Weekly Contest #371
Rain smashed against the windscreen as Rose tried her best to stay focused on the road. Inside the car, a song from the ‘80s played, one her dad would always have on repeat when she was young. Around her, the wind howled and trees bent from the raging storm outside. She sighed, switching on the wipers, but they did little to clear her view. Strangely enough, the atmosphere felt quite fitting. She was not happy, and it seemed the universe agreed. Just ahead, a faint sign came into view, lit up by a small spotlight on the floor. The Evergreen ...
Weekly Contest #368
Ding! The door slid open as a customer entered. Ivy didn’t bother to look up; instead, she continued to read through her crinkled magazine, lazily flicking through the pages. It wasn’t until the man approached the desk that she finally gave him her attention. Cigarettes. She turned to grab the pack from behind her before he even opened his mouth. “Damn, how’d you know?” he asked. She shrugged. “Lucky guess.” The man handed her a handful of change before walking outside. She watched as he flicked open a lighter, holding it up to his mouth. Sm...
Weekly Contest #367
“Are you nervous? Do you need a drink?” Around me, everyone was rushing back and forth. Everything had to be perfect. I took a breath before looking towards my sister. “No, not right now.” I smiled. I sat still as Claire, the make-up artist, applied my blush. I glanced at the mirror and saw a glimpse of myself. Wow. This was really happening. “Okay, but let me know if you need anything; I’m here for you,” Kira said. She was always so supportive of me, even if we didn’t see eye to eye. She wandered back to the adjacent room, probably to get i...
Weekly Contest #366
Every evening at exactly seven-fifteen, my neighbour stood at his window and watched me. I noticed him for the first time on a Tuesday. I had been washing a mug at the kitchen sink when I felt that peculiar sensation of being watched. When I looked up, I saw him standing in the upstairs window of the house opposite mine. He was incredibly still, a tall man, perhaps in his fifties, wearing a pale buttoned shirt. His face was difficult to make out through the glass, but I knew he was staring straight at me. What a creep. I lowered my head and ...
Weekly Contest #365
“Hey, did you hear what he did?” The whispers were strong and sharp. Yet Arthur ignored them, focused on the task at hand. One by one, he stapled posters to the walls, telephone poles, sticking them in the windows of any shop that would let him. It had been five days since he’d seen his darling daughter. Since he’d stood on the porch with the light on, waiting for her to come home. Amelia wasn’t like other kids. She was quiet and cautious. She cared so much, so deeply, for everyone around her but was sometimes too scared to show it. She was ...
Weekly Contest #364
“It was April 6th, 1989, when I killed Rebecca Walsh.” The tape clicked as it began to record. The room was cold, filled with the steady hum of the fluorescent light above. Detective Inspector Kingsley didn’t look up from his notebook. “Would you like to start with your name?” he said. “For the recording.” The elderly man let out a tired sigh, leaning back in his chair. “Carl Edwin Russell.” Kingsley nodded before gesturing with his hand. “Go on, Mr Russell.” Carl stared at the now cold tea between his hands. “It’s been twenty years. I felt ...
Weekly Contest #363
June 4th I woke up just before dawn to silence. The buoy had stopped ringing. It’s funny, the things you grow accustomed to. Fifty-three years in Brinehaven and I don’t suppose I'd ever truly heard that old bell until it wasn’t there. Every morning, every night, if the waves were rolling, the bell was tolling. But this morning was different. I heard no bell. And, for that matter, no waves either. I thought perhaps the storm had whisked the buoy away, or maybe it had deafened me to any sound at all. It had raged most of the night, harder than...
Weekly Contest #362
Once the beef has browned, add 1 1/2 tbsp of flour and stir well. Judy stirred the pot with delicate care. The smell of searing beef permeated the air. Once the flour had been mixed with the oil and fat to form a roux, she moved on to the next step. Then, add 2 tbsp of tomato puree. She squeezed it, straight from the tube to the pot. Years of cooking had given her an innate ability to measure things by eye. She didn’t even need to get her cookbook out to follow the recipe, but she still did. The drops of stock that had dripped onto the...
Weekly Contest #361
I was nine when the first child disappeared in the summer of 1984. By the time I was twelve, seven more had followed. At the time, I hadn't thought much. Townsfolk skirted around the topic, never really believing they were gone. Somehow, the belief that they might one day just turn up never really left. Parents would pin black-and-white posters to the noticeboard outside the post office. Search parties would comb the woods and ditches for a few days. Then life would continue. The posters would fall, faded beneath the sun. The search would st...
Weekly Contest #360
“Please!” he shouted. “Please!” Static hissed through the speaker above him. “I can fix this,” he begged. “I just need more time. I can fix this!” A familiar voice crackled over the intercom. “You’re out of time.” Nathan rubbed at his eyes, yawning as he skimmed the clipboard: pump vibration, corrosion, humidity, another pressure warning. In other words, the exact same results he sees every morning. He knew he should care, but the monotony of endless, identical days had worn him down. Rising from the break room chair, he scrawled his signa...

Weekly Contest #358
“You’re going to be late!” Bailey shouted, running down the stairs. On the side was a brown leather briefcase, which she promptly shoved into her brother's hands. “I know, I know.” Ollie took the briefcase, chugging down the last of his coffee before wiping his mouth. “How do I look?” Bailey sat on the sofa and watched as he spun around, showing off his suit, which had once belonged to their dad. The trousers were hemmed, and the sleeves were a little long. But looking at his nervous grin, she couldn't help the warm feeling that filled her. ...
Weekly Contest #357
The rabbit burst from the undergrowth in a spray of snow. The fox followed. The forest raced past in flashes of grey trunks and white earth. The rabbit darted beneath fallen branches, twisting through gaps too narrow for anything larger. The fox leapt over the logs and tore through brambles, his paws drumming against the frozen ground. The rabbit’s breath came in frantic clouds. One wrong step, one move mistaken, and she would be done. The fox lowered his head and pushed harder. Hunger gnawed at him. His stomach ached, an emptiness that seem...
