Weekly Contest #372
The small farmhouse sat far from the road, surrounded by a tall grove of trees that stretched high into the dark, cloudy sky. A variety of maples and oaks, their branches shifted and swayed in the breeze. A storm was quickly rolling in but from the inside the house the lone occupant couldn’t tell. He couldn’t smell the scent of rain that was carried on the wind. As it brushed across the open field that stretched between the house and the old, cracked road. The only thing that he could smell was the sawdust that coated floors and the old mild...
Weekly Contest #313
I awoke with a tremor running throughout my body, coldness had seeped its way into every limb of my body. The kind of cold that seized every muscle and caused my body to curl into itself seeking any bit of warmth. When my body shifted my head whirled crashing me back down onto the rough concrete I was laying upon. I felt the sticky puddle that had formed around my body, soaking my skin and clothes. I tried to blink against the darkness that surrounded me, blinking against the nothingness that smothered me. I lifted my stiff arm to my head fi...
Weekly Contest #301
“It’s not that complicated, kid. Just run in grab the bag and run out.” He said this so matter of fact in his gruff voice. His wrinkled face relaxed into an expression of careless annoyance as he attempted to downplay the risk of the plan. “Okay… then why don’t you do it?” I meant it to sound more biting, yet the quivering fear took the hostility out of the tone. My eyes were scanning the motionless huddles that lay on the other side of the dust covered window. I barely registered his deep rattling sigh, the damage from years of smoking ciga...
Weekly Contest #272
“Did you hear that?” Her whisper cut through the silence like a cold knife. I shook my head despite her unable to see me… We couldn’t see anything through the heavy darkness. Once surrounded by the constant buzz of electricity, the city now sat still… silent. I peaked out the windows over the helpless city. A chill swept over my skin as I stared out at the vastness. Skyscrapers that once shone like a beacon were now shadows against the stars in the sky. I tried to focus my eyes on the street below but the moonlight would not reach there. Tha...
Weekly Contest #271
The earlier days of the apocalypse was only chaos. Death and smoke gripped the air, I could feel it stale all around me. It coated my skin, my clothes, my hair. Fear pulsed through every vein. Terror gripped every muscle. Dread gnawed every brain. It was melted into the eyes of everyone you passed. When would it happen to me? When will I watch it happen to someone I love? What could we have done differently? Thoughts that would plague my mind over and over, my new reality. The dead no longer stayed dead and those bitten became deranged, unre...
Weekly Contest #238
I stared out the window as we turned onto the main road of our small, boring town. Above, the clouds stretched across the sky as a dark gray blanket. It casted a gloomy haze over the decrepit buildings passing by in a blur outside the window. Before getting into the car I noted the that the air smelled heavy of un-shed rain. I heard my mom mutter under her breath, “I’ve never seen town this empty before.” Her eyebrows pulling together in confused concern. “Maybe it’s because of the storm?” I asked unsure looking forward to the empty street a...
Weekly Contest #213
Bel, short for Jezebel, was an introverted only child who preferred her own company to a crowds. As an adult she fell deeply in love with nature and you could often find her on a forest trail, hiking in her free hours. Today was no different, she blissfully hummed to herself over the singing birds and crunching leaves beneath her feet. She had walked this trail many times, so she was familiar and well conditioned for the winding trails up the mountain slope. Her friends would often ask her if her solo trips were ever frightening and she wou...
Weekly Contest #210
When we first arrived to our campsite it was well past midday. The sun hung bright above our head, hot and blistering. The evergreens stretched tall into the cloudless sky around us. It was the perfect day for our fourth annual boys trip. Nate, Richard, and Julian have been by my side through every awkward stage of my childhood, all the way up to my early adult years. Although after the situation last year when Richards wife caught him doing lines in the strip clubs bathroom, we were lucky to have him with us at all. So this year we decided ...
Weekly Contest #207
Sometimes it is hard to realize when you are experiencing a life changing moment. But when I walked into the interview that day, I somehow knew my life would never be the same. It had been an agonizing two weeks of waiting for the editors to select a journalist. The assignment being an exclusive interview with Dr. Howard, world renowned experimental epidemiologist. This interview was easily one of the biggest breakthrough stories of the decade. Almost guaranteeing a spot in every respectable scientific magazines throughout the country. So wh...
Weekly Contest #206
When she first began her slow walk home she was in a wonderful mood. It was her favorite time of day, just before the sun set for the day. It was breathtaking watching the golden light of the setting sun paint the countryside. She loved how it seemed to make the grass and leaves glow. Loved to watch the warm light flitting through the trees. So despite leaving her friends house later than she meant to, she found her self in no rush. As she walked she listened to the croaking frogs and the chirping of the birds. Beneath her feet she heard t...
