Overview

I'm a book editor who started my publishing career of more than a decade at HarperCollins Publishers, working on memoir, narrative nonfiction, literary fiction, women’s fiction, historical fiction, and mystery/suspense. I'm especially interested in Asian American issues and love to work with writers from diverse backgrounds. As the second-generation daughter of immigrants from China, I feel that more immigrant stories need to be told.

I'm also the author of the novels The Art of Confidence (Kensington Books, 2016), Across a Green Ocean (Kensington Books, 2015), and Happy Family (Grove Atlantic, 2008). Happy Family was named one of the top 10 debut novels of the year by Booklist and awarded an honorable mention from the Association of Asian American Studies. I've received fellowships from the MacDowell Colony and the Corporation of Yaddo for my writing.

A passion for education has led me to teach English in China and classes at the Asian American Writers Workshop in New York City. I've also mentored NYC high school students with the nonprofit Girls Write Now, and tutored under-resourced students in Los Angeles with 826LA. I live in Queens, NYC, where I enjoy exploring the variety of food and cultural experiences the borough has to offer.

Pauline Benninga
I had an exceptional experience working with Wendy. She understood what I was trying to do with the manuscripts and offered exactly what I needed in terms of thoughtful feedback, as well as clear, actionable suggestions for moving forward. I highly recommend Wendy as an editor and as a person--she is very professional and positive, with excellent communication sklls.

I am very grateful I had a chance to work with Wendy. For a long time, I had been so unsure of how to pitch my novel because it addressed a complex topic rarely written about in fiction. Wendy distilled the essence of the story and guided me on improving my query letter. She was able to identify published authors who follow the same literary tradition I am trying to emulate. Of course, her inte...

I'm so grateful for the tremendous level of care Wendy put into the developmental edit of my novel. First, she took the time to understand my vision for the book and my expectations for the edit, which I deeply appreciated. It was clear from the start that Wendy understood my project and my voice as a writer. Her editorial assessment helped me to look at the structure of my story from a broader...

I am a published author with five published books and have been represented by a literary agent. After my agent left the agency this past spring, I knew I would need a rock solid, well-polished manuscript to be competitive when venturing back into the query trenches, so I came to Reedsy. This is my first experience using Reedsy, and the professional quality of Wendy’s editorial feedback and tho...
