Weekly Contest #376
When he awoke, it was not to salvation, but to the stench of rot. Rain slicked the stones of the capital, washing the blood of the dead into the gutters. The moon hung pale above, a single white eye staring down without pity. He had prayed for God’s hand, for warmth, for mercy, but only numbness answered. It cradled him now, hollow and cold, as he wandered the streets of a city that had forgotten the living. The spires of the great cathedral jutted through the mist, their bells silent, their doors chained shut. Once, he had knelt beneath tho...
Weekly Contest #375
Each afternoon, I wake and count what's left of me. Ash beneath my nails. Wax hardened across my palms. The smell of smoke clinging to my flesh like a second skin. No amount of lye or prayer can remove it. I am stained, tainted, cursed. I scrub anyway, trying to brush the ash onto my apron; the soot leaves dark streaks across the fabric, then I wash my hands until my skin burns. I eat. I sleep, and at sunset, I begin. The old church sits at the edge of the cliffs, half swallowed by fog. Its ancient wood has been soaked with sea salt for s...
Weekly Contest #274
The man with many faces stood before the decrepit shrine holding a bag of human bones, a rotting corpse of a fawn, and a branch from the oldest tree. He had come to summon a demon that had been told of in legend. A child's tale to most, but to the scribes of Lytharius, they were all but fact. He had walked the 1,000 steps and through the harsh tundra only to see a grey stone door crumbling beneath the Imber Mountain. The lanterns that pushed up from the dead ground still burned and danced on the frozen soil. The man knew a demon was here, a...
Weekly Contest #273
The mind can be a dark and twisted place where shadows can take on a life of their own. I was being followed by death, and death showed itself as shadows. On this particular night, those shadows stretched longer, slipping into cracks and crevices of bark and earth like a cockroach scuttling for refuge. Among the encroaching gloom and obscure shapes was a man waiting and watching, and though I couldn’t see him from the heavy dusk, I knew his eyes were glued to me, glued to my house. He had been following me for some time, and I knew he was ...
Weekly Contest #272
I don't remember how I died, but I remember the gnawing cold. A cold deeper than my bones that cut right into my soul. I was no longer myself when I awoke. I was only a husk of a man, something else entirely. The fire roared in the hearth. It was casting shadows on the wall that danced with a chaotic rhythm. No matter how intense the flame grew, I couldn’t shake off the intensity that took over my body. My blood turned to ice, but my hunger grew like that flame, and just like the fire, it was all-consuming. I had tried to hunt, but that was...
