Weekly Contest #337
Her alarm goes off every morning at 7:00 even though she is not the one who sets it. Same time, every day. She stretches and makes her way to the door, yawning as she opens it to expectantly find a large box on her porch. She carries it inside to the kitchen, like she always does. She carefully lifts out five small cartons. Three are ready-made meals and two are extra snacks for the days she feels extra hungry. She doesn’t feel much at all, not anymore. She stacks all but one in the refrigerator and continues with her morning routine. When s...

Based on a True StoryIstanbul, Turkey. 2009.Elle yawned as she stirred a cup of instant Nescafé in the kitchenette of her outdated but nonetheless furnished apartment. She had spent less than a week in this exotic city, and the teacher company that had recruited her had just moved her into yet another apartment. It was closer to where she would be working and also in the heart of the city, so she didn’t complain about the sudden move. Jet-lagged and hungry, the doe-eyed 22 year old decided it was time to go explore Istanbul, a city where the...

Nobody knows who I am or what I do. I’m a useless piece of junk. Emily’s the only one who ever loved me. These are the thoughts that whir through me rather than tapes.I spend my days sitting on the shelf of this smelly pawn shop, hoping someone will give me a second chance, but no, why would they need me, if they don’t even have a VCR?I wasn’t useless once. Not on Sundays. Because of the Fridays. Oh, Fridays. Pizza, game night, movie night, babysitters or family, you name it. I’ll always owe Blockbuster for that. Screw yo...
Weekly Contest #275
Your head already felt like a suitcase that was overflowing and couldn’t be zipped. You didn’t need one more thing to stuff in there. But that had to be his footsteps, it just had to be.“B, is that you? What do you want?” you shout upstairs. Why was he here? HOW was he here? Was he in his first room, trying to find something, his crooked glasses he would constantly tape together, or that misplaced document that Emre had been looking for? You didn’t even know if you believed in ghosts. You were taught all your life that halloween is bad, ghos...

Iris glanced around the room as she pulled on the nitrile gloves. Grabbing the side of the book drop with one hand, she reached in deep with the other, groaning trying to get further inside. Sam walked over cautiously, head cocked to the side.“Iris,” Sam said, with their hands folded politely in front of them. “How can I help you this morning?”Iris slowly retrieved her arm and stood upright, adjusting her stance, blowing a wisp of hair out of the way.“I accidentally returned a book with something important inside,” Iris explained matter of f...

Weekly Contest #253
When Amy opened the door to the apartment Kara was still there. She was sitting on the couch with her arms folded and Continuum was playing in the background. “Hey, what are you doing here, what happened to your date?” Amy questioned as she closed her flip phone, coming in from babysitting.Kara threw her head back exasperated and huffed, “Good question.”Amy dropped her Coach purse to the floor and strode over to her roommate. The second she sat down, Kara leaned on her. She sniffled a little, but Amy was sure it was allergies; Kara nev...
