Weekly Contest #376
Opening Long ago in an old Geronimo Stilton book, eight-year-old me read about the doomed opera of a mouse who was obsessed with cheese but couldn’t eat it on the account of being deathly allergic. Even back then, something about it struck as poetic to me, and although I cannot recall which book I read it from (I’ve read far too many) or even the title of the opera, I find myself compelled to expand the idea. A Doomed Cheesy Romance All her life, Isabella Região was praised as the most beloved mouse of all of Italy. Flourishing as a model...
Weekly Contest #375
Below is a translated excerpt taken from the files of Lundernius Scouting Academy, an alien school on a planet estimated 40,000 light years away: Disciplinary Report regarding an Earth escapade: Educator’s note: This report regards the disgraceful behavior of three cadets as well as an instructor from Lundernius Scouting Academy. We take full accountability for endangering the safety of Lundernius and are deeply apologetic. We also plead with the District to understand that these children are an outlier from our standard environment. As fo...
Weekly Contest #374
Mrs. Sullivan casts a final, regretful glance at me, but it’s more for her own conscience than my well-being. She could’ve fought for me, and deep down we both know she chose not to. I’m even angrier knowing I was so close to escaping the foster care system, but thanks to her refusal to even defend my character, I’m stuck in another cruel institution for five more years. The National Development Program of Affluent Minds, bedecked in shining medals of nationally ranked excellency and home to multiple prosperous businessmen. So much sumptuou...
Weekly Contest #373
Greg The slam of a garage door signals the return of Greg’s daughter. Greg himself is sitting in a bright, orange swiveling chair, watching videos on how to solve a Rubik's cube. He contemplates going downstairs and asking about her day, but he can’t bring himself to talk to her. He sinks further in his chair and gives the colorful toy another turn. The sun descends down the sky as he listens to his daughter living her own life. Even while confined to the same house, their lives remain frustratingly adjacent and never intersect. Finding co...
Weekly Contest #372
Emma jolts awake, feeling sticky sweat coat her body. It's an uncanny feeling to be awake at 2 am- hallways in her house seem unnaturally dark and her body continues to perspire even as she shivers from the cold. A small breeze blows against her bare calves from the sliver of her unopened window. She always keeps her window a crack open since she gets hot easily and almost never freezes. A soft rap from her window scares her. She becomes uncomfortably aware that only she is awake, and she feels scarily alone. Adjusting her pajama top, she p...
Weekly Contest #371
Steam rises from the bowl as Mrs. Chang opens the microwave door. It billows into the cold, night air and floats into the empty school hallways. The corridors which are normally bright yellow and filled with loud, obnoxious teens now seem dull green under the bright moonlight. The moon’s glow bathes everything in an unusual light, and she’s reminded of how she can’t be here. It’s well past midnight, and she jumps every time a faraway door creaks. She’s been using this lounge for about a week now and is baffled at all the new things she’s no...
Weekly Contest #369
Small droplets of rain splatter against the dull pavement, disrupting the suffocating autumn air. Fortunately or unfortunately for me, my shirt has been damp since the moment I sat in that suffocating courtroom. Mundane days as paralegal will seriously be the end of me, especially since I only applied to appease my parents. Now, I’m stuck with the consequences of my impulsive decisions- instead of shining in the successful social life I’ve built, my weary legs numbly shuffle forward, accomplishing nothing but wearing down the soles of my sho...
