The Post of Halloween

Weekly Contest #379

Another Halloween had come and gone; Then it was November. The first of November was the last call of spooky season. Last day for haunted attractions, last chance for a legit Halloween party, and all the little kids still had their candy and wore their costumes one last time. And before you knew it, it was October again with skeletons and spider webs covering porches and yards. The little kids choosing their costumes for the big night. Ryan wasn't a little kid nor did he have any. Neither did either of his two roommates, Blue and Conner. Th...

Murder Mystery or Comedy?

Weekly Contest #312

"Uughhh, I am so bored. No one's texted me back....okie, opening chatfriend. Hello, Chatfriend" "Hello, Alex. Do you need some music recommendations today?" "No... -sigh- I need someone to talk to. I'm just so bored" "I'm sorry to hear you are bored. What do you want to talk about?" “I don’t knoooow. Just...I dunno, tell me something. Like a story.” “What kind of story would you like? Murder mystery? Comedy?” “I don’t care; I just want to feel something other than boredom. I want to feel” “I could order you a touch-and-sound book. See if an...

Jealist

Weekly Contest #306

1.Contact Solution I hated when I had to buy contact solution; it was just a reminder of how I couldn’t afford Lasik and then I would get into thinking about how it wasn’t right that Lasik wasn’t covered by insurance. It’s eyesight! So, what if everyone wanted to be able to see without glasses or contacts? Then I got to that feeling I really hated- the unwarranted jealousy followed by unwarranted guilt of having that jealousy of my associate, Brie, who had gotten Lasik for free because her dad is a Lasik surgeon. It’s not like she forced her...

Blue Eyes

Weekly Contest #264

I never considered myself antisocial or social. I didn’t prefer crowds but would be in them for sporting events or concerts. I liked going to movies on opening night to avoid spoilers- can't be spoiled if you see it immediately. I don’t know why I was worried about it when my social media was all sports and gaming stuff anyway. I’m Jeremy and I considered myself a usual 24-year-old guy, with medium blonde hair and blue eyes, glasses, average height and average weight. I’d been working at the same factory with my best friend from high school,...

Suit Up

Weekly Contest #254

It was a normal Tuesday for a normal person like me, Lynn Alma. I’m average all the the ‘round. Average height, average weight, brown eyes, and medium brown shoulder length hair that I kept in a ponytail. I had gotten average grades throughout school, a couple A’s here and there, mostly B’s and C’s with a couple unfortunate but ultimately unaffecting D’s and F’s. I had gotten lower grades in math- numbers just weren’t my strong suit. And now I work at a manufacturing plant making window seals- the little rubber bits that keep the cold air ou...

Reasonable Answers

Weekly Contest #220

I barely heard the words the first time; they were faint and warbled. I took in a sharp snort-like inhale as my eyes batted open. I leaned all my weight on my elbow. Everything was warped and blurry for a few seconds. I squeezed my eyes shut hard to clear them as I yawned out my words. “Wha di you sah?” “Are you hungry?” the other voice repeated more clearly. I was still half-asleep and just processing waking up to determine any level of hunger or fullness. I sat up more and lifted my arms to stretch them out of their sleep positions. But...

Who are you?!

Weekly Contest #206

I was walking to my black sedan, using the fob to unlock it, after a Friday night class to go to my job. It was a rainy night, making everything look sleek and more muted behind the steady drops. The double-glass doors had splattered drops blocking reflections. The motion-activated light of the foyer had gone off. I pulled my hoodless jean jacket on as my only defense against the wet, cool air. The streetlight at the corner gave off an orange halo as the only light source. I was the only car that parked in the back lot because it was faster ...

Alarming News

When you get a home alarm system put in, you really don’t expect to need it. Because either it's too late or you think having it all you need to be safe. My name is Alison Smith nee James. I’m average height, average weight and have shoulder length brown hair with artificial highlights and brown eyes. I am as mediocre and plain as it gets. I married an equally average man named Steven Smith and we have three kids ages 7 (nearly 8),12, and 14. I work from home and Steve works from 8pm-4pm. He occasionally has to go out of town for work and r...

That's why it's called 'Gambling'

Weekly Contest #180

Life can teach lessons even in a pseudo-casino, like Not Vegas. ‘Not Vegas’ was once a private veterans club in the outskirts of Cleveland, OH. But over time fewer and fewer military men and women joined the club and it had become a social club that basically opened its doors to anyone over 21. The new owner changed the name to ‘Not Vegas’- supposed to be the closest thing to Las Vegas one could get in Ohio. It had one major reno in the building's lifetime and in its prime was a bright red brick building with white pillars wrapped in swirli...

Weekly Contest #179

“New Year Resolutions are the dumbest things” Kali said as she sipped her glass of white wine with an eye roll. I just made a shrug at her comment. It had stemmed from her catching a glimpse at my phone that had a google search of ‘how to make new year's resolutions happen’ and had stumbled into ‘how to make a vision board’. I found an app and started making one on my phone. “They are” she insisted. Kali had short almost black, brown hair, hazel eyes and wore makeup to look like she wasn’t wearing makeup. She had naturally tan skin and wa...

Catastrophy Coffee

Weekly Contest #173

Holidays aren’t the only time one can receive gifts and I had received loads of gifts from my family members when I got my first place. I’m Mira and I achieved living-on-my-own status at 33. It’s a two-bedroom duplex apartment and after too many years of paying off student debt, I finally got to move out on my own. I love my family but living with them forever can make one feel restricted. And I never lived with friends because every time I saw friends live with friends, they ended up not friends; socially claustrophobic. So, I accepted th...

Inverted Cinderella.

Weekly Contest #172

Men can be a real pain in the buttocks. I, Novella Morai, 31, am really sick of living up to my name in the relationship department. I might not be Emma Watson, but I have shoulder length dark brown hair that I get highlights in, a perfect fake tan, and sparkling green eyes, and I have an athletic hour-glass figure. I work out, use whitening toothpaste, and a goddess-like makeup-collection. I’m hot, okie? But looks aren’t everything because not only have my attempted relationships been short-lived but they have also been the short end of the...

Long Way Home

Weekly Contest #171

I got into my faded tan malibu and slammed the driver’s side door closed. I gently tossed my tawny canvas bag onto the passenger side seat before Ieaning back against the driver’s seat, closing my eyes. I took in an exhausted and exasperated sigh of a breath from completing another day I couldn’t get back. I opened my eyes and looked at the over-worked, tired, sagging eyes in the rearview mirror. My blue eyes were once bright and ready for adventure. I never used to keep my brown hair short, and my skin was never this pale. The only thing k...

Business as Usual

Weekly Contest #170

Warning: The following story has some triggering bits including alpha male behavior, mention of nudity. Nothing explicit or gory, but maybe sensitive. It was business as usual in the upper district of Andrea Hills. An upscale and slightly eccentric area that was deemed to be the baby of Rodeo Drive and Downtown LA in Ohio. People went to Andrea Hills for atmosphere and character; they wanted non-cookie-cutter but tasteful homes and restaurants. People who wanted a taste of California and all four seasons. Andrea Hills homed ‘The Caroline’....

It's only the first draft

Weekly Contest #169

There really is no way to prepare for the sudden fear that goes right down your spine when a flash of lightning illuminates an area in the night with a ghostly white light and the area it briefly lights up is a graveyard. You become acutely aware that you’re surrounded by headstones and beneath them are bodies of those long gone. You also become aware (and terrified) that six feet isn’t actually that deep. Now, the chances of those not-that-deeply-buried bodies actually being able to get out their coffins and climb out of the packed dirt ar...
