It was a beautiful day for a wedding. The weather was perfect, and the air was full of buzzing excitement and joy. Inside the church, the groom and the priest stood at the front of the altar, patiently awaiting the arrival of the bride. Guests lined the pews and they all stood up in anticipation for the wedding party’s entrance. Aria plastered a smile on her face, and held her bouquet steady as she waited in line behind the rest of the other bridesmaids in the lobby of the church. To the left stood the groomsmen, and Aria held her arm out ...
Weekly Contest #180
“Alright it's decided. Heads, we stay in for the night or tails, we go out! That sound fair to you?” “Yeah, I guess.” Stella nodded reluctantly as she watched her friend, Lacey, twirl a quarter between her fingers. She really hoped it landed on heads. Staying home and watching Harry Potter movies while eating bowls of popcorn sounded like the perfect way to spend a Friday night, but Lacey didn’t agree. Lacey, one of her oldest friends, was much more extroverted. She loved going out, meeting new people, and visiting new places. In her mind,...

It was 8pm on New Year’s Eve and Lia was sprawled out on her couch, clutching the remote in her hand as she aimlessly scrolled through some movie options. This is fine. This is fun too. Her hair had been curled, makeup had been applied, and in her closet was the gorgeous sparkly dress that she had bought a month earlier. She had been so excited to wear it, but now she didn’t have the energy to put it on. Instead she was still wearing the pajamas that she had woken up in that morning. Lia figured that she must have looked pretty ridiculous,...
Weekly Contest #170
There were two things that Liv hated more than anything else in the world: drunk people and wet socks. It took everything in her not to scream her head off when Carter Matthews stumbled into her and spilled two entire cups full of beer down her pants. “Whoops.” He stepped back and looked down at the floor, where a small puddle lay by her feet. Looking back up at her, he gave her a lopsided smile and laughed. “Sorry about that, Liz.” “It’s Liv.” She corrected him, feeling slightly annoyed that he couldn’t remember her name even though they...
“I’ve got a plan.” “Oh god, what is it?” Selena rolled her eyes at the mere sound of her annoying next door neighbor’s voice. Leo Alvarez was the bane of her existence. He always played ridiculously loud music that made her eardrums ring, he would park in her assigned parking spot all the time, and whenever it rained, he would always leave muddy footprints in front of her door. In short, he was the absolute last person on earth that she would ever want to get stuck in a locked room with. And yet, here they were. It was in moments like th...
Weekly Contest #169
Tessa walked down the street with her arms full of grocery bags. Normally she and her boyfriend, Brandon, would drive down to the market for their weekly shopping trips but she had decided to walk today. Brandon had gone out to have lunch with his mother and he had taken the car that they shared. Luckily for her, the market was only a ten minute walk away. As Tessa walked, she looked up at the sky. The sun was out, but the sky seemed just a tad colorless. There were a couple of clouds that looked dark. “I hope it doesn’t rain soon.” She mut...
Weekly Contest #168
“What am I supposed to do for the next five hours?” The agent at the ticket counter gave Callie an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, train delays are rare but they do happen. You’re welcome to take a seat somewhere until your train is ready to board.” Callie sighed in defeat and grabbed the handle of her wheeled suitcase. “Alright, thank you.” She wandered around the train station for a bit until she came upon an empty bench that was away from the crowds of rushing people. Sitting down, she leaned her head back against the wall and closed her...
The full moon glowed brilliantly in the night sky. As Amelia gazed at it from the window, she couldn’t help but groan. Of course the moon looked beautiful. Of course it was a beautiful night. Of course there wasn’t a single gloomy cloud in the sky or any lighting bolts ready to strike down below. Of course such a beautiful night was going to lead to an even more beautiful day tomorrow. Tomorrow would surely be a beautiful day for a wedding. She felt bad that she was having these thoughts. Only a truly selfish and despicable person would w...
Weekly Contest #162
Trigger Warning: Mentions of death and kidnapping On a cold October morning, a car sped up the driveway of 3235 Merryway Lane. It came to a screeching halt and a young woman leapt out and hurried towards the front door of the modest house. Adeline pushed open the door, knowing that it wouldn’t be locked, and called out in a loud voice as she stepped into the foyer. “Mama? Are you alright?” “I’m in here, darling.” A familiar voice called back. Adeline followed her mother’s voice to the living room and was surprised to find her mother sitti...

“You’ll never know until you try.” Reggie sighed as he watched his friend, Danny, pace back and forth like a maniac. “Dude, just make a decision already. Are you gonna do it or not?” His voice snapped Danny out of his trance. “It’s not that simple! I can’t just decide: yes or no and be done with it. That’s just impulsive, and I’m not an impulsive person.” “Cleary.” Reggie muttered under his breath. Danny chose to ignore it and continued to ramble on. “You just don’t get how important this decision is to me. Its literally gonna change my l...

There was no worse place on Earth to be than a candy shop on Valentine’s Day. Dozens of customers flocked through the doors of Sweets ‘N Treats all through the day as they frantically purchased last minute chocolate and candies for their loved ones. It was the most profitable day of the year for the store, so every Valentine’s Day the shop remained open until midnight. Ella had been one of the unlucky souls who had been scheduled to work the 4pm to 12 am shift. After around 8 pm, foot traffic into the shop dwindled significantly and by 10 p...
Weekly Contest #132
Are you there, God? Its me, the girl who was stupid enough to spill an entire iced macchiato on herself right before her job interview. Amber stared at the empty cup that lay in front of her. One moment she had been struggling to get the lid off some she could add in a few packets of splenda, and the next the lid had blown off and the coffee inside drenched itself all over her. She was sitting at a table in the middle of a café and had just publicly embarrassed herself in front of all the morning-goers who had come in for coffee and tea. F...
Weekly Contest #131
Mara was having the absolute worst night of her life. Prom was supposed to be the highlight of her high school experience. It was supposed to be the night that she would look back on when she was old and gray and feeling nostalgic about her teenage years. Instead it had become a night that she wanted to forget. After coming back from the bathroom she had spotted her boyfriend, James, locking lips with a sophomore girl in the middle of the dance floor. What had followed could only be described as the most public and humiliating break up that...

Caitlin Hampton was already having a bad day. She had woken up late that morning after her alarm failed to go off, and in her morning rush she had ended up spilling an entire cup of iced coffee all over herself. Of course she hadn’t had time to shower so her best solution was to simply throw on the last dirty shirt that she had managed to fish out of the hamper of the clothes she had meant to wash last night. Now she was cold and sticky, and dealing with the absolute last person she wanted to see. Of all the diners in the city, Asher Hale j...
Weekly Contest #129
“This is a nightmare.” Victoria felt a heavy weight in her chest as the realization of her current prediction slammed into her like a bag of bricks. She remained motionless on the top step of the stairs, looking down at the man who was standing near the front door of the chalet. Adam, her sister’s fiancé, gave a sigh and shoved his phone back into his pocket. “Looks like it's just us here tonight.” He said, as he glanced up at her, seemingly unaware of the horror that was written all over her face. “There was a ton of snowfall this morning...
