Hank Musolf

Hank Musolf – Editor

I have experience editing children's nonfiction and fiction, indexing, fact checking manuscripts, and proofing at Capstone Press.

Overview

Hello! I have worked as an editorial assistant for a children's book publisher. I have a BFA in creative writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. I like all sorts of genres, from slice of life to fantasy to suburban detective gambling and gatcha simulators (if you know what I'm referencing with that last one you're legally required to contact me with your writing).

I spend maybe way too much time analyzing stories in the lit theory way, like studying how pop culture stories use form and format and allusions and stuff. One of my favorite pieces I wrote in college was analyzing the Venture Bros. through the old lit theorists' work. I love using that sort of knowledge to make stories better, so if you so desire I can be that pillar in your story of old stuff that may be boring to look into but can definitely enhance your work.

I also do like regular writing work too. I like writing comedy a lot, and my stories end up being a melting pot of all the genres I like; fantasy, slice of life, romance, comedy. If you have something weird and silly but with a lot of heart I'm your editor/proofer And of course, even if your work doesn't quite sound like anything I've mentioned so far still give me a thought because there isn't enough time to mention all the stories and genres I like here! I mean, maybe there is but maybe I have other things going on?

I've done professional editing work on fiction and nonfiction projects (including a choose your own adventure series! Those are hard! But if you have a choose your own adventure book let me know!) I have primarily worked on children's nonfiction, but have edited children's fiction series as well. I work in Indesign for book layouts so I would be able to do an index as well if you so desire. I have professional experience fact checking, proofreading, and many more of the little steps that a book takes along the way to publication.

I would love to be a fun mentor/editor/assistant/Yoda to your Luke Skywalker/etc. for whatever project you're working on. I love hearing from passionate people trying to make their stories the best they can be. I can pass my industry know how onto you and help give your writing that professional polish, as well as a dash of some weird sparks of motivation from some idea I'll have reading your work.

We are so lucky to have found Hank to edit my 14-year-old son's first book! He was a pleasure to work with and provided the exact service we were looking for in an editor. I really appreciate his quick responses and insight to helping us navigate our first book! He went above and beyond with my additional questions, and we hope to work with him again in the future! We highly recommend him!

Hank is the best fact-checker I've ever worked with. He is incredibly knowledgeable, very thorough, and very helpful. He has a keen eye for detail, and he is always able to identify errors in my manuscripts. For example, in my last project, Hank caught a few mistakes in my manuscript that I would have never found on my own. He also helped me to clarify a few of my facts, which made my manuscri...

Hank was fantastic for my book. Besides helping with the book, thoroughly explaining the needed proofreading work, and his opinions on the story, he made my first experience with Reedsy a very positive one. I will be using him again for my next book, Killing Crows, which I am writing now.
