Weekly Contest #153
It was a glorious day, the temperature was perfect, and I was sitting outside at a little café enjoying an iced coffee and a muffin. Sitting beside me was my bff (aka sister) and we were planning our parents 50th anniversary party. We already had the venue, the food, and the music and now we were working on the guest list. Of course, we had to invite the relatives, and my parent’s closest friends, but we also included co-workers and some of our friends too. My sister worked on her list, and I on mine and then we traded to make sure we didn’t...
Weekly Contest #152
It was a gorgeous day outside, and I was enjoying a wonderful lunch with my best friend in the entire world. We had known each other all our lives, considering she was my sister. However, there was no one else I would rather spend an afternoon with. Here lately it was a rare occurrence because I worked all the time, and she had three kids and a husband who commanded her attention. I worked for a big cosmetics firm, and traveled a lot for my job. Which brought us to our current conversation. She had the usual concerns, such as when was I goin...
Weekly Contest #150
Sarah was rushing around getting everything ready for game night with her friends. Every Saturday night, the gang got together and played a game. Usually it was a card game, but tonight she had a new game in mind, it would just take all her skills to convince them to play. The gang consisted of herself, Beth, Pattie, Brad, Jay and Mike. They had lived on the same block since elementary school, and had gotten close. They considered themselves a nerd gang, because they all were in the math club, and loved all things new, dark, and potentially ...
Weekly Contest #148
Finally got the last box unpacked in my new apartment. I had mixed feelings, on one hand I was very excited to be out on my own. On the other hand, I was terrified to be out on my own. I would start college on Monday, so I was very lucky to get everything situated before that day. My parents thought it would be better for my grades if I had my own space, and not have the noise level in a dorm. They both graduated from college, so I guess they knew. It also helped that they paid for this place for a year, and gave me a credit card to buy food...
Weekly Contest #147
I finally got the okay from my mom to start dating, I was sixteen and all my friends started when they were my age, and I did not want to be the freak. I had a crush on this blonde-haired slice of greatness since freshman year. He was tall, and did I mention gorgeous! Well, I was standing by my locker yesterday putting on cherry lip gloss and he was standing by his locker combing his wavy blonde hair when our worlds collided. I mean, literally. He and I closed our lockers at the same time and crashed into each other. He said, “I’m sorry”, an...
Weekly Contest #145
I woke up late, which is odd for me because even on weekends my body wouldn't let me sleep past seven. I suppose it was because of school. I got in this weird habit of wanting to be there on time. So, anyway I dragged my behind out of bed at ten and headed for the shower. I was still feeling groggy which is also different for me. I headed for my bathroom and turned on the light, and what the heck! I was dressed in a princess dress! I scrambled my brain for answers and couldn't find any. The last thing I remember was leaving work and going t...
Weekly Contest #144
My wedding was in weeks, we hired all the people we would need to ensue a beautiful day. The day of my dreams. Except for one minor detail. We quickly realized that having the wedding of your dreams cost money. Lots of money. And we only had $300 to hire a photographer. I was heartbroken! I was sitting at the kitchen table with my mom going over things and she said, “I’m sorry honey, we saved but emergencies kept popping up”. I did not want her to feel bad, so I reassured her that I would figure something out. But it turned out that it was m...
Weekly Contest #143
I'm kind of a suburb kind of girl so when my sister invited me to spend a week with her at her NC house in the woods in the country, I was hesitant. Don't get me wrong, I love my sister and I love going to parks but I'm not used to woods all around me. But I decided to go and brave it out. Her house and surrounding area is beautiful, trees on every feet of land, and tall. It seemed as if some were fifty feet tall or more. I've never personally measured a tree, so don't use me as an accurate indicator. Standing on her deck I could see birds a...
Weekly Contest #141
My Aunt Barbara (aka Bobo) always wanted to have her own small cafe where she imagined would be crowded every day with locals enjoying their day with good food and friends. For years she hosted Sunday dinner and everyone always said the food was so good she needed her own restaurant. She beamed at those words, and literally took them to heart. The thing you should know about our family was this. They were liars, all of them. They wouldn't agree with that statement because they didn't consider it lying. They told themselves that they were ma...
Weekly Contest #140
Every summer starting when I was little until I was 16 our family visited my grandma Maggie. She was a stout woman who always wore a homemade bonnet. She always made one for my sister and I too...we were thrilled. She raised 8 children in rural Alabama on a coal miners pay. Added to that was a man who loved to visit the local watering hole after work. She had every reason to stay stressed, but despite all her hardships she kept an amazing sense of humor and fun. When I was around twelve I was shelling peas outside on the front porch with h...
