Andy Bridge

Andy Bridge – Designer

I love flaky painted wood, rusty metal, old signs, my family and friends, nature, surfing and my 1954 VW Beetle.

Overview

I am an illustrator with more than 20 years experience, working in book cover illustration and design, editorial and advertising. I graduated with a degree in Illustration from Brighton Polytechnic before moving to London, working from Great Western Studios in Westbourne Park. In 2004 I moved to France with my family where I now live and work.

I often work using a combination of stencils, hand printing and brushwork and I paint with household emulsion paint. I like to use textures of wood and metal as backgrounds and sometimes incorporate 3D elements in my designs. I also enjoy working with type and often incorporate words and lettering into the design, in both flat and 3D.

I have worked with most of the larger publishing houses in my time including PenguinRandomHouse (UK and US), Harper Collins (UK and US), Macmillan (UK), Houghton Mifflin (US), Faber and Faber (UK), Harper Collins (UK and US), Time Warner (UK), Bloomsbury, Atlantic Books, Canongate, Gallimard Press (France), Arnoldo Editore (Italy), Espasa (Spain), Flammarion (France), Hetland (Denmark), Presenca (Portugal), Sartorio Editore (Italy), Weidenfeld & Nicholson, Zahar (Brazil), and more. I am also happy to work on projects, both large and small, for individual clients. My aim is to deliver exactly what the customer wants and to enjoy the experience along the way.

I have illustrated the covers of books by authors ranging from Arnold Bennett, Jean-Paul Sartre and Truman Capote to Muriel Spark, Louis de Bernieres and Hilary Mantel and also some celebrity authors such as Michael Palin, Melvin Bragg and Sandi Toksvig.

I asked Andy to come way out on a limb with me, and he did it without hesitation. He was professional, patient and responsive. He was open to suggestions but, when necessary, gently pushed me in a better direction. The end result is a wonderfully unique and quirky cover that makes me very, very happy. It's my own little work of art that I will treasure always. And, I shall return.

It was fun working with Julie. We took an unusual direction with the cover artwork and I think it paid off with a strong and uncompromising image. Julie was open to a different approach and she gui...

Working with Andy has been an absolute pleasure. Andy took the words of my written description and turned it into a beautiful bookcover which accurately depicted exactly what I had envisioned. All our correspondence had the feeling of conversing with a long-time friend, rather than someone halfway around the world whom I had never met. Bottom line - would I recommend Andy's services to others ...

Andy's a star. Even when I kept changing the brief and pushing back the deadline he didn't flinch. Top of the range. I'll be using Andy again and I recommend you use him too.

Both our approaches to work on this project were very similar, and so I found working with Adrian was really easy. I would definitely be very happy to work with him again on any future projects.

I found Andy on Reedsy, and I'm so glad I did. His work is absolutely beautiful - the most beautiful book cover art I've ever seen. He is very easy to work with through the creative development process, and very collaborative - I found it fun and really inspiring to send ideas back and forth, enabling us to come up with an idea that really sang. All in all, an absolute pleasure to work with An...
