Weekly Contest #375
I drove up the long winding road, in which turned out to be the coldest day of the year. The trees were bare and foreboding. There was one very tall tree that had about 30 blackbirds attempting to warn me of something ominous. But, I had to go. My favorite aunt had fallen and broke her hip, she needed my help. So, I packed my bag and headed to Gingerhaven. That's what they had called their huge, falling apart estate since 1865, when the first matriarch had red hair. It had changed hands many times, a few people had passed on there. My Aunt M...
Weekly Contest #315
My baby girl turns 13 today! Hard to believe she's actually going into her teenage years. I still recall mine; feeling unsure, awkward and confused. I want to protect her from anything unpleasant, but it will be impossible. For her birthday this year, she wants to have an overnight trip with her three closest friends. So I booked a cabin at a dude ranch, rented a six passenger van, and we leave tonight. I'm good friends with one of the moms, so we've been working out all the details. We check in at three, unpack and go on a trail ride at fou...
Weekly Contest #285
In 1999 who knew the world would be in such a panic? Especially nearing closer to 2000. With the new year encroaching upon us, people were terrified the computer systems would glitch because they stored data using the last two digits of the year. My mama heard this, along with the world, and started preparing. Here is a snippet of a conversation with her. "You better get ready! We will have no water, power, planes will fall out of the sky, we won't be able to get our money out of banks! It will be total panic. You can store some stuff in the...
Weekly Contest #280
Doctor Jones, I’m very happy you agreed to see me. I’m going crazy. It’s not a problem, I had an opening. Have you been feeling anxious again? Tell me what’s going on. Its not me this time, it’s my daughter, Bella. She believes she’s not human. She identifies with a cat. A cat! She crawls around on all fours, purring and meowing. She wants to eat her food on a matt in a bowl. If she’s not happy, she hisses. Her dad thinks she needs a mental institution. When he said that in front of her, she hissed at him and scratched him, believe me, he ...
Weekly Contest #279
Picture this, the year is 2024 and it really has been a rough year but not even in my wildest dreams could I imagine the events that were yet to come. I arrived at home from my job as a computer analyst and was greeted by my loving family, just another ordinary day. The same things occur every night. Dinner, television and bedtime. It's what happens next that put me into a tailspin. Upon rising from a good night's sleep, it seems like the universe decided to play a sick joke on me. GONE, my entire family is gone!! What in the world is happen...
Weekly Contest #273
I grew up in a small town in NE Alabama and I was one of eight children. Our house wasn't big and it was isolated from the rest of the world. There were four boys and four girls. Thomas was the oldest and he worked in the coal mine with Daddy. Samantha was eighteen and she got a scholarship to Auburn University and was doing well in college. Brad was sixteen and in high school he was athletic and was on the football team. I am thirteen, and in 7th grade and doing fair in school. Daddy tells me that I am his special child and that I can do be...
Weekly Contest #269
I just started kindergarten this year and I love it. I live with my mom had dad in a three bedroom two bath house. I attend Forest City Elementary school and I really love it. Mom and Dad both work at the hospital so after school I ride the bus to my Grandma Irene's house. Grandma Irene is so much fun to be with. She has a special music box that plays the song " Someday my love " and when she opens it, we go on some magical adventures. We have been to Italy and seen the Leaning tower of Pisa, to Hawaii and seen a hula dance and to Australia ...
Weekly Contest #268
I love the color periwinkle blue; it always reminded me of my grandma, who loved anything of that color. She had flowers in her garden, knick-knacks, clothes, etc. I lost her four years ago, but one thing I will always cherish was her periwinkle blue antique vase, which she told me was a special vase that grants wishes. I tested her once when I was six, wanting a special doll. When I didn’t immediately get it, I told her the vase didn’t work. The look on her face still haunts me, it’s like I wrecked her dreams. I never told her anything like...
Weekly Contest #264
It was a cool, crisp beginning of a Fall Day. The air smelled fresh and new, and the orange and yellow leaves were being pushed out of the trees by an autumn breeze. It was Saturday, and I was looking for something to do. I was out on the balcony of my condo when my cell phone rang. I ran in, almost tripping over my ottoman trying to answer it. “Hello”, I answered. A woman spoke “Hi, this is Martha over at Happy Farms nursing home. I’m calling about your great grandma, Joan. I tried calling your mom but she wasn’t responding.” I replied “Oh,...
Weekly Contest #209
My ad agency had only 8 employees, plus our fearless leader, and owner; Miya. She was laid back and cool, however, she was a micro manager. The company had been in business less than six months, but we've had some lucrative clientele. For the most part, I got along with everyone on the team, with the exception of one. His name was Josh, and he was a know-it-all. One time I was working on an ad campaign, and he walked up behind me, started reading what I wrote, and said "that will never work", and walked away. No constructive input, nothing a...
Weekly Contest #197
Destiny Saved Me As I walked down the street, towards the bakery, I heard an explosion. Then I heard screaming, and sirens. I thought maybe I could help in a small way, so I started back to the noise. And I was horrified by what I saw! Not twenty feet from the bus station I was at this morning, there was the bus I was going to be on, to go to my mom’s house. Until free will and destiny stepped in, and told me to go to the bakery first. My mom loved their apple scones, so I thought I’ll go get her some, and take a later bus. Now the bus I wa...
Weekly Contest #188
The universe has it out for me. How do I know? Well, I had a rough year last year. I lost my mom to cancer, which was the worst. And I didn’t think things could get any worse, but they did. I lost my job due to a miscommunication, which was my boss (whom was a wicked, mean, little woman) thinking I said something bad about her. Which, I kind of did, but I said it to my good friend, who also worked for the company. So, I also lost a good friend. On the way to a job interview my car broke down, and it cost me not only the new job, but a big ch...
Weekly Contest #162
The peaches needed to be ripe and full of sweetness. I was making Grilled peaches with amaretto for dessert. My baby had been away for a job for two weeks, and Lord, I missed her. My plan was to pick her up from the airport, bring her home, open the wine, serve her a scrumptious meal, and spend the rest of the night working it off in the best way possible. I took my glass jar with the amaretto and set it on the counter. My favorite thing to do is to cook, and my second favorite was to watch people enjoy the food I cook. It’s like my love la...
Weekly Contest #155
I hate when you’re almost asleep, your phone is plugged up away from your body, and then it rings. You think to yourself, do I really want to turn over, after I just got comfortable, to answer my phone at 11 o’clock at night. It’s probably a wrong number. But then you think, maybe it’s a friend who needs you, or your mom. By the time you think all these thoughts you’re wide awake, and you turn over to answer, and they hang up. It’s utterly frustrating!! So, I look at my caller ID, and it was my mom. Oh no, she never calls this late at night....
Weekly Contest #154
Trying to furnish a house after getting married was a pain! And my new husband was No help at all! He just said go with whatever you want, I don’t care. I Don’t Care!! What?! What if I wanted to decorate the house in all cat merchandise, knowing that he didn’t like cats? Men! I called my friend, Tami for a shopping and lunch date. She could help me sort my thoughts. We met later that day; we had just finished our lunch when I picked her brain. She did know a lot about me, considering we had been best friends for 10 years. “Okay, why are you ...
