Right Before Your Eyes

Jennie was still tired from her night out. She rubbed her eyes, jumped out of bed, and slowly walked into the bathroom to shower. She had gone to a fraternity party with her girlfriends the night before, met a cute guy named Gavin, who she ended up flirting with and necking in an upstairs bedroom, drank a little too much wine and then passed out. She awoke about 2 AM and then headed home by herself. When she looked in the mirror, her eyes still blurry from her restless sleep, she saw two bite marks on her neck. “Oh, no!” she exclaimed, “Gavi...

Monsters Under the Bed

Johnny just turned five. In his own mind, he now was a “big boy” reinforced every single day when his father came home from work, grabbed him under each arm, lifted him up high up into the air and with a big flashy grin on his face asked Johnny the question, “how is my big boy today?” Johnny thought he was fine today. He was fine yesterday, the day before that and probably would be fine in the coming days. He did not tell this condition to his father, who just happily looked up at Johnny flailing at the end of his dad’s arms where his head a...

Last Cup of Tea

Kathy awoke around 6:30 AM, eager to get up and start her first day on a new job. It was a normal day, like any other day, but because she was starting a new job in a new town, she was just a little nervous. As she jumped out of her bed, she heard her cat Max meowing loudly and wanting to be let in. To help Max explore his new neighborhood, she had the apartment manager install a cat door in her kitchen. No doubt Max was out all-night skulking about and meeting all the neighbor's cats. Kathy let Max in after he practically had a cow meowing...

Dialed Down

The truth of the matter is, I owe my place in history as an innovative technology because of the ideas and inventions of Alexander Graham Bell. Bell was a Professor of Vocal Physiology at Boston University engaged in training teachers in the art of instructing the deaf how to speak and he experimented with the phonoautograph, which recorded the vibrations of speech. It was a simple device which used a stylus that traced lines on a smoked glass plate, leaving trace lines as a person spoke. This experience gave Bell the idea to work with spoke...

Another Dimension

George pushed the accelerator almost to the floor of his jeep, feeling his tires slipping on the muddy mountain road and the car lurching to the right and left of the road as it slipped. He had not really decided on his own to come visit his cabin at this time of year when it was normally rainy and snowy and the dirt road always a muddy mess, but his boss had commented on his fatigue and lack of focus at work and so he decided to take a couple of weeks off. "What better place to rest, relax and 'rehab'", George thought to himself, than in th...

5:41 AM

About every two years, like clockwork, usually in the Spring, I take a long drive through the desert. I like deserts because they are barren, bleak places with no people around to mess up a perfectly nice day. Just creepy, crawly, and sometimes dangerous desert creatures who, unlike humans, don’t bother you if you don’t bother them. Because my desert adventures were usually about 12 days long covering almost 3100 miles, at the end of a day of driving, I would stay at a motel—usually a cheap motel built in the 1940’s with cool signage and har...

Floating Above

Jamie looked down on the lifeless body laying quietly, and quite dead, in the bed below him. Only inches from the face of the corpse, nose-to-nose, Jamie looked under himself over the full length of his body, from his head to his toes. He realized, in this moment, that he was floating above the corpse, and although it clearly was a dead person, he was not scared. He seemed to be floating in some ethereal cloud, so that when he looked through the cloud at the body below him, it was distorted because the cloud wavered and shimmered like a mira...

Fire is the Devil's Best Friend

Joe Stiller doesn’t remember exactly when he started hating women. The hatred probably began in his childhood when he was six years old living in a small desert town with his parents and four sisters. Of the five kids, just like in a litter of newborn puppies, Joe was the runt and so his sisters picked on him constantly, at home, on the playground and even at school in front of his friends. One time, they all held him down on the ground while his sister Sue painted his toenails bright red with fingernail polish. The twins, Pat and Pam, laugh...

Seven Inches from the Sun

Jon traveled in his car down Highway 10 somewhere between Phoenix, Arizona and Palm Springs, California in the absolute middle of nowhere. His family had lived in a little mining town called Midland, named for the Midland Mining Company, about 22 miles due north of the small town of Blythe, California and, on this trip, Jon planned to visit the home he lived in when he was five-years-old. Midland was smack in the middle of the Mojave Desert which, in the dead of the summer, could reach temperatures of 124 degrees. As Jon drove, the temperat...
