’t gone out with us.” “You know, this’ll actually be our first time going clubbing together as a couple.” “Oooo? Really?” “Yeah with work being what...
Weekly Contest #245
He found her below deck, near the ethereal crystal that powered the ship to stay afloat. She sat cross-legged with her eyes closed. Her frizzy hair needed brushing and he noted as he got closer, that a bath and some new clothes wouldn’t hurt. He didn’t know if he had any female clothing but would look to get her something clean. Despite her abysmal appearance, her serine face was concentrated. Brows creased as whatever powers mingled with her thoughts. He knew better than to interrupt a Kristl during their…process. It still boggled him that ...
Weekly Contest #239
My day started like any other, with talking cats and raining pearls. And no, not the kind from your grandmother's necklace. These are imperfect, not quite a circle, discolored, and considered not ‘good enough’ for fancy necklaces. They’re my favorite. People don’t like it when it rains pearls and I don’t get it. It’s much better than when it rains big, heavy stuff like wheels and microwaves. One time we had an aluminum storm! The electric currents had us holed up for two days. I went stir-crazy, but at least Mittens and I were safe. Sure,...
Weekly Contest #237
**Mild use of profanity** To Whomever This May Concern, February 3rd, 2024, 11:48 PM You insolent jackasses. I purchased an item from your online store over two months ago, with a guarantee it would arrive BEFORE Christmas. Guess what! It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and do I have it? NO. If this doesn’t get straightened out IMMEDIATELY I expect a FULL refund, a discount from any item of my choosing (that is IF I decide to ever order from you guys again), and an apology letter from your boss. If this is how you run a business, then I...
Weekly Contest #235
Stomach keen, snout sniffing. Beady eyes locate the prize. A seed, small and delightful; will end the hunger. A step. One, two, maybe three. Pause. Ear twitch. Sound? Nothing now. Confidence returns. Step three, four, and five. Scuttle here, scuttle there. Slip and weave through the long grass. The path is endless with four legs, while giants can do this with two steps. Little claws latch onto the seed and plop it past stuffed cheeks. Delightful and delicious. One, two, and three more. The hunger never ends, but it is sated. There are mo...
Weekly Contest #227
White powder glistened on everything he saw. It covered the trees, forcing branches to curve and bend to an almost snapping point. His breath came in rasps, vaporizing in thick steam before his face. The cold bit through his thermal clothes, numbing his fingers. His skin prickled, desperate for the friction that welcomed warmth. Ice coated his eyelashes and stuck together every time he blinked. He had long ago abandoned his goggles as they kept frosting over. Visibility was low with or without the goggles. The wind howled, pulling puffy gra...
Weekly Contest #225
Emmie wished the butterfly feeling in the pit of her stomach didn’t exist. She was doing everything in her power to calm her nerves. Deep breathing, counting the floating leaves on the river and constantly reassuring herself. Standing in the middle of the park, she forced her feet to remain glued to the cobblestones. To her right, an old tire dangled from a massive oak tree, whose leaves had fallen, creating a blanket of gold and orange surrounding her. To her left, the river that ran through the middle of the park, still had a few stray du...
