Umbrae Animae

Weekly Contest #348

When I first noticed the changes, I did nothing to stop them. It started with my senses. The world around me dimmed. Hue and vibrancy faded away to grays. What did it matter that the flowers were no longer pink and yellow? Did it ever matter? The sky's cerulean paled to dusty cornflower, hardly distinct from any overcast day. Everything that entered my mouth was sand. The pines outside my apartment no longer washed me in their surface-cleaner scent. Pillows were pressed over my ears, turning my heartbeat into an ever present, pounding drum. ...

The Loop

Weekly Contest #305

It took a few seconds to realize I was utterly and completely lost. Not the kind of lost when you’re shopping in a grocery store with an unfamiliar layout and the bread is no longer on aisle three. No, this was the kind of lost that makes your head spin and question whether or not you’re even in the same country you started in. I knew I was in the Texas Hill Country, somewhere between Wimberly and my intended destination, Fredericksburg. At least, that was the case forty minutes ago before my phone died. “Mark, don’t you have a phone charger...

Callie Fannin walked quickly through the library's foyer, maintaining the sacred silence as best she could. Taking a left, she found herself in front of one of the community room doors. She rubbed her sweaty palms on her jeans. Why was she so nervous? A notice taped to the door read: ‘Author’s Anonymous Writing Workshop - Instructor Theodore Wolfe, 2PM-4PM every third Saturday of the month.’ It was one-forty-five; she had plenty of time. While contemplating the flyer and her own discomfort, she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned to see a...

The Turning of Mark Ryu

Weekly Contest #301

The cheese was smelly and aged to perfection, but the rat sitting in front of it didn't seem to care. Its pink nose twitched, whiskers flicking. After a moment, it turned away from the cheese without so much as a nimble. “Yes!” Mark spun around in his swivel chair, his arms raised in triumph. The lab on the third floor was empty except for the janitor who gave him a little ‘yay.’ Mark laughed, pushing off from the table and shooting himself across the floor to his desk. He opened his laptop, pulled up the appropriate document, and began to t...

Weekly Contest #300

(Note: This story alludes to physical abuse and alcohol addiction) You can’t leave. You know that, right? Aubrey closed her bedroom door, a loud creak of protest sounding from its rusty hinges. She stood with her back against the wood, her eyes staring ahead at the baby blue paint peeling off the walls, comprehending nothing. The beer bottle had shattered next to her right ear and a ringing still lingered there. “It's ok,” she whispered, placing a trembling hand over her rattling heart, “just breathe.” Beyond the door, she could hear her fat...

Peonies and Fireflies

Shortlisted for Weekly Contest #298 ⭐️

To say that the chicken coop was in turmoil would be an understatement. It was in cacophony, at war, filled with the casualties of trauma. Feathers filled the air as if a down pillow had been hit with a shotgun. The terrified squawking of hens sounded like a siren’s choir. Shadows scattered every which way as the hanging lights swayed violently in the whirlwind of flapping wings. On the outside of the coop, a single fox observed the chaos, a dead chicken clamped in its jaws. The porch lights flicked on at the farm house, and the fox turned a...
